Correction regarding the 120 lbs (60kg) rear storage capacity. The decal referenced the front storage board, not the battery platform. This section is being deleted from the video (TH-cam processing time may take a bit). I own it when I misspeak, thanks to everyone that helped provide the clarification.
Wow, thanks for that clarification. Based on that, I removed LC from consideration. Now it's back on my short list, along with 5th Gen 4Runner and Lexux GX550 . Is it possible to point out the storage board?
That's awesome! I had heard about that and seen other videos reference it as a weight limit for the entire platform. That would be a pretty insane limitation. Glad to hear its not the case, and now an already hard decision becomes even harder :D

Great in depth review, Brad. I think we can all agree that the Land Cruiser is a great looking vehicle, but it's great to have someone experienced like yourself talk about the good and the bad (such as the rear cargo payload limit). As a Gladiator owner, I love seeing other off-road oriented SUV and trucks on the road. Bronco's, ZR2 Colorado's, Raptor Rangers/F150s, Grenadier's and now the Land Cruiser. There are truly a plethora of great offroad vehicles available on the market and I don't blame you one-bit for choosing this over another Jeep. Enjoy the new vehicle and I look forward to seeing the build!
There’s really nothing like a Toyota. I’ve got a 2013 FJ and she’s still like new even with the off road adventures I’ve taken her on. She tows a Casita travel trailer on occasion and has never, ever let me down. I expect my FJ to easily make her 20th birthday. Enjoy your new truck.

Proably the best LC 250 series review ive scene!! Nice to see someone go over one of these who actually does overlanding and wheeling. Quick note @ 22:00 , the locking the center diff is the same as 4hi in other offroaders. The full time 4wd is more like All Wheel Drive until you lock the center, then it's a normal 4HI. From my expereince in my V8 4runner, it's a nice system. It has been in most LC's and some other Yota modles for a good 30 years. A great system for bad weather or heading up into the mountains in the winter, don't have to worry about shifting when you are on the road but if things get really bad and you need some more traction the center is always there. Only downside is fuel economy but if you are putting 35's it's all smiles per gallon anyways 😁
I agree with you that the full-time 4WD is nice. I have the part-time case in my 4Runner, I do like being able to run 2WD, but if my girlfriend was driving it in spotty weather, there would have to be a whole lesson involved in that. I like that with full-time you just get in and go.

Congratulations on the new ride! I chose the GX 550 and I've had a blast building it out. So far I have a Westcott Designs Preload collar lift and that allowed me to put on Toyo Open Country AT III 35x12.5x 17 tires and Method 703 BeadGrip 17x8.5 x +35 offset wheels. Wow crazy, I had a 392 for the last couple years in large part because of your videos. I hadn’t been on TH-cam much over the past few months and picked up my LC yesterday and just saw this video today! Lol, traded the 392 and did great on it, love the LC and how easy it is to drive and comfortable compared to the Jeep. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it!
I’m a little disappointed but as long as you keep doing Jeep videos I’ll keep watching. Lol You do the best overland travel videos on youtube keep up the good work!
We love our LC so far. I bought some Method 17 inch wheels and yes, 17 inch wheels do fit. I am going with 285/75R17 tires which are 33.8 inches diameter. They will fit without lift. With the Westcot preload collar lift kit, you can put 35 inch tires on if you want. I am going with that lift kit as well. There is not anything that I have found available for a winch setup, but several companies say they are working on it. Looking forward to watching your build.
My 22 Defender is basically fully loaded, but a 4 cylinder for $71k. Trading it in for either the Land Cruiser or the 4Runner before the warranty expires.
Great review, Brad. I just picked up my new Land Cruiser two days ago. I ordered it in June and watched each of the updates while being built. Your review simply validated my excitement about why I made this purchase. Thx:)
Congrats on your new acquisition, Brad! I am definitely looking forward to seeing how you set up your communication systems as well as figuring out how to put a 35 inch tire under the rear of the vehicle. Removing the rear seats and setting up a platform so you have an even load floor will be exciting as you say!
Looks pretty good Brad. I'm glad you included some other options. And why you chose the Toyota. I was debating between a Chevy/GMC Suburban/ Yucon XL and a Tahoe/ Yukon. Or something like what you got. Those little turbo motors still scare me a bit. But hopefully longevity is better these days with them. Looking forward to the build of it. Sounds pretty exciting
I have a 1958 Trim, love love love it. So far my only gripes are storage is dismal and stock tires are a joke. Putting a front leveling kit on from Toytec this week and larger AT tires.
