in lang lang bio, it stated that his father was good enough to be professional but at the time china wasnt big on music and there was very little freedom so he had to give up on his musical career. that's why he placed his hopes on lang lang
Well yea it was communist China, China started cracking down in music so there aren’t any mainland musicians So the only way to get into music is to either be lucky to be from HK/Macau or ‘flee’ there. Also probably Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore.
@EmmanuelttPiano Lang Lang may have not been happy in his childhood, but as an adult you can clearly see he’s grateful for all the discipline his dad has given him. So I wouldn’t call it abusive
That's partially true, but his dad also put huge pressure on him and for example wanted Lang Lang to kill himself when he didn't succeed in a piano competition. The pressure worked though
Not when he did not succeed in a piano competition, but when a teacher unreasonably criticized Lang Lang in a way that his father believed Lang lang did something wrong.
KISSIN NI Actually this piece is 赛马, quite a famous erhu piece. Langlang introduced it as "Competing horses" but the more proper translation would probably be Horseracing.
Papa Lang used to be a professional Erhu performer. However, due to many reasons, he could not play professionally in an orchestra. But he is musical and artistic for sure. Edit: thank you all for the likes

RamirezHD yes... you should read his autobiography, his father was a madman doing whatever he could to let Lang Lang reach this position. He even gave up his job as a police man for Lang Lang's career. His dad is obviously damn proud now.
Yeah cakez, I read somewhere about all the struggles they had in the family to put him out. It was sort of like a Mozart type of story. I am really happy for his father. Thanks to the family efforts and his natural talent we can enjoy exquisite music from Lang.
The brilliant Lang Lang, a longtime favourite of mine excels in this duet with his father, Lang Guo-ren. The music is fun and laughs at itself. The ancient instrument leads the piano and then later, dances with the piano, an embrace of two rhythms. The sum product of these virtuosos produces a light care-free masterpiece with such a loving intertwining of father and son. I see it as a musical interpretation of love, life and the marvellous expression of being alive. Thank you so much for this admirable video presentation.
Every time I watch this I have tears in my eyes- it’s not because of their astonishing skills but how immersed they are into the music. The enormous pleasure in their eyes shows how much they enjoy playing the piece together and that deeply touches my soul. Kudos to the Dad who finally made it to the stage all musicians dream to get on. There is a great biography by BBC about Lang Lang called “ Do or Die”, for those who were arguing below about why Lang lang’s dad didn’t have a career as professional er hu player, watch the biography starting at 28:00. Both Lang lang’s dad and mom were talented musicians since they were young, yet unfortunately during the time they grew up, the political group that one’s family was assigned to dictated the fate of the entire family. For example, one wouldn’t be admitted to college or find a decent job if s/he was from a wrong kind of family. Lang lang’s grandfather on his dad’s side was labeled as anti-revolutionary and was persecuted. As a result, his dad would have no chance to get a good job as a erhu musician no matter how good he was.
I only read the persecuted part because that interested me It was all due to Honorable Chairman Mao Zedong sparking a cultural revolution that destroyed cultural artifacts, burned down historical sites, and ostracized anyone who wasn't for communism. It still was a major league problem heading into 1976, during the transition to socialism with Chinese characteristics because you were not allowed to protest lest the army mow you down.
First, the piece was AMAZING!!! The contrast between the 2 instruments was perfect!! Next, it made it better that it was he and his father! When he said..."this is my father" we could hear the pride! from Lang Lang and say the pride in his father's face!!!
Bravo, bravissimo! Schön, dass er auch die Musik seines Volkes aufführt. Sein Vater ist genauso genial wie er. Eine Freude, die beiden zu sehen und zu hören. Das waren wirklich zwei wilde Pferde
Did anyone notice the chord they used at 3:09 and again at 3:19? The traditional piece uses a iv chord there, but this performance used a bII (called neapolitan I believe?), which is definitely more romantic and a little westernized. A great little touch!
The final bow always brings a tear to my eye - they are both so proud of each other I think it is a very special moment not only for them but for all of us.
Wow! What a super performance from Father and Son. It is glorious to watch and listen to them. Magnificent! Thank you ever so much to both of you and God bless you more and more abundantly.
The erhu is so-named because it has two strings. Those two strings can produce an incredible variety and range of sounds, and in the hands of a skilled player, it's like a magician's hat.
Lang Guo Ren made Lang Lang practice 40 hrs a day and now he's a rival of Ling Ling Edit: but to be fair, compare this to other versions. This has a lot of emotion behind it that many other artists don't include. I love how they r actually mimicking the horses and not just playing a random piece
Fabulous in so many ways - the love, talent and pride between a father and son, the very warm American reception and the beautifully played evocative music.
The emotion and togetherness, how they swell in one sound and work so well. It’s impressive with the passion and phrasing. Gorgeous, his father was amazing and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Horse racing in the East has no track, but runs wildly on the grassland. If you are far ahead, you can slow down and browse the scenery easily. This is why the slow lyricism appears in the Er Hu solo 《Horse Racing》. This is incredible in the Western horse racing scene.

It’s just perfect! PERFECT! I can see two horses competing in the grassland of inner Mongolia. I hear the joyful galloping sound, the waves of grass, the cheering of people and so many more. It’s an absolute pleasure to hear it every time.
