Thank you so much for publishing this video. Over 48 years, there is nothing that has come remotely close to the immediate impact that this tutorial had on my golf striking. Not anything in golf instruction or in life. This is absolutely amazing!!

Great video. I was a "hold it like a baby bird" gripper. Then I heard Brad Faxon give a speech where he said the grip pressure in the hand should be significantly tighter and another pro suggested I hold it at an 8 out of 10 -- all things you are saying. Brad also mentioned the arms and wrist have to be supple and soft. Great to hear you bring all this up and reinforce it. I have had great success implementing much of what you teach.

Best video on the grip that I've seen on YT. Very comprehensive. I never thought much about the grip until last year, but changing my grip really cut down on the slices & fades & I hit the ball a lot straighter. I've always loved the interlocking grip because it just feels right for me. I recall that chipping video where you used a weaker grip I believe, & I'm going to try that when I'm finally able to golf in a couple of weeks.

I converted to S & T about eight months ago and am now from the high 90s to mid 80s even though not been on the course a lot due to the restrictions etc. I have been following Singapore Golf for some time now, this the very best instruction I have ever come across for the golf grip, took it to the course yesterday and and a lot of the shots I hit were push draw, fantastic Rob, keep up the good work *****

I have always used the hold the club with the pressure to hold a baby bird. I am going to increase the pressure to a 7, 8, or 9 to see if that reduces dispersion

Funny you mentioned the fingers gripping a little firm. I experimented the other day with that on my clubs and actually had contact with the ball still. You speaking of this make me want to try this out more. I was holding like I was protecting the bird analogy. The firm fingers worked great on the trail hand when I hinged it at the top of the swing and brought it down on impact to the ball. Thanks again Rob.

That's really interesting comment on modifying your grip to suit different clubs and shots. I've found by trial and error that I need a slightly stronger grip on my driver to hit straight, but that same grip gives me a tendency to pull my irons. Trail hand slightly over the top fixes it. Great to have my own experimentation vindicated by an expert. Thanks for another excellent video.

At the range today. Long story short, I have noticed the importance of these pressure points in the hands and fingers at the top of backswing and indeed thoughout the whole swing. If you lose the points at the top during transition, it is very difficult to control the club face after that. I think this is the most important guide to hitting more controlled and consistent shots, as you always know uncounciously where the face is throughout the swing.
So just to check, where should you feel the pressure points at the end of the backswing and also at the moment of impact. Ty so much.

  • @marcmanion4264

Thanks for this! A few amateur comments! 1 - I like the Golf Machine - way before it’s time. 2 The grip as you describe it also adds an advantage of older golfers or people who play a bit - there is less “stress” on your right riding finger and the nerves do not play up. 3 Having a “hold the bird grip” is easily recognised if you need to adjust it in your backswing!!! 4 Obviously if we are delivering to a target, with speed (not force) a “soft” grip is useless 5 Yes - a proper grip allows me to move the clubface to ensure, on any day, it is square at impact - or a touch open, closed ... Good stuff, thanks

However this vid changed everything for me on grip and this is the game changer for me. I have tried this gripping like 2 outings now and I am thrilled how many fairways I hit. Not perfect yet but I think I am on the right track here... thank you so much for this easy to follow vid.. looking forward to watch more vids. 2 thumbs up

Thanks Rob !! This video was amazing...... I have struggled with controlling my driver club face. My grip is very strong with my driver where my irons especially with 6 to Wedges are less stronger. I am trying to break this bad habit from gripping my driver versus my irons. Maybe I am not comfortable with my grip pressure with longer club hence why I tend to have a much stronger grip. this video provides a great visualize and drill to help improve my grip and grip pressure.

Hi Rob - just 'stumbled" over your You Tube site and have now subscribed and look forward to future tuition from you. This video was most timely as I was going thru a 'wobble" in my game (not unusual over the last 62 years of playing the game) and you may have just given me a quick return to form. Enjoy the no nonsense, factual manner you use and its nice to see someone offering sound advice without the usual claims to make me more like a pro than the amatuer I am. Have been to the practice fairway and was delighted in the changes adopted (mainly in the pressure points in the trail hand) brought me instant return to clean straight shots across the bag. Must admit is feels a bit strange (thumb pad over the lead thumb) but looking forward to 18 holes tomorrow

Love it! First grip video, which fundamentaly explains the grip, puts it into a modern perspective and not only repeats old theories.
Especially the topic grip vs wrist pressure.
Think the main reasons light grip pressure is/was teached, is because it's easier to maintain loose wrists (which is important?) having a loose "toothpaste" "bird" grip.
But having a firm grip while loose wrists feels so much better - you gain both: control & release

I think in order to maintain a strong grip on the club and yet have loose wrists it is important to ensure that the thumb and forefingers of both hands are not gripping the club too tightly. By which I mean they shouldn’t pinch the club. If you pincer your thumb and forefinger together and then try and move your wrist you will observe a serious loss of mobility in your wrists! Thanks for the good advice!

