  • Well this didn’t go as planned! My son and I spend a few days beginning some of the easy changes to our new 2015 Toyota Tacoma Adventure build (GMRS radio install, removing the mudflaps and side steps, some paint repair and some other maintenance). We’ve got big plans for this truck, but we have to get past this first set of easy projects first.

I was thinking the same thing. This easily could have been edited out. Props to both of you for airing it. If anybody wants to give you a hard time, just think of how many people are too lazy to work on their own vehicles. At least you are out learning and doing. I loved Brad’s reaction too (honest mistake, I’ve never made it…😂). Classic father and son interaction = priceless!

Get your oil filters from the dealer. The factory filters (90915-YZZD3) have an anti drain back valve that many after market filters don’t have. Grease your U joints at every oil change. I’ve been a Gen 2 owner since’18.

Hey buddy, I have owned Toyota trucks since 1978 and I made the EXACT same mistake on my 2011 Tacoma. I felt like a total idiot. But I have to point out that the transmission plug and the oil pan are like 6 inches apart and it SUPER easy to make that mistake. So don't feel bad!
I'll tell you what I did to make sure it never happened again. I put a Fumoto valve on the oil pan. Then I knew exactly which one was the oil pan! :)

Hey y’all I just wanted to quickly mention that the Tacoma uses special WS Toyota fluid. It’s probably going to be ok, but if you experience and shuddering or odd transmission patterns, I would definitely recommend getting the proper fluid! Great video, love the transparency!

Ahhh, young Jordan - I got special enjoyment from this video....because I did the same thing just a few months ago during my last oil change! My excuse/distraction: I had been fighting with my skid plates, and after taking a ton of dirt/grime in the face, I was so happy to get them off....I just went after the 1st drain plug I saw! I can totally relate to series of events that led to the figuring it out! My 'rookie mistake' happened on a late Saturday afternoon, so I was stuck until Monday (wanted to use OEM trans fluid and Toyota dealer was already closed.).
I had never done a transmission fluid change on ANYTHING, so I had to hit TH-cam and figure it out. I ended up NOT using a pump, but instead went down thru the bay. It worked out pretty good.
Great timing on the video, because I'm due for my next oil change now, so some good fun and a reminder for me to just slow down a bit!

I really appreciate the pace in which the build is coming along. The lite trail runs, getting to know the truck, to the modifications, it's all coming together in a way that someone in the real world would do. When you see channels completely deck out a truck for overlanding from one day to the next, with expensive mods, it leaves you feeling doomed lol. I know eventually Jordan will get to those expensive mods but the journey getting there is priceless. Thanks for another great video.

Little tip, my oil filter was on top of the engine. I tapped a nail into the oil filter so it could breathe and not dump the entire filter all over the manifold.

@@jordankowitz You bet my friend! Pleasure watching you and your Dad on this channel! Also, consider the Ironman 4x4 Tacoma skid plates for underbody protection, I think they may be one of the most affordable yet strong options out there for bolt on skids right now for our trucks. Sub $500 for the complete set with the right sale or coupon. Plus, their USA storefront is right up here in Oregon and they are a great team.

what great upgrades! And oops on the oil, but seeing the positive side of it, it was preventative maintenance. Can't wait to see more adventures with the Tacoma.

You would be surprised how many taco owners make that same mistake when changing the oil. Good video...

It’s ok and funny. We don’t learn from doing everything the right way every time. Makes the video👍🏻🇺🇸

Exactly why leaving your son to do this on his own is important! Thats a life lesson that will never be forgotten. Awesome video you two! These tacoma videos are very fun to watch!

Try Maguires Hybrid paint coating next time. Ceramic type of protection for under $50. Won't bring back the clear coat but will give UV protection and last much longer than wax.

You could always color sand the paint ( wet sand with 600 or 800 grit sandpaper ).

Nice! I had a 2011 Tundra and the easiest cosmetic thing I did was plastidip the emblems and black out all the chrome. Especially with silver, it’s amazing how such a small detail can completely transform the look of the truck.

As a tip on the radio instals work out the ICNERP regs for power and distances to persons, also try where possible not to mount the antenna in a direct line of sight at glass level to any person within a 3 metre radius of the antenna, as that puts the person withing the magnetic focal area of the antenna's output. Yep, low wattage might not do a lot of harm over short time exposure, but it can over long term, there is no data on it, but better to be safe than be ill in years to come. Also a roof mount will get you further and protect you as it is a ground sheild too.
Re: Rookie error: Did you check the level of the transmission correctly after the refil? As different vehicles have different check criteria, you just don't want to over fill it or under fil it. The ones I work on have to be running and fill to the mark, when hot, not cold. Another version is fill till it runs out, start, select gears and then fill until you get a constant small stream of fluid out of the fill/level plug. It's also well worth replacing the trans filter at this time. :-) ps, I've not sone that before either, but can understand how the error happened, he won't be doing it again, that's for sure...

Hearing Jordan do some of the narration is perfect since it is his truck. Nice "cover" for the transmission fiasco. LOL Everyone of us has pulled a "dummy" mistake. Until next time... Wrench safe.