Toyota was a good fit for a couple reasons. 1. Toyota reliability. 2. Your viewership will double. I’m a Ford, Toyota and Jeep guy. You’ve nailed two of the 3 most popular and best selling vehicles in America.
When I built my JL I watched your channel. Now I have a beast. Then I bought a '04 GX470 and built that. Then I got a '97 TLC factory triple locked and built that. These sit next to my '14 4runner that is stock. Jeep = wall climber, GX = comfort & overland, LC = truck + overland + good rocks, 4runner = mall. Next year I will go to '25 GX or LC. I don't subscribe to the Toy/Jeep "wars" they do well in their space. ALL of them are amazing vehicles. To hit the Rubicaon, I want to drive there in comfort in my GX but hit the trail in the Jeep. :)
I got 21 Toyota 4Runner TRD ORP and I love it . Did some mods and someday it will be overlanding rig. Can’t wait for your Landcruiser mods and adventures!!!
I was an early adopter of the JT and at first there was limited aftermarket support, but it eventually came around. I traded in the JT for the Power Wagon because I wanted to give full size travel a try.... miss that PW a bit!
Check out the Dissent build. Spent some time with it last week and Ben knocked it out of the park. I watched it walk up (and down) ‘the wall’ on Poughkeepsie Gulch like it was nothing. 38’s are awesome on it.
Nice pick Brad. I been testing out the Land Cruiser but with dealers mark ups I got to wait till things are cooling off. Stay with this one a bit longer as it really would be nice to see a finished product!
@@MrKozanitis Dissent, there was a teal Land Cruiser at overland expo PNW with their bumpers. They are located in California. Edit: it's on 38s as well 🤘
You mentioned you’ve been driving around on sport mode and keeping it there, but you also mentioned that you only get or have only gotten 20 miles per gallon. Curious to know if you drove around on Eco for an entire tank if you’d hit that high mark.
I hate that Toyota in Canada put a lot of extra money on top of the US pricing and I will not support that - so unfortunately I had to delete it from my list
@@bwofficial1776 nonsense Most of the world is metric so if anything it would be more expensive to convert it into non-metric for the US And the EU requires daytime running lights as well so again not a significant cost.
80 and 200 Series owner here. Very excited to see what you do with the new LC. I personally think Jeeps are better for hardcore rock crawling rich dudes who can tow the Jeep to the off road site and back. If I’m overlanding and exploring off-grid, I want the proven reliability of Toyota. That being said, I hope Toyota rights the ship with the new Tundra, and I hope that this new LC proves as reliable as its heritage.
I’m surprised you chose this over the 4Runner. Seems almost exactly like the 4Runner. Actually I think the 4Runner has more capability and is more attractive. I’m not sure why Toyota would even offer these two vehicles at the price point they are currently offered at. I drove both and honestly they drive extremely well. I much prefer the interior of the 4Runner though. I’m also curious if Toyota has addressed the issues that plagued past vehicles when it comes to the electronic controls for the 4 wheel drive and other off-road systems.
You can put more weight, the 120 lb refers to the board, which can be replaced. * The board could break if over 60kg objects are placed on it. * The board could dislocate if a load is applied from above onto the back end of the board. * To remove the board, lift the back end of the board and slowly open the board. If the board is opened or lifted with force, the hooks on the front side of the board could break.
Congratulations, I’m a huge Toyota fan. I’ve had several and they just flat out work. Currently I have a built FJ Cruiser and a3rd gen Taco.I’ll enjoy watching the build 👍
I concur with you on this, it will be a fun build to watch, I am a big Toyota Fan myself going back to a 79 LB 4x4, 82LB 4x4, 88LB 4x4, 06 Tacoma V6 4.0L Xtra cab 6ft bed, currently a 2022 TRD Pro 4Runner running KO'2s and Westin slider side steps.
Brad congrats sounds like this is going to work for you guys, and thats what matters. I liked your statement "Im a car guy". Thats a great comment. Happy Trails
Using Apple car play in wireless mode works well but runs the phone battery down in just a few hours if using navigation apps, so you're gonna be corded anyway. I don't like the front end as much as you, looks too much like an F150. The boxy appearance might get broken up a bit with a winch addition. I think they could have done better there.
Congrats, welcome to the LC tribe. You will love this vehicle. Personally I'm holding off till the "Market Adjustment" goes away and color and option choices open up before selling my 200 model. You will not regret this purchase, only issue is will your bride relinquish it.
