THE SECRET OF THE TRAIL ARM | HOW TO SHALLOW THE SHAFT

  • How do you shallow the shaft in the downswing?
Shallowing the shaft in the downswing seems to be the most popular thing to learn to do if you follow online golf instruction. Most notably made "famous" by George Gankas (coach to PGA Tour player, Matt Wolff), he describes his "Gucci" move as the secret to shallowing the shaft. I'd tell you it doesn't quite work like that.
The trail arm plays an enormously important role in the golf swing. It is responsible for the hand path and the shaft pitch through the backswing, transition and downswing. Learning to externally rotate your trail shoulder is a very key move, but very few people discuss this area in any great detail, leaving most amateur golfers to struggle unnecessarily!
Learn how the trail arm should move and how the position of the trail elbow influences the steepness of the shaft throughout the swing. There are two drills included in the video to help you learn the motion of the trail arm and train it to help your ball striking and direction become more consistent.
Give it a try, and let me know how you get on in the comments section.

Rob, I'm a self confessed slow learner, and it's taken me months and months to unlearn years of doing things incorrectly. I'm still very much work in progress, but I wanted to let you know your videos are fir the first time giving me hope. For perhaps the first time I feel comfortable standing on the tee, feeling like I have some idea of what I should be doing, and if it goes wrong, then why.
I particularly enjoyed working on this drill after getting on top of staying centred and even adding the loose belt around the waste and tail arm, to learn the function of eliminating my tendency to let the arm move away from my right side.
These days, playing is filled with hope and some degree certainty that brings much joy. So thank you for your clear and precise information.

Thanks for explanation on the trail elbow. To me, it is the hardest move of the stack and tilt method, and your comparison of the losing an arm wrestling match with the elbow. With this imagery, I understand that I actually have to work to get the position right. If I let it float (relax), it goes behind my body - a move I have been making for 50+ years!

I found this video to be very valuable. I have always positioned my right elbow to the side of my chest. After watching this video I moved my elbow to the front of my chest and kept it there throughout the swing. I was able to hit the ball longer and straighter. Sometimes, in an attempt to gain more distance, the back of my left hand would get bent forward resulting in pulls and hooks. But when I was able to keep the back of the left hand straight with the left arm I had very good results. I plan to continue to work on Rob's tips on the trail arm. Jim Ward, Tampa, Fl

I love the analysis of how the body works in the golf swing and the never ending search for the magic bullet that slays the mishits while keeping the speed we all want. The miracle is the incredible difference in the result of what looks like the same thing from a top pro and a 10 handicapper. The top pros look like ordinary people but I think they are really aliens from another planet.

Phenomenal video. Thank you for the detail. I realized that with my prior conventional golf swing, the right elbow comes off the side quite significantly and I have a hard time returning to in front of my right hip on the downswing. With your teaching and S&T, it stays against my torso and I don’t have to time getting my right elbow back in front of me. This improves my probability of maintaining the flying wedge. You’re exactly right about the lack of right side tilt in the downswing. This leads to the casting/right arm extending off the body just to make contact with the ball. You’re an exceptional instructor.

Great video, have found this helpful recently. A challenge I have found with it though is allowing the connected feeling of the upper right arm to open appropriately on the follow-through. It seems easy when focusing on keeping the elbow against the right side, to swing it right around the body on the follow-through and pull the shot left. Is thinking about straightening the arms at impact out to right field the best solution? Cheers, Pete
