    Thanks Tom I bought some Bagnall bars a few weeks ago to catch Rays. Finally got to use them last night. Literally the first night I used them I caught a big Thornback Ray target species ✅. I was able to get a nice big cast and the rig made it feel really Natural. 💪🏻 🎣

    I'm still going and I could have honestly watched the Stand by Me, Dirty Dancing and Rambo films in the amount of time it has taken me this evening to watch your videos (once again in chronological order)!
    That said, I think you're ever humble in where the Bagnall Bar came from ... hat's off to you, again, Sir! 💚

    Excellent - thanks Tom. It works really well here in NZ too !! I also find most of my fish hooked on the circle hook, so I add a 4mm bead between the circle hook & J hook to protect the knot. Prefer Tronixpro cascade swivels (stronger) to the breakaway ones, and also find a gemini splashdown is better than an imp when using large baits as I often do here (eg: whole pilchard for Snapper). My biggest problem is finding springs that fit the stainless steel bar (I use 1.3mm diameter) - so instead I use a 20mm length of 2mm diameter silicon tubing - it does the same job as the spring. Finally, I make a version where the bar is replaced by 100lbs Mono so I can use a SRT spring - but the principle is the same and it casts just as well. Will be in the UK in August :-)

  • @kf8575
    @kf8575 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Use a similar sort of thing myself, just tied from 80lb mono rather than a metal rod. Gemini SRT springs fit over it with a powergum stopknot, to tension between the cascade and the hook that way👍

    • @christchurchanglingcentre5428
      @christchurchanglingcentre5428  ปีที่แล้ว

      These started life as mono "bars" 10 years or so ago, then I experimented with the metal bar and never looked back. The mono bars are of course easier for most of us to tie.

    Another gem👍
    Unique!
    This “Rig” is purely a casting rig, it’s all about being able to cast at distance, especially extreme distance. Your bit is to decide which rig/snood you attache to attract your desired species .
    Other rigs that’s it .
    This one , it’s up to you how you develop it.
    It is very clever and It’s probably not correct to call it a rig 😳… it’s more than that
    A casting device??

    Hi Tom, I've just started to use a Bagnall Bar and this was a great video, but I was wondering what the other swivel was for at the top of the bar and why do you use a cascade swivel.

    Thinking about storage Tom. Would you suggest storing the short snoods on winders, then attaching the long trace and bar when setting up?

    • @christchurchanglingcentre5428
      @christchurchanglingcentre5428  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've tried a few things over the years, clip on snoods etc, but to be honest, I just have a selection of complete bars ready to go now. I never like to have to tie a knot when fishing.

    What do you think, just putting this out there, about a slightly longer bar, say perhaps 30cm, for the Dongle rig lovers? Maybe a longer one would lose it's rigidity therefore rendering it unhelpful? I was playing around with the standard bar and just wondered.

    • @christchurchanglingcentre5428
      @christchurchanglingcentre5428  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I prefer to keep them short, maximise aerodynamics and casting potential. Having said that, I'm sure a couple of extra inches probably wouldn't make a massive difference. Worth a try. I do use dongles on the standard length bar though.

    • @thesweetcornkid266
      @thesweetcornkid266 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@christchurchanglingcentre5428 Gotcha, thought that might be the case. I'll experiment with shorter dongles and smaller circle hooks. Thanks for the reply Tom.

  • @revenger1
    @revenger1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Tom can you explain the main advantage of the Bagnall bar over a Portsmouth loop rig ?
    On face value the both present the bait close behind the lead but the Portsmouth loop also keeps the slack hook length more streamlined so you would imagine it would be more aerodynamic.

    • @christchurchanglingcentre5428
      @christchurchanglingcentre5428  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi mate. Quite simple really. The Portsmouth Loop is a 2 hook rig, the bar is a single, thus will cast further. The principle is the shorter the rig the further it'll cast. When I was growing up the "big hitters" used to use a tiny little pulley rig, just a few inches long. This thing cast like a bullet, but only offered a very short snood with the hook right on the lead. The bar gives you the same casting potential as this, but with a longer snood away from the lead.
      Hope that makes sense.

    • @revenger1
      @revenger1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes it does make sense Tom.
      So a single up and over rig may give the same benefit .
      Back in the day those big hitters ... "crack off Colin" 😂

    • @christchurchanglingcentre5428
      @christchurchanglingcentre5428  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Again, the bar will out cast an up and over, unless you tie that very short too, in which case you'll still have a short snood.

    • @revenger1
      @revenger1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Perfect ! ... I've followed your guide and have made a couple up to give them a try.

    • @christchurchanglingcentre5428
      @christchurchanglingcentre5428  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You'd be better off having a small clip on the end of the whole snood where it attaches to the bar, rather than at the cascade swivel.

  • @rickphillips5098
    @rickphillips5098 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love your videos, but please when you say what line your using can you say it in pounds as well .and are all your hook lengths made from fluorocarbon to keep it ridged or do you use mono as hook length say in slack tides as it could let the bait move about more ? I thought about braid as hooklenght with pop up bead in neap tides as it possibly would have more movement in very little tide ! Many thanks rick

    • @christchurchanglingcentre5428
      @christchurchanglingcentre5428  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No. Lol!
      You should never buy line based on breaking strain, only ever diameter. Breaking strains mean very little and are mostly made up, whereas diameters are fact and have meaning. Let's use the line I'm using in this video as an example, the 0.50 maxima chameleon (which is a mono not a fluoro). Maxima call their 0.50 25lb, now if I'd said 25lb in the video someone might go out and buy something like Tubertini Gorilla for example which, if my memory serves me, has a diameter of around 0.30! Now 0.30 is nowhere near good enough for fishing for rays, hounds etc and will lead to lost fish and disappointment! Quite simply 0.30 has nowhere near the strength, abrasion resistance, durability etc of 0.50, regardless of what the company writes on the package. Always always buy your line based on diameter not breaking strain, it is the only constant. I hope this makes sense mate. So endeth the lesson 😄😉
      P.s. I'm quite passionate about this subject because this country has been so poorly served by the tackle industry for so long. We only buy lines on b/s because that's what we're taught, it's frustrating to see so many people given the wrong information.
