The stops speak beautifully. One of the biggest challenges is finding the right stop combinations, and he certainly has mastered that challenge.

A wonderful demonstration of this historic American organ. The sound is 'symphonic' and probably unique for 1868. Thank you, Paul, for presenting an American treasure, and hopefully they will raise the funds to do a restoration soon.
This excellent video is why TH-cam is such a wonderful tool. I’ve always wondered what each of the organ stops actually does to the sound and thanks to Paul, I finally understand and will be much more aware of the marvelous skill of a great organist! I still don’t know how a human can move their feet while accurately hitting all the keys

This is a very typical mid- Victorian English type of organ, but with some very Cavielle- Coll ( sorry about the spelling lol) French firery reeds in all departments, the pedal 16' Trombone being a wonderful stop! But they all sound magnificent! Clearly the organ needs a sympathetic restoration. Certainly all the tracker actions need complete overhaul with new bushings, felts and buttons to quieten and to adjust the depth of touch. And yes I was an organ builder!

Awesome, Paul. You are my favorite current organist to watch! Your pedal technique is so great - you don't ever seem to look at your feet, and you also don't seem to do that thing that lots of organists do where your foot is constantly hitting up against the black keys to find the spaces in between in order to be sure you're on the right pedal. It's fascinating to watch your confident pedaling!
There is nothing wrong with using the black keys as reference. Why do you feel that is a problem?

@@Durufle68 oh no? It's a question of fundamentals the " centre" note of the pedalboard is the middle D which is underneath middle D on the manuals. If the organist centres him or her self over the middle D on the manuals and pedalboard, THAT is the proper reference for finding your way around and learning to lo not to look at your feet while playing. The only time a really good organist looks down is if they are unfamiliar with a console and are looking for a specific toe piston for a registration change, as every organ building firms set out their toe pistons slightly differently thus meaning they have to be sometimes looked for by organists not familiar with that particular console.

Superb demonstration. The Pyramid Diapason is an interesting hybrid diap./Gemshorn blend. Superb organ. Glad it is still there. That tremolo should be easy to fix!
What a wonderful talent to have during this digital age. Thank you for sharing, this is absolutely incredible. My Grandpa Frank was a Funeral Director in a small town in Ohio after he came home with the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in WWII. Grandma Ruth would always play the organ at funerals and I always enjoyed listening to her play. She would have LOVED this.

I lived in NYC for nearly twenty years 1993-2009 and was acquainted with the Great Grand Daughter of Henry Erben. I was in negotiations with her to be able to sample this rare instrument for Hauptwerk in 2006, but moved away from the City back to the Upper Central USA. The organ is now in much better shape because it was in very bad shape in 2006, but with a little TLC it is limping along. Lots of wind leaks and pipes that wouldn't speak. Not to mention the missing cabinetry for the console It is unusual in NYC to be in an area that is relatively quiet but tucked into the corner of Little Italy and back from the street was a bonus! This is the really only Henry Erben that is untouched.

Paul, So glad you got to come to the United States. I've really enjoyed all your videos on American organs. I live in pretty much "no mans land" when it comes to pipe organs here in Southern Mo. We have organs, but rarely big ones. Sure is nice to hear you play. Some day I hope to be able to hear you play in person. Recordings are a blessing, but hearing it live is something else. Thank You for sharing this with us. I envy your talent.

This is just amazing for an instrument that's over 150 years old. I can't imagine how many pieces there are and how long it took to assemble on site... and how many workers would be involved to fine tune everything. BTW, I have been "behind the scenes" on several old organs and it seems to be a tradition for workers and repair crews to leave hand scribbled notes of what they have done over the years. These writings are usually on the walls in utility areas or on the back of the pipe racks... and dated as well. These are places where things never get painted over, so you can also see original building details.
That organ is so powerful. I love it.

