    Baseball's smart for having a separate award for the best pitcher. Sure, sometimes the Cy Young winner also wins MVP, but only very rarely. The NFL should follow suit and make an awards explicitly for the best QB, best (non-QB) offensive, and best defensive players.

    • @bulldogsbob

      It’s also easier in baseball to tell who is the best player since unlike football you can be great on your own. A hitter can still be great on a bad team but a qb won’t win anything on a team of scrubs.

  • @joshharrison9054
    @joshharrison9054 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +61

    That’s why I like the CFL’s system better. Every team’s city nominates a player for each award: Most Outstanding Player, Most Outstanding Canadian, Most Outstanding Defensive Player, Most OutStanding Offensive Lineman, Most Outstanding Special Teams Player, Most Outstanding Rookie, and Most Outstanding Coach. Then each nominee for each are finalized into division awards, with one representative from each division for each award, then the finalists are voted on for the league award. The teams, as well as football reporters, have a say in these votes and make it far more even, the only problem is that two players from the same team can’t be nominated for the same award, ie 2023 where Zach Collaros and Brady Oliveira were both MOP candidates, but Brady Oliveira got the MOP vote.

    One idea I've had for a while is conference MVP. It makes sense considering how the NFL awards conference players of the week and month, so maybe just scratch MVP and hand out conference player of the year instead. It would've helped a lot of guys (Drews Brees) get more awards, and I also think it would've helped non-quarterbacks get more recognition.

    Always good to remind people how awesome Alan Page was. And as a kid I watched that Lawrence Taylor season and can say nothing was ever like that so if you try to judge current defensive players by those seasons it will never work but I think that's what they do. Defense would have to have a season like Page or LT when those were just outstanding ones that won't likely happen again. It's sad but it's what the league has turned into. You either play superhuman or the award is a QB award.

    The one thing that ppl forget is separating the award would kill the .01% chance that a dominate, game warping player could break what any body thought was possible and be more valuable than quarterbacks. On defense you would have to allow no points while generating interceptions and scoop and scores by yourself while carrying your team to a perfect record. Or on offense break a NFL record by almost double with a mid quarterback.

    The NFL MVP is the most valueless MVP award of all major best player of the year awards there are in the world. Like, no matter how much people want to twist it to the point the QB is the only relevant position (not just most important, only position with all the team stats and rings being abused as QB player stats in all time rankings), it's still extremely unrealistic that QB's are the only realistic candidates for this award anno nowadays and even in the so called run first eras they dominated the award.
    Since 2007 all but one MVP has been won by only one position group. In general the award exists since the 1950s (including a pair of shared awards) and barring 16 RB's (last one in 2012), 2 defensive players (last 1 in 1985) and 1 kicker (1980s as well), a QB is always the winner. 1 of 25 starting positions. At the same time people still dare to say this is the ultimate team sport, while in reality no sport inflates the same singular position as much as American football does with QB.

Sure, by definition of value Lamar Jackson was the correct winner because he stayed healthy and operated his offense efficiently in a year where many QBs were hurt and not playing well. But to call his season outstanding would be a stretch imo. He played on a juggernaut and was helped out a lot by his OL and D.

      @stevenstocker7425 He won by default? Lamar had an impressive year, and 49 voters out of 50 voters thought he deserved it the best. But my biggest question is, would we be having this conversation if lamar jackson was white? Because I've seen a lot of people now say mvp is an "inclusion award," like just accept that your favorite white guy didn't win it. I'm not saying you, but I've seen a lot of people's arguments boil down to lamar only won it because he's black. And I think it's sad that people look at the stats and not the actual game. You don't need the best stats to be the best (Kansas city team this year wasn't the best but still won)

    The MVP is different for every team. It's usually the really dependable guy who can throw/catch the long bomb or has a knack for breaking protection and herding QBs like a sheepdog. But it can also be that One Guy who that Incredible Thing that won your team that Signature Win.
    And nobody ever agrees on who the MVP is. It's just something else to argue about 😁

