Trailer backing tip; Put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel, then whichever way you turn the wheel from the bottom is where the trailer is gonna go.
Especially if you turn as much as you can in the seat, look out the back window and steer with your left hand on the underside of the bottom of the wheel with palm up…
I’m a truck driver with over 20 years experience, and used to train new drivers. If you’re trying to keep the trailer straight behind you use the side mirrors only and turn towards the trailer. Meaning if the trailer is going towards your passenger mirror side, turn towards it (passenger would be 3 o’clock). You have to be fast with a shorter trailer. Also, keep you hand at 12 o’clock and only make quarter turns, meaning from 12 to 3 or 9, then back to 12.
On a short trailer like that if you turn the steering wheel more than a 45 degree angle from the straightforward position, you will be chasing the trailer more.
A confidence builder is to open the rear window and have her look over her shoulder and "follow" the trailer in a big open area. Small steering wheel movements only, aiming for minimal change. Then as above progress to mirrors.
Easy method is hand on the bottom of the wheel so when she goes to send the trailer in the direction she wants the wheel will go that direction. Hand on top is a bit of issue for those beginning to try trailers.
Brad I am going to say since Regina has been joining you I am loving the content even more. Seeing your wife join you and be so involved makes me smile. A good old friend thought me how back trailer. While learning he had me turn in the seat and watch the trailer not the steering wheel. Learn the hand motion of what to do while watching the trailer and not the wheel. That will help you unlearn left and right when once he hand motion is learned use the mirror while keeping the hand motion. But Regina you were still doing great!! Moving backwards and turning backwards is hard to grasp.
Thank you so much for the kind words and advice! As I was watching this video before it was posted, I told Brad that watching what the trailer was doing as I was trying to back up was actually helpful. I'll keep practicing and I'm sure one day I'll get it!

Best trick i learnd for backing up a trailer : Hold the steeringwheel on 6 a clock, when you turn the trailer go the same direction as the hand/steeringwheel.

Love seeing Regina getting involved so much. The one big difference between her technique in backing up and yours is that she is relying on her mirrors to watch the trailer as opposed to looking backward over her shoulders. I think looking directly back gives a better perspective and is more intuitive. Just a thought. Keep up the great work!
When backing up steer towards the problem. If the trailer goes left and you don't want it to go left, turn the wheel left. If it's going right and you don't want it to go right, steer right. Don't over correct. 1/4 turns on the wheel should be a good start for such a short trailer.
Thanks so much Regina and Brad for this awesome video. Regina is so funny and the videos with her are better. I love your Jeep Brad, looks amazing and the sound...what a sound!! Thanks so much for sharing with us.
I agree about the Blackstone. We have a 17” one as well. They can be a little bulky. I see they changed the grease trap to the rear. That should be a design improvement. You guys have probably already figured this out. To be a better teacher, tell Regina to put her hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and then turn/move her hand in the direction she wants the trailer to go.
Trick I learned to backup: grab the steering wheel at the bottom. Now move your hand left to turn the trailer left and right if you want the trailer to turn right. And go slow.
Blackstone griddle, that’s a great idea and a perfect addition to your kitchen Regena. Way to keep on Brad until he got you one : ) Thanks for another epic video and safe travels!
Little trailer small steering wheel inputs, big trailer big steering wheel inputs. Keep practicing you will get it. Nice meeting you all at Overland Expo . Hopefully we will see you out on the trail.
Two different tips about back up. Tip A - Friend gave me this one is to use a toy semi truck and use that a mental note on what the Tractor is doing with the trailer when the tractor is turned side to side. Tip B - Small movements on the steering wheel. The trailer goes wild side to side when the steering wheel is turned too much. Small movements of the steering wheel keeps the trailer under control much better while back up.
I picked up a clutch tip a long time ago for backing up a trailer that made it a lot easier. If you put both hands on the bottom of the steering wheel, palms up and thumbs pointed out, the trailer will move in the direction of your thumbs.
@@regenakowitz Haha I hear you. Even with some decent tips, it still takes some practice to get the hang of it. And the short trailer is probably harder!
Excellent choice in the blackstone , we have had ours for quite a while and love it, it’s very portable for camping and you can cook all three meals on it if needed .
I love my blackstone grills. I have a 17 inch for camping and a 22 inch dual burner I use at the house. My wife only likes her steak on the blackstone now. A quick tip for clean up is to get a silicone handled chain mail scrubber. Works great with water to clean up and remember to treat the surface after each use with olive oil.

