  • Exploring offroad areas in Texas has always made for lasting memories, but this time while at the Merus Adventure Park in the Palo Duro Canyon, I spent 3 days and 2 nights running the new TrailRecon Extreme Challenge Course and encountered a few mechanical issues and had to do a couple vehicle recoveries that almost ended our overland trip. Wheeling our Jeep Wrangler, exploring some exciting trails, finding some epic camping sites and enjoying good food around a campfire all made for an adventure I'll never forget!
TrailRecon Summit: This event has ended, keep an eye out for our for our next one.

I love seeing a sport out there tackling some difficult terrain. Not everyone can afford a rubicon but we can still go out and have fun, really cool to see! Going out to big bear this weekend to get some fresh air with my wife and our pup, thanks for inspiring people to get out

I've got a Sport and I'm slowly building it. Currently has a 2" lift, Rubicon rock rails and 35s. Will soon(ish) be regearing, adding a front locker, and some high clearance fenders. Then when these 35s wear out I'll be putting on some 37" BFG KO2s (I'm gonna do that tire specifically because the BFGs run small and it is still just a Sport). Just gotta wait and get some funds (basically, just wait for the wife to ok spending the money).

I’ve done a ton of wheeling with the sport and it’s been great. It ended up being the rear Detroit locker. The sport will be back on the trails real soon!

My wife just okay’d a small lift and some recovery essentials. Luckily I work at a dealership and they let me keep things from cars that we send to auction. I was able to snag a warn winch and a MOPAR steel bumper from a gladiator trade in.

I've got a sport with a lift and 35's. Comparing these trails to the ones I do out east I'd say there's some disparity between the rating system. The black in the video would be an easy blue out near me.

There’s not a whole lot of public land here in Texas, but there are several really awesome off-road parks that have trails of every variety. I moved from the Nevada/Arizona region to central TX back in 2014 and it was an adjustment getting used to not having as an abundance of public trails but am totally grateful for the places that it does have. And adventure can still be had when going to these unique places and making the most of what’s here.

I agree 100%. The story aspect is a game changer. It adds so much to the final video but adds so much to the videoing and editing process as well. I first learned about “telling a story” from Clay of X Overland at the last expo in Flagstaff. My favorite part of this video was at the beginning when you included different shots of the cables after talking about their history. I’ve been fascinated about the history of logging recently and came across cables in my latest video as well.

A preventive maintenance for the locker issue is potting the sensors. The rear is notorious for diff fluid getting inside the sensor killing them. Potting the sensor will ensure the sensor stays dry. I’ve done it to mine, super easy and cost maybe 40$ in material. Potting is cheaper than the zautomotive harness and will keep the locker functioning just like factory and will last. Thanks for the great adventures!

Use of the Z Locker harness on aftermarket e-lockers voids the locker warranty. I presume it causes the same issue with OE lockers. There is a voltage drop, which will cause the locker to not fully engage or result in reduced pressure on the locking collar, thereby allowing the engagement teeth to slip. Eventually, it will cause the locker to fail.

This was one of the most epic adventures, the trail really put a beating on both Jeep’s and brought out weaknesses. All part of the fun and learning!

Great adventure. Jeep needs to fix that fuel tank pickup issue stat! Unacceptable. Hope the lockers get worked out quickly as well.

Brad, you why Dirk's jeep broke? You guys talked it up too much. You know Jeeps are made to keep you humbler. Another great video. Going to try and go out there.👍

Awesome as usual! But after this video and several others I've seen I'm glad my Gladiator is an Overland model and not the Rubicon. The price was less to buy and I'll feel more confident with Eaton e-lockers and I need lower gears than 4:10 anyway. Gotta admit, you learn a lot from great videos like the ones you put out.

    Wow, thoroughly enjoyed this video.
That is an awesome place with some magic trails...
I have had 3 XJ Jeep Cherokee's over the years and now hooked on the Wranglers. You make Fantastic video Brad. Interesting how the jeep stalls on the downward steep section, you would think the high pressure fuel rail would keep the fuel to the injectors.... Just love the sound of the 392. Cheers 👍🚙🇦🇺
