Assisted by Mr. Monte Maxwell, Director of Chapel Music, USNA Chapel Organist
    United States Naval Academy Organ
    Annapolis, Maryland
The Naval Academy Chapel organ dates back to 1908. The Hutchins Organ Company of Boston, MA built the original instrument. In 1940, the Möller Organ Company of Hagerstown, MD was contracted to build a larger instrument. The current instrument, comprised of both pipe and digital voices, totals 268 ranks and is controlled by two consoles.
The chancel’s new five-manual console, crafted by R. A. Colby, Inc. of Johnson City, TN, boasts 522 draw knobs, and in addition to the other controls available to the organist, yields 796 total controls operated via computer control systems and the digital pipe reproduction voices all furnished by Walker Technical Company of Zionsville, PA.

I played this on the chimes at my church as the Challenger Astronauts were laid to rest. An experience I'll never forget.

This was played at my late husband's funeral as a favor to me. He was retired Air Force and I am a Navy veteran. Thank you for playing it so beautifully,

Monte was the organist at my church before he went to Annapolis. His postludes kept everyone in their seats. I do miss that.

As a former Great Lakes sailor, I would often find this hymn going through my head on a difficult watch when the seas were high and sails were double reefed with a storm tri.

My hymnal attributes it ro Mixhael Haydn.
Whenever we have it as a processional, I want to dance a lendlr down the asile. (Too latr for a minurtte, to early for a waltz.)

The same tune is used for the airman's hymn.

great to see young people taking up the organ. I can't understand why more are not lured by the possibility of making such a grand sound.
Interesting fact. Anyone interested in visiting the Navel chapel, will learn that the Academy does not allow private cars of visitors on the base. You have to park outside the gates and walk onto campus.

I think, you are misinformed. I too am a young man and there are plenty of us youngsters who play the organ and even compose for it.

Must be annoying as all hell to have some jack-knob randomly flipping stops on and off.

The guy flipping the stops on and off is the organist and director of music at the chapel, and the one who designed the entire organ.

An organ is very difficult to play and very different than many instruments in it's size. It's designed to be done by three people. Part of it that controls the air has been connected to electricity. However you need one person to play and one person to do the rest.

@StoreeDenson the organ was redone in 1941. He didn't design or make the organ. You're right about him being the instructor.
