    I have ZERO desire to get off of my Twin Cam bikes. I don't want an M8. My 96 EFI is smooth and reliable. My wife enjoys it. My SE117 Stage IV is a blast to ride.

    Most of the Harley-Davidson mechanics I speak to have nothing but compliments about the 103. In fact, the majority prefer the twin cam 103 over the Milwaukee 8. I have a 2015 RG special with a 103 and every mechanic tells me I have one of the best engines Harley Davidson ever made!

    Yep, you just helped me reconfirm what I've been thinking about. I'm going to hold on to my 103 HO for a bit longer. Those M8 models are nice, but I personally can't justify paying these crazy prices and then have to start all over again with buying aftermarket parts.

    It is if TH-cam knew I have been thinking about this and bam this content appeared. I ride a metric but rented a 108 Deluxe for a day and plan to rent a touring HD later this summer. It would be fiscally irresponsible to purchase newer 108 HD with 4 kids in College but I am turning 50 and the metric 2 up with the wife won't cut it much longer. This content tells me the less expensive 103 HO and maybe even the 96 on a touring chassis would be a reasonable Harley to own for the garage. Then when I travel I guess I could always rent the 108 if needed. I've watch your content before but this time I will subscribe. Ride Safe.

    I can’t agree more. I’m on a 12 SG. Woods 222, S&S cam plate + oil pump, 2-1 D&D, PV tuner. Runs better than most Milwaukee 8s I run with. I’ve ridden several 114s. The feel of the ride point you made is spot on and why i won’t switch up.

  • @Smokedilla
    @Smokedilla 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Although the M8’s have so much power potential, in my view, the twin cam 103 is pound for pound the most reliable HD out there. I’m talking the Floyd Mayweather motor of HD. I think for guys and gals looking to get into the Harley game, it’s ideal and cost effective. You can pick one up for a reasonable price and make it look nice. You don’t need to do anything to it except a Stage 2 set up. If you want to go further, go for it, but it’s not necessary. Getting an M8 seems more about keeping up with the Jones’s. Who cares! I say ride and be free!

      I enjoyed my 2010 96” Ultra Classic owned from new. A bit gutless at highway overtaking but, most of my miles is on country roads and lanes. Come November 2022 I was knocked of it and it is now toasted.
      I prefer good mileage per gallon than performance off the mark.
      So now looking at the last of the 103” Limited or the first of the 107” M8.
      High torque to me means more tyre wear and those treads ain’t cheap.
      So watching many of these comparison videos.

    I rode both. I bought a used Limited and I do not regret it. I also compared my 17 Dyna with the 103 to a friends 107 Deluxe. Honestly I felt no perceivable difference. If anything the 103 felt more responsive to throttle, and sounded more like a Harley. The 107, and the larger versions, seem to need a lot of upgrades before they start sounding like a Harley. Yes, the Twin Cam sounded different than the Evo motors I was use to, but it still had that Harley sound I always admired. The M8 bikes sound like a Japanese bike to me. I could not care less about the power numbers really. If it doesn't have the sound, then it really does nothing for me. Power is just icing on the cake. All the power and no sound and I wouldn't be happy. Plus they don't vibrate enough... 😅

Harley put on a stage 2 intake, Vance and Hines power duals with Rinehart 4" slip-ons and Harleys Screaming Eagle super tuner pro (the orange one) with a warranty. I heard my bike would be one of the last bikes they could do because of the EPA laws. I talked to the tech about upgrading the cams. His response was, "why". He then told me what a great bike I already had and said if it were his he'd leave it exactly like I had it. So that's what I did. I'm gonna keep this 103 for years to come.

    I installed 57H cams and 107" cylinders and Pistons on my Twin Cam. Compression is 10.25:1. these parts were far cheaper and easier than buying a new $25,000 motorcycle and I am easliy passing New Milwaukee 8 114" all the time. I did all the work myself and so the total cost of the 107" with cams was about $1,200 including machine work, pistons, rings, tuning, bearings, gaskets, seals and oils. I'm sitting at about 110 HP and 123 torque. As far as I can tell the only advantage the M8 has is the heads are amazing right from the factory. The 4 valve heads move a ton of air.

    Great video. I totally agree with the 103. I did cams in my 16 streetbob with a stock 103. Also I added a upgraded high flow oil pump, cam plate, lifters and adjustable pushrods from feuling. I included installing the arlen ness monster sucker air cleaner, bassani 2 into 1 road rage 2, and reflashed the ecu with the power vision. The cams are the woods knight prowler 999-6a. These cams have the .575 in lift and a better duration valve opening over most cams I looked into. When it was all said and done after taking the bike into a dyno shop for a tune the bike puts out 112ft pounds of torque at the rear wheel with 102 hp. I had to upgrade the clutch too because it kept slipping. Ha ha ha.

    If you are a Twin Cam owner and you want to increase its reliability and valve timing...S&S makes a CAM chest kit with Gear Driven 585 CAMS (Item #: 310-0816) and 510 CAMS (Item #: 310-0815). This kit further enhances the already very solid Twin Cam motor to be even better in terms of power and reliability as it eliminates the CAM chain and tensioner. Just remember with more power comes more heat, and you will want a good fan assisted oil cooler ( JAGG makes a great one! ) to improve engine heat management efficiency and reduce power loss when it gets hot...

    I rode my 02 Sportster 1200 Custom for over 3 years. Earlier this year I was ready to upgrade to something bigger for my wife and I to be more comfortable on longer trips on, and for me to get into the bagger world. A trusted friend of mine who has worked at Indy shops on Harley’s for 20+ years told me to save some money upfront and just go with a low mileage 103 HO. I found a 2014 Ultra Limited, completely stock, 9,800 miles on it. I was on a budget in a way and I Had heard so many horror stories about the 1st generation of the M8s, so I decided to go with the Twin Cam 103 HO. I got an aftermarket air intake, Power duals into torquer 450s with a DynoJet PV4 and I cannot believe the sound, feel, and pure acceleration I get from those upgrades. I plan on putting some sort of cam into it but for now, she’s got more than enough power for what type of riding I do, thanks for your videos! Keep up the great content!! Ride safe everyone 🤘🏻

    I interviewed my friends that had Harleys before choosing the 103 bike. The old school shake and thump is part of what makes the experience special. When you consider the expense of the dyno for a stage one set up, it’s really just not that much more to run a bolt in cam and really enjoy the best of what a HD can be. I do not want my Harley Davison to be more refined. Maybe if I had a dresser.

    I have a '14 Road king with the 103 HO and a '17 RGS with a 107. I Like you felt the 107 stock was just lame sounding at idle and due to the cam plate and oil pump issues I decided to up grade those parts and changed cam to a CR480. This fixed the idle and gave me almost a 40% HP gain. I was going to put cams in the 103 but changed my mind. It already has a nice sounding idle and has stage one with a tune and full exhaust with cat deleted head pipe. I really like the way the bike runs, sounds, and feels the way it is so I'm just going to leave it alone. Even though the numbers are lower with the 103 the bike feels just as fast as the M8 even though I'm just as sure the M8 would run away from the 103 if that makes sense? Numbers on a Dyno are one thing but the real life feel and sound are another. Both affect your senses right? Both of these engines have great things to like about them and honestly I cant pick a favorite between them. It's a nice problem to have.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On paper the M8 should blow a 103 away, but out on the road I've found them decently evenly matched depending on the riding situation. One gets out front and the other won't catch it, side by side pulls it can be a shooting match there.