I’m 23 years old I’ve been with my wife for about 6 years and I hope once we get older our relationship is like your guys man that’s a beautiful thing blessing from us to you great video 👍 by the way😉
My father and mother taught me how to back trailers starting when I was 14, and if they were around when I was a teenager, they would never stop commenting on my technique. The biggest thing they always said, "make small corrections." Especially with a short tongue to axle trailer, you need to make very small movements in the wheel. The moment you start trying to make big changes you get to a point that the trailer is into an unrecoverable "jack-knife" that you can only fix by pulling far forward. Small corrections!
Your videos just keep getting better and better. My travel trailer, 73 boler, is 13 ft long so I know all about the challenge of backing up something short. Looking forward to seeing your next adventure
My wife got the hang of backing a trailer on a ride on mower and a garden trailer, she didn't know it at the time it was one of the hardest set to learn on be a short trailer the only good point about it was she could see very thing easy. And she gives it to her dad because he cant back😆
congrats on 500k+ subs. easier way to teach backing up trailers ( grab the bottom of the steering from the inside , move to right to back up right and move it left to back up left) top of steering will over correct if not used to it
One simple way to reverse with a trailer, hold your hands at the bottom of the steeringwheel, if you want your trailer to go right, move the steeringwheel right, if you want it to go left, move left, still holding it on the bottom, small movements early instead of big late and off course, go slow.
Sorry if someone already recommended this (didn’t read all 120~ comments) but my Aunt taught my wife to back a trailer. The key for her was putting 1 hand at the bottom of the wheel, then your hand just goes the same direction you want the trailer to move. This takes out the need to think about it, just focus on the trailer. This is how I back up trailers now and it is so much easier. Hope it helps!
trailer backing is by far the #1 thing anyone who is towing should learn. I had the benefit of learning to drive with a trailer hooked up, towed all my dad's equipment for years. I've even done a trailer rodeo where you had to back one through a course and the least about of forward corrections won haha! I didn't win but I was like 3rd place.
Your buddies Marc and Trish Leach have the best tip on how to back up with a trailer. Keep your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel and what ever direction your hand goes, so does the trailer. It will also help you from over compensation as well.
Regena, backing up is difficult for some but one trick that has helped many- put a hand at 6 o’clock on the steering wheel. Keep that hand there and while backing up, if you move that hand left the trailer will go left, move that hand right and the trailer will go right. It simplifies the process and most grasp the concept after 2-3 uses. 👍🏻❤️
Monica and I really like our Blackstone griddle. The only other thing we have is the jetboil to heat water or boil some vegetables. We have the omnia oven also and my favorite are cinnamon rolls for breakfast 👍🏻 we're going to have to try your breakfast biscuits sometime. Thanks for the great idea Regina.
Such an awesome looking trip so far. I screenshot the trail heads And numbers to look them up on a map at some point my wife and I will get out there to check it out. Thank you for the fun videos.
Hey Brad. I saw a video where it was mentioned that when backing up a trailer it is easier if you grab the steering wheel on the bottom and just turn in the direction you want to go. It’s supposed to be better than grabbing the top of the steering wheel. Hope that helps Regina.
Hello, and amazing videos! After my father passed away last week, I've been watching a lot of your videos. I think I finally want a jeep and small camper to get away for a few days . Keep up the great content, I've been learning a lot from your channel ❤️✌️
Your video quality is really coming through n my new computer. Great picture and great adventures. I think the outside kitchen is a great feature and probably why your wife likes taking the jeep and trailer compared to the Power wagon and camper.

So the trick that worked for my wife when I was teaching her to back the trailer, super simple but it clicked… hand at the bottom of the wheel, move your hand left and the trailer will go left. Move your hand right and trailer will go right. Hope it helps!
Trailer backing tip;
Put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel, then whichever way you turn the wheel from the bottom is where the trailer is gonna go.
Yep, she tried that several times. Slowly but surly starting to get the hang of it now.
That “hand at bottom NOT top” makes all the difference for me. Hope it helps others too.
What helped me learn was thinking about it like I was pushing a wheelbarrow, but with the trailer hitch
Especially if you turn as much as you can in the seat, look out the back window and steer with your left hand on the underside of the bottom of the wheel with palm up…
that works, also if you see more of the trailer in whichever mirror turn wheel to that mirror to straighten the trailer.
Steer toward trouble, that's how you back a trailer... An experienceed driver told me that and it changed everything for me.