    People love to whine about MVP going to quarterbacks, but there are only like 15 guys on the planet that can play QB consistently well without tragically screwing up multiple times a game. To me, that means it’s the hardest position to play well in sports. Every other position has scores of guys that can play it competently. It’s also the most singularly important position in all of team sports. If you have the 20th best QB, the whole team is dead in the water. If you have the 20th best anything else, it can be overcome if you have a good QB.
    No player at any other position is more valuable than the best quarterback. It’s not bias, it’s an affirmation of the fact that they have rarer and more important skill sets than anyone else.

    Baseball is the ultimate team sport. The Angels had 2 transcendent players on their roster for years and consistently finished below .500. In football every team with a good QB is going to make the playoffs more often than not.
    Actually no sport relies more on 1 player than football. Which is why only football players are saying its the ultimate team sport. Because there arent other guys out here saying it.

    Because the NFL doesn't have an "official" MVP award, the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year awards are the highest honors given by the NFL. I wouldn't be opposed to an official quarterback of the year award though (or a special teamer of the year-special teams erasure is even worse than big man erasure).

      @@kevinpowers3907 Most valuable does not mean best at what they do. This is where the disconnect is. If Derrick Henry is the best at his job among all offensive players in the NFL, he should win OPOY. If what Lamar Jackson does from the QB position is the most valuable single player in the NFL, he should win MVP. These are not the same thing. It could be that Henry is the best RB, but that isn’t nearly as valuable as being the best QB, and it never will be because of the current rules of football. Therefore we give out an award for the most valuable player AND the player who was the best at their position. Sometimes it’s the same, sometimes it’s not. If you want to change the label to best QB that’s fine. But in the old days, before the forward pass was broken, and before the salary cap existed, there was a more legitimate argument for an RB to be the most valuable.

    Honestly, I'm also very much in favor of having a QB award and excluding them from the Offensive player of the year conversation. This year with what a monstrous season CMC had and it generally being kind of a down year for QBs I thought "now or never", and apparently the answer is never. Not that Lamar didn't play an outstanding season, he did and I generally don't have a problem with him winning it. I just hope the NFL makes a change to their award system. At least Lamar won it, I think it would've been a huge slap in the face to CMC if Purdy had won it. He was so clearly the motor of that offense, more impressive that he was with Aiyuk and Deebo at WR, Kittle at TE and not to forget the best FB In the game in Jusczyk.

    @nate8415 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    yes, Quarterback is the "most valuable" in the NFL, but i think the MVP award should be viewed as "wins/point differential over average level replacement". You can slide a lot of QBs in that niners system and have similar production to Brock Purdy, (he is a great player and had a great season not a diss on Purdy) so i think its kind of silly he was an MVP candidate. where as if you replace a guy like JJ watt in his MVP caliber season with an average DE, the Texans would be a much worse team.
    This concept of "wins/point differential over average level replacement" is opposed to Set The Edges idea of renaming it "most outstanding player" because if a player at a low value position has an outstanding season, positional value should play a factor. I think edge rusher, considering they are often taken in the first couple picks of the draft like QB, and considering the impact they have on the passing game, is a prime position that should be considered for this award.
    For example, if Myles Garrett plays even better this year and the Browns are the 1 seed, I think he would be worthy of MVP over say another similar caliber season by Lamar Jackson

    Honestly? I think they should just make the MVP a structured award that goes to the QB of the team with the best record, since that's apparently all it is anyways. Lamar's season this year was, statistically, ~120% of Tyrod Taylor's 2015 season with the Bills. After that season, the best you would see Tyrod ranked was between 15-20 best QB in the league. Jackson won MVP with 49 out of 50 first place votes, with some media outlets upset that he didn't win unanimously. If the biggest difference between 20th best QB and unanimous MVP is going 13-4 instead of 8-8, just make that an official award and do something else for the rest of the league.