I keep my thumb to the right of the club almost on the side with my right hand. And I strike the ball really well. I hit mid to high 70's but I tried to change to be more neutral the way you showed as this is the way i was shown years ago having lessons.. but I started topping it and over drawing the ball.. so I've gone back to my thumb to the side of the shaft.. I must be doing something else in my swing to stop me from having a neutral grip. Thank you for your video.. great advice. And I feel better about my grip pressure and pressure points... cheers

Grip pressure - Interesting. I think most go with the "grip just enough that the club doesn't leave your hands". I'll give that a try and see how it goes! Nice point about the right heel pad to help keep your left arm straight. I'm a little unsure about the trigger finger though as I don't feel I put pressure against the shaft as you suggest as it more or less just sits there.
Good stuff as usual, Rob! Cheers.

So, I have always been plagued by a fade. When hitting it great, a straight shot or a baby fade. When “off” a significant fade to the occasional slice. As such, I have spent a lot of time on the grip. Differences from what you’ve shown: I had the grip much more in the fingers of my left hand, pretty much along the line of the first finger pad next to the pad. From there, I would try to get the heel pad on top, but it was a constant battle, especially to see 2-3 (or more to go stronger) knuckles. Holding the grip more diagonally from a similar spot on the pointer finger directly to the heel pad, makes this MUCH easier. Also, having that notch on too of the shaft is also easier in this position. Right Hand. I had ALWAYS tried to get my left thumb in the lifeline gap on the right hand, not on the side of the right thumb. This is a huge difference. By trying to get it in the lifeline, the right hand has to be much more “weak” and on top. On the side of thumb pad, the right hand can be in a stronger position and still exerting good pressure on the club. This position also makes the pointer finger knuckle an easy fit on the shaft. No question this grip will bring about more draws. The only part that makes me angry is that while I have had, from watching and other study, one hand correct before, never both. Looking forward to playing today and seeing how this goes!

Love this video as these grip fundamentals give a feeling of both power and control. One thing I struggle with is rather than placing the right thumb "across the shaft", I find myself placing my right thumb to the right of or behind the shaft because this also gives a feeling of power when I push my thumb forward from this position. I know it is wrong but it's a difficult habit to break. Any thoughts?

The benefits that are claimed for this grip are that it helps people who tend to flip their wrists at impact and also that it helps people who slice the ball. Honestly, it’s old timers with slow club head speed that are telling younger golfers to be easy on the grip. I fell for the advice for a long time and I damn near quit golf. I went back to my old grip pressure and everything felt better. My club speed is 115 plus in comparison to the older gents who have a slower club speed and less grip pressure.

I think I’ve got a reasonable grip but the one aspect mentioned here I don’t quite conform to is no space between the fingers. I use an interlocking grip. If I hold it as I would deem comfortable and look at it from the back, my left fingers are together, and obviously my two little fingers are together, but there is maybe up to 1cm between the right little finger/back of right hand, and third finger of left hand - and there’s up to 5mm between each of my right fingers. If I try to eliminate this it feels like my hands are “bunched up”, and (especially if I try the vardon grip) the feeling is that my “right hand isn’t on the club”. Are there any gains I could realise by fixing this, or would it hurt me more than it would help? I conform to all the other aspects, including all 3 pressure points, with my most comfortable grip.

  • @CHHickory

I have a vicious hook which I hope to fix with the No3 pressure point on the trail hand. My first finger/palm knuckle tends to float leaving my trigger finger at the the first joint and over-active. I would be interested in a commenteg thumbs-up, if you think I'm on the right path. Low handicap of 5 playing proper clubs round a proper course in the UK.

The Pressure Point #2 location in this video is wrong. The PP#2 is on the last three fingers of the left hand (6-C-1 in The Golfing Machine). Indeed the Clubehead Lag of the second Power Accumulator clearly press against the fingers (try to push the clubhead in the plane of motion of the Accumulator #2 against a solid body holding the club only with the left hand... where is the pressure? on the fingers).

Along with a firm secure grip with the right index finger #3 pressure point do you feel that the golf swing thru impact is like swinging a rigid but flexible stick or shaft vs swinging a rope like "the pro" guy Dan Martin advocates with no flexing of the shaft. There seems to be 2 schools of thought but when I watch good players compressing the ball it sure seems they stress the shaft.

Sometimes my right hand moves slightly at the connection of pressure point 2. Is this due to insufficient downward pressure of the right thumb pad on the left thumb, or do you think I may be pulling my upper right hand off by a right elbow move during the takeaway? This error causes errant shots to the right.

Hi, how much ulnar of the left wrist should be in conjunction with a lie angle , lets say the toe a little bit up with regard to body types ( short or tall). I have a problem with arms straight that i need more ulnar to catch up with lie angle.

Hi Rob I see you are doing what I call ‘the twirl waggle’ to feel the weight of the club as it travels on its circular path. Jack Nicklaus did this; but I am the first to name it. If you google ‘the twirl waggle’ you will see my face. And the first videos on the subject. Cheers

@@golftecasia loved this video. It brought me back to the basics and the 6-8 présure you mentioned on the handle is essential for the twirl waggle to work as my upper arms are by my rip cage. Cheers

Hi Rob. I’ve gone from an open club face to anything between 1 degree and 9 degree closed. I’m trying to get consistency can you identify why there’s such a range and how do I address it?

What pressure, if any, is the right thumb, doing?