Replace with brass. I've replaced so many of those on semi trucks with brass because they just crumble after a few years. Plastic coolant connectors has to be one of the most stupid automotive decision ever
Brad, I know you love Jeeps, for very good reasons. I give you a LOT of credit for being open to getting other vehicles. So many people are unwilling to believe that manufacturers other than their favorite, are capable of putting out good vehicles. There are so many great vehicles these days for overlanding. Good for you! Great video.
I get it jeep like but comfort is needed and the Land Cruiser delivers 🎉party on and make some great memories like you’ve aloud use to witness thanks for sharing in your hard work.keep it pushing
My stock JL Wrangler Rubicon with proper 33” BFG KO2 off road tires, best low range gearing, 4:10 gears, front and rear lockers gets 22 MPGs if driven nicely and maintained properly (fuel system, catch can etc). The cost to properly lift a IFS vehicle is more expensive, add to that the cost of wheel and tires. As far as reliability, on my lifted Tundra build I had about $18k in repairs for steering rack, leaking transfer case, water pump, bed damage, and body damage. I have seen Toyotas on the trail with busted CV joints. The Pentastar 3.6l v6 on the Wrangler has been in over 10 million vehicles. Some may get lifter/rocker issue but that is a $2-3k repair and can be DIY, and the risk can be mitigated by cooling, increases oil change intervals and heavier grade oil - and extended warranties up to 100k mi from Mopar can be purchased relatively cheaply if you search the forums and shop around.
Congratulations Brad! I also looked into the Land Cruiser..... Sold my Wrangler and my LR4 and got a new Defender, will be towing and mainly use it as a daily driver and love the luxurious interior. The price point of the Toyota shocked me a little honestly, I looked into the 1958 and the interior is definitely not a 60K vehicle worthy one! The Mid-trim model you have is more money than my base Defender and that was the 2nd shock I got from the land of the rising sun! I will enjoy seeing you taking on the build on this and tell us about it!
Here's what I like about Toyota: my 2013 4Runner has 180k miles on it, doesn't leak anything, and has no squeaks or rattles. There really is a special quality in these made in Japan vehicles.
Mate you are not going to regret this purchase. I’ve owned a Landcruiser Prado 150 (Model before the 250) And now the 200 series Land Cruiser. Best cars ever made.
Hey Brad😊 I have a 2019 LandCruiser Prado VX here in Aus and I have to admit I love it. Heated and cooling seats etc .9.5 ltrs per/hundred. Just the comfort is something different for me😊 You will love the LandCruiser
He changes vehicles too often to really let us know how reliable they are, probably because he doesn't have enough faith in them to be a long term reliable vehicle. It will be interesting to see how long he keeps this one, going on his past record, not long at all.
Hey Brad.... I'm traveling in Wyoming from Florida. I had a trailer issue at a remote campspot and some folks helped me out. I think they're friends of yours. Jeff and Kathy. They had a unique trailer you may know.
Glad I found your channel Brad. Coming from the UK I'm fed up with most car reviews (here) focussing on EV range and 0-60 comparisons. I love trucks, I love the US obsession with trucks and I'm now obsessed with the US obsessing over its obsession for trucks. I think I was born in the wrong country! Anyway, I really enjoyed your review and the 854 comments below.
Brad, I can confirm that a Falken WP AT4 285/70/18 (34") will fit underneath with no trimming... barely! I chose this tire for its C rating to improve ride quality and mileage stats. Enjoyed your video.
8500klms in my Grenadier, most of that remote touring in Australia, as they say, built on purpose, would definitely have one over a Prado (Landcruiser 250) less electronics than the Toyota etc etc. Time will tell but so far so good and its got what we call Bush-ability. No limp mode if a sensor has a dummy spit.

@@WranglermanLevi well I learned a lot about what I wanted through the Jeep platform. Ultimately came down to on road comfort and driving performance . I also still have a Wrangler 4xE.
I was shocked you said you’d considered a Defender. You were almost sucked in by the aesthetics. I agree with your observations that they’re full of electronics, airbags etc which can and do go wrong, hence the terrible reliability of the JLR brand. A once basic and capable off road icon, sacrificed by TATA for the profit of the high street buyer 🤔 I’m glad Toyota have remained true to the Land Cruiser ethos
I own a 2022 2 door rubicon with 35s etc. Go offroading with a guy that drives a 1985 Landcruiser with 3" OME lift & bumpers, 35" tires. It's a beast! Not sure I could do those upgrades to an $80k new vehicle.

