  • If you want to hit better, more solid golf shots that fly further through the air working on the trail arm can help this happen.
One of the big differences between the best in the world and the handicap golfer is how they use and move their trial arms through the downswing, this video by Chris Ryan explains just how this trail arm move will change your game for the better

What else do you think is a big difference between a tour player and an amateur?

    • @sirtogii5216

All the pro's hips (or centre pelvis) move away from the ball, pretty much all amateurs move towards it. Guilty as charged....

Pros practice, practice, practice while ams turn up once a week, don’t practice first then self criticise without realising the significance of muscle memory. The other thing I think is attitude towards yourself, I once read that after a bad shot, which we all have, you should speak to yourself as you would to your best mate... not your worst enemy as some do; state of mind is a huge factor in this wonderful game!

The absolute rock solid takeaway. No sway or lifting. Just pure turn and winding up to set the club. The Golf Online slow mo of Tiger is a thing of beauty and is so far away from my swing it makes me want to give up (but i wont!). Great video as always Chris.

I’ve only taken a few lessons in my lifetime (60 now) and been around a few decent players and it’s funny no one has ever stressed how important that move is in the downswing. It’s almost like they don’t want you to know and enjoy watching you struggle and continue to pay for more lessons and have more physical pain from doing it wrong. Sad!

Wow!! I've doing this drill for around three days. Before that my misses were to the right (fades), this drill has almost eliminated these misses. But what is immensely pleasing, is that my contact has gotten so much better and consistent and i'm hitting it longer, straighter and further. I'm amazed at its effectiveness.

Played golf for 50 years and only now know what to do with my right arm! I find that keeping the right elbow close to my body works well. In fact my right arm leads the swing, and that, combined with 90 degree shoulder turns on the backswing and after impact, and a very loose right hand grip, has really transfomed my 8-iron shots this week.

I have watched many TH-cam videos on the swing and 90% are pure junk. This video was however excellent and very correct. You have perfectly outlined the trail arm path to and through the ball. The “throw” takes place from the elbow and as you point out NOT from the wrist ( throw away ). Thanks for producing a fine video. Good production quality as well.

Holy sh*t, this just changed my game 😂. Doing this drill on a simulator, and these little half shots are going 90% the distance my full swing was. Attack angle down from -1 to around -4 to -5 degrees. Chris I just want to say, I absolutely love your videos. They're what got me down to a 1.0 index in my prime in 2019. Since then I had started my career and pretty much stopped playing altogether. I recently got a new job and my office has 2 golf simulators, so I've been able to rekindle that love for the game. This was one of the missing pieces that has been giving me trouble since starting back up again, and hopefully I'm back on my way towards becoming a scratch, and hopefully beyond. Chris, absolutely incredible golf video! Your explanation of the "Trail Elbow" in its natural condition vs impact condition is outstanding. By implementing this move it "naturally" creates FORWARD SHAFT LEAN and promotes compression on the back of the golf ball! I have always been an "Arms and Hands dominant" swinger of the golf club, which puts a lot of undue pressure on the back. This proper move of the TRAIL ELBOW will implement the use of the CORE and less back pressure. Thank you. Keep up the great work! 👍😎🚴‍♂️⛹️‍♀️🤸‍♂️

I’ve been pulling my driver and irons also and am thinking it’s the trail arm. This makes absolute sense so will surely try that next time on the driving range.

Thanks Chris , I always wondered why my club face was closed through impact, I think this drill will help me considerably

Right elbow discussion was masterfully done and a game changer for me personally. Great job.

Perfect drill once again, after I’ve just finished my lessons with my local pro here in Brisbane Qld. This is exactly what we’ve been working on. Cheers Chris.

Very good description of what that elbow needs to do in the golf swing. Thank you for your instruction...it's top drawer. I'm trying to tie that elbow in with rotation now to make sure I'm getting open to the target, as I realize rotation automatically in my mind gives me side bend, shallowing of the club, and carrying the elbow along on the inside/out path that I'm looking for. I think as the left hip opening starts to bring the elbow more in front of your body it becomes a timing issue of when to release that right arm and hands through the ball. Again, great instruction. Thank you.

Great video Chris. Really helped to play your own game and pick the right shots. As I'm pretty much starting out. This will help me a lot

I just want to state that I found this video very helpful. I feel like I've not seen many videos on what the trail arm should be doing particularly in the down swing. I've been taking lessons, and that's one facet we haven't covered yet, but it has helped me tremendously.

Some great points their buddy , that trail arm when tucked in sorts out the low point . Also the turn of the body sorts put the low point more forward to not hit it fat ( behind the ball )
Great post this to remind me of how key it is to tuck in that arm to the belly stomach . I hit my greatest shot with this tucked in right arm the way you done it . Suppose other key quick swing thoughts for me are in this order … straight lead arm …. Tilt ….. turn of the body . I really punched thumped the ball 🏌️‍♂️ with more right arm dominant in power . But before all that this right arm and wrist turn ay set up is the final piece of the puzzle and the steady head . your description of not doing that effects the low point is very well put . Very good point I know but not fully drummed in enough . Sometimes . That’s PGA not PHA lol meant to put . But only in my dreams 😄
Thank you for the videos excellent

Wow, I practiced this at the range before my round and made a big improvement in just one round.

Phenomenal turorial!!! Went out n after a bucket picked up ten yards through impact, but the real key was feeling impact position and the dispersion was reduced from 150 yards in from 15 feet to an average of eight feet n spot on line.
    EXCELLANT JOB CHRIS!!!

Excellent Chris this movement changed my swing from difficult to easy just like that. My back didn't hurt either. I just saw this video yesterday before my round of golf and I noticed big improvement.

I am practicing that in my living room and it really spooks me. I feel totally out of control from my old (and very bad) habit.

I absolutely love this. Could you elaborate a little on the most common mistakes trying to do this? If I hook (or too much draw) could it be that I don't rotate enough? If I slice/fade? I'm trying to do this and I have a fair amount of success, but all shots are not dead straight. It would be nice to have an idea of what could be wrong. Thanks for all the great videos👍

What an incredibly important fix!!! Everyone talks about wrist hinge and backswing/takeaway, but I never saw how to get to impact. (They even talk about release, but not downswing/impact, or at least not this way). Thank you so much.
Question: Can you preset at address and just swing back and through or will there always be some rotation in your trail shoulder joint and elbow?