This was my first trip with it but I'm loving it so far!
Your videos just keep getting better and better. My travel trailer, 73 boler, is 13 ft long so I know all about the challenge of backing up something short. Looking forward to seeing your next adventure
Nice changes to Trail Recon!
The dynamic between you and Regena are definitely relationship goals. You guys seem like a great example of us younger married couples.
My wife got the hang of backing a trailer on a ride on mower and a garden trailer, she didn't know it at the time it was one of the hardest set to learn on be a short trailer the only good point about it was she could see very thing easy. And she gives it to her dad because he cant back😆
Another great video. Thanks for letting us tag along your adventures.
Appreciate you for watching! ☺
I love all the videos you're putting out with your wife, y'all are great together!
Thank you!
@@TrailRecon Semper Fi, Doc!
So happy you made it back to Colorado! I can’t ask for a better place to have grown up!
congrats on 500k+ subs. easier way to teach backing up trailers ( grab the bottom of the steering from the inside , move to right to back up right and move it left to back up left) top of steering will over correct if not used to it
One simple way to reverse with a trailer, hold your hands at the bottom of the steeringwheel, if you want your trailer to go right, move the steeringwheel right, if you want it to go left, move left, still holding it on the bottom, small movements early instead of big late and off course, go slow.
There were times when backing up, I thought my little teardrop hated me too! I really had to correct early with a short coupled trailer. Good job!
I was definitely beginning to think it was personal! 😂
I love the sound of this Jeep!
Luv it. Thnx for sharing. Looking forward to those Bfast Muffins.
YESSS!!!! Finally an ADVENTURE
trailer backing is by far the #1 thing anyone who is towing should learn. I had the benefit of learning to drive with a trailer hooked up, towed all my dad's equipment for years. I've even done a trailer rodeo where you had to back one through a course and the least about of forward corrections won haha! I didn't win but I was like 3rd place.
Totally agree with the other subscribers. Regina’s commentary and presence kicked your content up to 11.
Thank you! I've tried that...it just doesn't seem to work for me. But I'm not giving up! Try, try, and try again...one day I'll get it! ☺
I would rather watch these beautiful adventures instead of some boring movie. Keep up the great work, your videos make me feel like I am out there.
Awesome, thank you!
Awesome hanger. Thanks for the background.
Love the New Video love the fact you and your wife are having so much fun.
Thank you so much!
Good entertainment and a great video; loved the backing; she wouldn’t make a big rig driver.lol.😎😎😎😎👍👍👌👌👌👌🤩🤩🤩
Thank you and no, I don't think either of us are ready for big rig work! LOL!
Definitely not! 😂
I was a Teamster truck driver and that is the way I was taught
Thanks for sharing your adventures. Your videos give me ideas on where to go with my family for camping or short day trip.
You are right! I LOVE the outdoor kitchen in our Patriot Campers trailer. ☺
I just wanna say, this is a GREAT all around video. It's videos like this that make TH-cam special. Medium length videos that tell a story, and share some cool experiences.
Editing quality is spot on, and I just wanted to acknowledge how great a production this is!
Thanks, y'all!
Trailer backing tip, hold your hand at the 6 o'clock position and point the trailer direction you want to go.
Regina sure is Brad's compliment, especially the kitchen detail;
Quick tip when backing. Hold your hand on bottom steering wheel turn your hand and wheel in direction you want the trailer to go. Short movements.
Was great to see your rig, and fun to wave hi as we passed at the happy hour. Quite the crowd!
This is looking like an awesome trip, can't wait for the next instalment, bring it on guys !! That crispy chicken looked yummy!! My wife and I love watching your vids/adventures...👍🚙🇦🇺
Thank you for watching! I should have the chicken nuggets recipe up on the blog, trailrecon.com/blog.asp , soon!
So the trick that worked for my wife when I was teaching her to back the trailer, super simple but it clicked… hand at the bottom of the wheel, move your hand left and the trailer will go left. Move your hand right and trailer will go right. Hope it helps!
Awesome! Im from Hopewell where Lindbergh's home is. We also have a Van Sant Air Port in PA not far from us! Cool history!
I love finding historic places to visit!
Great seeing you getting out and about