Toyota is not selling an SUV with a cargo capacity of 120 pounds, that's silly. It's referring to the weight limit of that removable panel which only extends about 6 inches back from the rear hatch. There's a little storage space in there. im sure the aftermarket will make tougher panels for the paranoid but i really think its a non issue.
It's crazy that they limit rear cargo to 120 pounds. Batteries in that location messed up cargo in the most recent version of the Sequoia as well otherwise I'd have one.
LOL, Brad I dont think you can troubleshoot an issue on that engine with all that complexity under the hood in the trail. But excited that you will try it long term. Lets see how reliable that engine is.
toyota hybrids are actually simpler tbh! the hybrid system allows them to remove many belts or chains and things like starter and alternator, the water pumps, steering pumps.... are all electric so less things to go down, plus the hvac is super efficient for camping so you dont need to install diesel heater or other stuffs.
It looks amazing, but I’m not sold on the engine. That Toyota reliability is not going too well these days. We will see. The 4Runner 4.0 V6 will be missed.
Brad thats awesome. Congratulations on the new ride. I've been looking at the Grand Highlander, the Sequoia and the Land Cruiser ... What a sharp looking SUV.. can't wait to see how you modify it.
I'm a little late to the party, but I'm really excited that you got this. I think you're the most likely to put it through its paces out of people that have them do far . I'm just starting to see them in person, and I really like them, tho it's obvious Toyota cheaped out here and there, -cough cough- the tires. I also wish they would stop burying the recovery points so far under the front end. I can't wait to see what the aftermarket comes out with for these, and with you being in SoCal, I think you're safe from frame rust.

Lol, traded the 392 and did great on it, love the LC and how easy it is to drive and comfortable compared to the Jeep. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it!
I’m a little disappointed but as long as you keep doing Jeep videos I’ll keep watching. Lol
You do the best overland travel videos on youtube keep up the good work!
Thx:)
I think that "120 Pound Limit" refers to the load that the PLASTIC COVER can take.
3/4 Plywood Sheet can solve that problem.
Great choice! 1100 miles and I’m loving mine so far!
Congratulations on your new purchase! You're going to love that Jeep Commander!
That's a great looking vehicle! I'm looking forward to seeing how it works out for you.
I’ve been a fan of the channel for a long time, and I’m a Toyota fan, so those merging is a great thing. Congrats!!
Hell ya! Welcome to the Toyota community 🤘
I got 21 Toyota 4Runner TRD ORP and I love it . Did some mods and someday it will be overlanding rig. Can’t wait for your Landcruiser mods and adventures!!!
I recall that you ditched your first Gladiator due to lack of early aftermarket parts. Is it going to be the same case for the Land Cruiser?
I thought the same thing.
You finally came over to the dark side…Yota!!!💪🏻
Well I hope it's not that dark!
@@TrailRecon😂
To a Prado--not an actual Landcruiser. . .
Yota will struggle to get you out there, but JEEP will always get you there and home
Yea a toyoda is definitely not a jeep!
Good for you for trying something new, I'll be tuning in to see how things develop. cheers, lefty
Looking forward to watching this build.
Congrats on the new rig Brad! Even though I’ve got and love a JL Rubi I still think this new Landcruiser looks great.
Dissent off-road has an amazing Land Cruiser build with awesome armor 🤙
@KaiMirra, dissent or decent?
@@MrKozanitis Dissent, there was a teal Land Cruiser at overland expo PNW with their bumpers. They are located in California.
Edit: it's on 38s as well 🤘
@@KaiMirra thanks! I was unaware of this.
You mentioned you’ve been driving around on sport mode and keeping it there, but you also mentioned that you only get or have only gotten 20 miles per gallon. Curious to know if you drove around on Eco for an entire tank if you’d hit that high mark.
Awesome video as always Brad. Can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store for your new Land Cruiser.
I hate that Toyota in Canada put a lot of extra money on top of the US pricing and I will not support that - so unfortunately I had to delete it from my list
It costs money to convert everything into metric and put daytime running lights on.
@@bwofficial1776 nonsense
Most of the world is metric so if anything it would be more expensive to convert it into non-metric for the US
And the EU requires daytime running lights as well so again not a significant cost.
Overland Dad always pushing the envelope! Way to go Brad! Congratulations. I’m excited to see journey.
Excited to see Toyota content on your channel!
This is going to be fun for sure.
