  • My son Jordan just got home from a six month deployment as a navy Corpsman attached to a Marine Unit and he has been wanting to build an overland vehicle of his own to join me on my adventures. In this video we introduce his new (used) 2015 Toyota Tacoma TRD off-road, we show you all the features, some of the things that need to be fixed and talk about what his plan is with the build such as wheel and tires, lift kit, rear bed cap, interior, bumpers and winch and more. #sandstonecanyon #toyotatacoma #overlandtruck

Thank you for your service guys! I work in fleet for lacounty fire, and we have Tacoma for our lifeguard rigs. The mudflaps removed themselves on most of the trucks soon after hitting the sand! As for the seats, they make really nice gor tex material seat covers that just slip on and fit nice. They keep the seats clean, and add just a bit more cushion. Look forward to following the build!

  • @jaked5144

Recommendation for storage as someone with the same gen. I put in a Front Runner footwell water tank, and then took out the bottom cushions of the back seat and used those mounting brackets for a sheet of plywood for a dog platform. The water tank is able to support the weight, and it centrally locates the water, which weights 85 lbs. Best part is I can easily swap the cushions back in and in 5 minutes I can take 4 passengers again.

Great job on the new pickup and I’m glad to see Jordan back on the channel. I think y’all should take a look at the Moonlander from Radica. I actually have one on order for my Frontier. It’s a truck cap or topper/camper that actually allows you to sleep width wise over the bed rails which helps with 5’ truck beds.

Solid and glad you all have finally entered into the Toyota trail space. Congrats and fairwinds🙌🏾. I would strongly recommend Dirt King Hiem jointed UCA/ Lower control arm(increases caster with a quick weld of each side of the cam tab seams). And a front locker. And a set of King’s 2.5 F/R shocks and take your leaf pack to Vector Springs in SD for a rebuild with exact height spec/and load. Small unknown shop with unparalleled quality leaf packs customization for a third of what a set of Deavers would be😉. And Toyotas break in at 200k😂😂

  • @bradenb
    @bradenb ปีที่แล้ว +2

My tips (from my 2020 Tacoma DCSB build) for saving weight: a Gazelle T3X fits perfectly end-to-end in the back of the bed with just one or two inches to spare; a soft topper won't give you a support structure for holding items like traction boards or fuel, but it's super light (you can also buy racks that can fit over them which gives you cover and a rack for less than the weight of an aluminum topper); aluminum skid plates are a must, at least for the oil pan; can't avoid steel sliders and they'll be over 200lbs so removing those rear seats is a great idea; a 13 gallon wheel well water tank from somewhere like Ironman 4x4 first perfectly in the bed and it keeps the water weight fairly low and centralized.

Just make sure that your aluminum bumper can handle winching. A lot "support" a winch, but they are limited in their ability to pull. For example, when I asked CBI about this they said they recommend only straight pulls with aluminum. If it were me, I would get a bumper like the Backwoods Adventure aluminum bumper that uses a steel winch cradle. Have fun with the build!

My granddaughter confiscated my somewhat built 2003 Tacoma TRD for her first vehicle. Consequently I found a 2015 TRD and have started my build. My use has always been for fishing, hunting and camping trips. The 5’ bed doesn’t work as a bed, so I installed a Super Pacific X1. Bilstein 6112 front with heavier springs and 5160s rear with Deaver heavier springs Still rides nice even with 235-85r16 E skinny Faulken tires. Heftyfabrication aluminum front bumper with Warn Zeon winch and steel sliders. RCI aluminum full skid plates.

Super solid platform to build as an overlander. If you're used to jeeps, moving to an IFS vehicle is eye opening. I've had 2 vehicles with that 4.0 + 5 speed combo. They aren't quick, they don't get good gas mileage, but they are one of the most reliable gas engines ever built. Has to be awesome as a dad to see your son grow both in his 'real' career and in the hobby you both share!

I think this is awesome. I, personally, own a 2015 TRD Pro as well as a 2021 JTDR. I love that you guys are bringing on a Tacoma into the channel.
To compare my two trucks against themselves would be disingenuous. They are two completely different truck, in soo many ways.
I look forward to this new content.

Kings or Icons are an excellent combo with Tacos, the Icon stage 3 on my 3rd gen was the best riding setup I've been in so far. I don't know with the 2nd gen, but you'll want to research the gear ratios for doing 33s if you ever want to see your top tranny gears. 3rd gens at least came from the factory under-geared with the stock 31s. Another one, Toyota doesn't do any sound insulation for the cab, if you remove your rear seats you'll want to add sound insulation behind the rear panel to reduce road/engine noise. It's surprisingly noisy with the seat backs down.
Some leathers can be nice for offroading/outdoors, but checkout Wet Okale covers. Fully custom neoprene. Not cheap but they fit with airbags, can be heated, have pockets, and never shift around.

Awesome. This will be a great series. So glad you got the last "good" tacoma with the 4.0L engine. Loved seeing the obstacle in Sandstone Canyon - we drove through there a couple weeks ago. When we came to it, there were not any of those rocks stacked, so rigs were high centering on the boulder. My full size Ram barely made it through!

Definitely cranberry sauce. Kids these days... can't wait to see what you guys do to the tacoma. I was thinking about getting one before I got my Gladiator.

Congrats on the new rig Jordan! To me, 4x4 is 4x4! I don't play the Jeep vs. Toyota thing. I look forward to watching your build. My family thanks your family for your service!

Might be your best video yet!
Your son is very cool. His ideas are mature and on point.
Everyone whines about Tacomas being uncomfortable for tall people. Yet at 6'4" he's comfortable. And he's right because at 6'10" I'm comfortable!
2 1/2 inch lift and 33s is perfect.
I just did all the Colorado passes including Black Bear and many in Utah including the White Rim. Zero issues.
Even the idea of not putting the duel battery under the hood is on point. Put it in the back.
I'm going to enjoy watching this progression.

Oh man I am super excited for this build! I was in the exact same situation. I had a 2005 Jeep tj rubicon, 1 hour commute one way to work, and lifted 4” on 33s. It’s not impossible, but it’s work getting that little wheelbase Jeep down the interstate.
Ended up with a stock 2022 TRD offroad tacoma with the exact same mindset as this build. Solid, useable, not over the top daily driver/ dual purpose rig.

Way to go Jordan! A wise choice. Have fun upgrading your already very capable Tacoma. The 2015 is one of the best years Toyota made.
Thanks Brad for your wonderful content. Most enjoyable!

I like the game plan for the build. I’ve got a 2014 TRD OR with 2.5 fox, camburg upper control arms, 33in Toyo AT. Recently did back-way to crown king and the truck does any off-road trail I want with ease and still maintains comfortable highway drivability. 🌮 for the win!

Being the owner of a new 2022 4runner I'm excited for Toyota content as I would like to do close to the same mods with a mild lift and larger tires and a front bumper with the winch.👍

2.5 to 3" lift, upper control arms, body mount chop, 33's, and you'll be good to go. Just make sure you figure out your weights before committing to springs. It'll save you buying them more than once. Smart move going aluminum where you can. The Tacoma doesn't like being overloaded.
There are gobs of secondary battery options for the Tacoma (under-hood battery boxes, power management options, you name it). Take some time to figure out what's right for you. Tacoma's have almost as many bolt on options as a Jeep, some good, some garbage.