I am completely enamored with your simple, straightforward, yet thorough exploration of this great organ's voicings across each of the primary divisions with particular attention given to the expressiveness, timbre and musicality of specific ranks, combinations and mixtures that comprise each division.
It was wonderful to hear you progress through the voicings of the Great, Choir & Swell in such a logical & methodical manner because I am very familiar with this instrument from several phenomenal recordings...one in particular that immediately comes to mind is Michael Murray's concert recordings of Music for Organ, Brass & Percussion performed with Empire Brass, released circa 1990.
The moment you touched the Swell manual after pulling the stop for that brilliant reed ....I was instantly transported back to the moment I first heard track 10 on that CD, which I haven't listened to in over a decade btw, yet the unmistakable 'fire' that resides within that triumphant stop is the heart of the bright wind voicing utilized by Murray in his performance of Monteverdi's "Deus In Adjutorium" from Vespers. Also the Dulciana is quite impressive for its incredible softness....something Murray used to phenomenal effect on track 4 (if memory serves)...."Pavane" and later it is revisited in "The Prayer of Saint Gregory," which to this day remains my favorite piece from this compilation.

Perhaps you can tell me whether or not you've had the opportunity--and imho, tremendous fortune--to do a similar exploration of the massive organ (with its restored antiphonal & State Trumpets in the North Naive) at St.John The Divine in NYC?
Sadly, it is my understanding that a small albeit very detrimental fire in the cathedral crypt put all of the pipe organs out of commission around the Easter 2019 timeframe and the cathedral is using an all electronic, painstakingly sampled A.Skinner organ (that is quite remarkable in its own right supposedly) and it is to be used untill completion of all cleaning & restoration work. It may be complete by now, though I am not certain. It breaks my heart that yet ANOTHER fire has taken its toll on the Great Organ....as if 2001 was not devastating enough!

What a beautiful instrument ! Great chance the plenum will sound even better without all 8 and 4 ft stops open. Nevertheless a great delight to listen to !
Fantastic instrument. Old instruments like this beg the question why some of them were replaced, often with inferior instruments. The quietest strings, particularly in New York City, are not stops that would be put on a modern instrument in the city, as the city was quieter in 1868. It looks like it could use some restoration, but hopefully not changes. An instrument like this needs only restoration, but not renovation or changes.
I have played since I was 5 and could barely reach any oh the keys on the manuals let alone the pedals... I still play but am in no way near the caliber you have achieved.. you not only are a fabulous musician but seem to be guided by a solid heart and playful soul. I could watch and listen to you for as long as you would allow. Going to attend one of your performances soon I hope. Til then.. keep tracking!

I honestly had no idea they all sound so different. But it make sense. The organs and their church homes are all unique. This one is my favorite. Thank you for these videos! My daughter and I love them. She has autism and our local pipe organ helps her attend the whole Mass. It is a very sensory instrument. Just subscribed.

As an organ-builder, I can't help noticing the lights, screwed onto the case, the way that the keys are out of adjustment, and (from what I can see on a video like this) badly in need of cleaning. There may be good reasons for some of this, but perhaps the Church should take organ maintenance more seriously. There is no excuse, for instance, for dirty keys.
Well, It looks like you have begun a career of playing organs in the States. Well done, Paul. It is interesting to hear you play so many different organs, sampling each with your little improves that sound so pleasing. No matter what organ you play it always seems to nice yet there is such variation between organ. Unlike another organist, youy praise the variations and the tonal qualities rather than complain about the differences in the toan characteristics of the stops of the same name. You have done much to increase the interest in these old organs. You certainly make them sound better than most modern collections of pipes. By the way, the one without a name is like a string, maybe a wood violone 16'. Ahh. The last hurrah. Bring out all the stops - Impressive, Paul

WHILE IN THE STATES DID YOU GET TO PLAY ANY NOACK ORGANS? THEY ARE TRACKER ACTION, AND THEY HAVE A WONDERFUL CLARITY IN THEIR VOICES. IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED ONE I THINK YOU WOULD LOVE THE ORGANS. BY ALL MEANS IF YOU FIND ONE, GIVE IT A TRY.