I, too, am a Jeep and Toyota fan. They are both very useful in the outdoor recreational enthusiasts' world.
Aftermarket will fix this weak board!
You could not pick a better vehicle
You will not regret this purchase, only issue is will your bride relinquish it.
that coolant pipe is shaking, I wonder how long it takes to break the plastic connection.
I had a FJ 40 years ago, that was a land cruiser. That thing you got there’s a station wagon.
I will enjoy seeing you taking on the build on this and tell us about it!
to be fair, a toyota corolla can do those same trails
a horse too ..
I think Brad acknowledged that the trails were non-challenging.
No cooled seats in the corolla.
Here's what I like about Toyota: my 2013 4Runner has 180k miles on it, doesn't leak anything, and has no squeaks or rattles. There really is a special quality in these made in Japan vehicles.
Mate you are not going to regret this purchase. I’ve owned a Landcruiser Prado 150 (Model before the 250)
And now the 200 series Land Cruiser.
Best cars ever made.
Hey Brad😊 I have a 2019 LandCruiser Prado VX here in Aus and I have to admit I love it. Heated and cooling seats etc .9.5 ltrs per/hundred. Just the comfort is something different for me😊
You will love the LandCruiser
I give Brad 6 months tops until he sells it 🤭
I think so, too.
I give him 6 months before he sells all his jeeps! :)

LOL! I know them! They bought our Patriot Camper trailer and they're good people. Small world!
Hopefully it has a better debut than the new Tundra and new Tacoma have received.
At the 7:00 minute mark, the wires going into the transfer case are completely exposed on the underside of the vehicle!
That looks bad
Hey hey that is what we call being overbuilt!
Brad, I can confirm that a Falken WP AT4 285/70/18 (34") will fit underneath with no trimming... barely! I chose this tire for its C rating to improve ride quality and mileage stats. Enjoyed your video.
I like the round headlight version. I don’t like this front end. But living in the northeast. I don’t trust Toyota frames anymore after my experience.
@ 10:45 I love seeing people get a vehicle and tear everything off of it
This is really strange. I bought a 1958 Land Cruiser yesterday after trading in my Jeep gladiator. I come home and see this review from you! 😂 I agree with everything you said. Looking forward to see what accessories you trust on this platform
why the downgrade?
@@WranglermanLevi well I learned a lot about what I wanted through the Jeep platform. Ultimately came down to on road comfort and driving performance . I also still have a Wrangler 4xE.
@@justmattgray The Toyota is going to be a better daily driver. Jeeps offroad emphasis make them a bigger compromise for daily driving.
Yes!!!! Finally a Toyota. 😂
Thank you for keeping your channel really interesting to us.
DMV loves your household. The fees you pay on your fleet must be astronomical.
This is his Business; He Probably gets to write off the cost of his Vehicles. makes me want to start my own Business & TH-cam channel.
all technically a business expense!
you tube paying for it all, good job Brad picking up these extra cows to rate. an there paying for gas, insurance, all the upgrades, space where the stuff is parked,ETC .keep up the good work.
I think we’re all car guys and are interested to see what this LC can do. I respect the thoughtful approach to reviews and mods that you take, looking forward to seeing where this goes for you. Personally, my 5th gen 4R does what I need, and I’m thinking seriously about rhe Ineos. I’ve owned a few Rubicons and a D110, time to try something new.
The 120 pounds weight limit on the back is something Toyota didn't think thru.
You can't even put some dogs back there. Crazy. :)
@@AZdroptopit’s just that narrow section. No dog is going to have that much weight on that narrow strip. Agree it’s stupid though.
Awesome Brad 👌 I really enjoy you planning, excitement, and ideas you put into your vehicles excited to see what you do with this build
It's crazy that they limit rear cargo to 120 pounds. Batteries in that location messed up cargo in the most recent version of the Sequoia as well otherwise I'd have one.
Dude I'm with you!!! I've had mine for 6days and I LOVE it!!!! It's absolutely beautiful.
lol I’m blessed to have a eco diesel gladiator rubicon. Keeping it permanently.
Just got a new 23 rubicon gladiator. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned by far.
finally you have a real offroader!!!looking forward to ur videos!!
Why did you get this over the gx 550?
Great choice. Love the color. This would definitely be up my alley for an SUV. Can't wait to see how this build turns out.
Need to drive one. If it is as good as the previous model it should be a winner. Have fun.
What an exciting "off roader". What's next? A bronco sport? 😅
