I just got in to read the comments. No wasting 40 minutes of my life to hear talking about something that we all already know.
But it wasn't about the contract
Let’s be honest, this video is way longer than it needed to be. It could have easily been condensed into a ten-minute video.
Baseball only exists in my life now because of this channel.
This channel is the ONLY place I keep up With baseball now. MLB or ESPN needs to make sure this dude gets a contract or something. The story telling and editing on this channel is elite.

BDE is entertaining, but his videos are riddled with errors.
28:13 no! Yanks won in the 90s because the baseball people were actually able to do their jobs when Steinbrenner was suspended from baseball (and unable to meddle). They were the ones who drafted and developed guys like Jeter and Rivera, and made shrewd trades.
The Yanks actually regressed when Steinbrenner started spending ridiculously big on free agents.
25 teams dream of being as good as the Yankees "regression"
Absolutely! That was Michaels' and Showalter's dynasty. Steinbrenner getting banned was the best thing to happen to the team - just like in '75.
Facts
The homegrown or recently developed talent on those Yankees teams was ridiculous: Also, Bernie Williams, Andy Pettite, Paul O'Neill, Wetteland, etc. They were playing Epstein ball before Boston was.
I know it makes sense as a business move, considering he's a baseball channel ans sports gambling is done openly now in the US, but man gambling sponsors always gives me the ick. I've known people in my life with gambling addiction and it's rough, for them and for the people around them.
I feel the same, but I don't think its a good excuse. People who don't care about baseball watch his videos just b/c they're entertaining, and he's about to hit a million subs, so I think he could make quite a lot from many sponsors.
Agree I never liked the sports gambling sponsors and I know many, many people agree with us
can't blame him though. the sponsors pay great. In the end, it's up to us if we gamble.
Agreed, the rampant gambling advertisement is disgusting.
I mean, ultimately it’s up to the viewer to know to be responsible with their money, but I definitely understand where you’re coming from.
Messi is earning $674 million IN 4 YEARS. As a 38 year old in a sub-par league. Soto's contract is big but mlb objectively doesn't have the most money going around
Dude, please. Apple is paying Messi, not MLS. They are doing this in an ATTEMPT to get you to forget that you signed up to AppleTV to watch Messi sweat his way around the swamps they play on in Miami. They did this because of Messi's career. The reason that they CAN do this is because Apple is a hardware company, not a sports company. They are doing this so you watch games on your iPhone. Without Apple's involvement, Messi would be sportswashing in Saudi Arabia, instead of Miami, Florida.
Thank you!
dang. i thought he made "just" 50M a year
No, that was his contract right after his prime at Barcelona (2017-2021). His current contract as a 38 year old in Miami is worth around 50-60m a year
@@bbwblkYeah he makes 50 million at Miami annually plus a possible 100 million from MLS and Apple TV licensing, as well as being given partial ownership to an MLS team following his retirement
BUT the 674M contract in the comment is referring to his last four-year contract with Barca in 2017 where they paid him 145m per season and about 95m in bonuses
Comparing this to the Ohtani contract just isn't an apples to apples comparison, at all. Ohtani - most if it is deferred so the team can spend on others players - Sotos is not, that hurts the Mets. Ohtani is a multi tool player - Soto is not, he's a two tool player. Ohtani's presence on the Dodgers has increased revenue for the Dodgers in merch and in Japanese TV and licensing, Sotos does not. Sure it'll help the Mets some but not in the same way. I just hope the owners wake up to the insanity of this contract and band together to not do it again - that's the only way this cancer doesn't spread. No one player is worth $50m AAV (with none deferred). That's not likely to happen I know but it's a collective virus spreading through the league and it's up to everyone to stop it.
This comment has more points about why the contract makes no sense than the entire 40 minute video
Ohtani is on his second Tommy John lmao you’re acting like he’s genuinely gonna be pitching for much longer

Tough shit really, still gotta pay the man. It's uh, risky, to say the least.

@@wumbojet This is what happens when two billionaires in the biggest market whose teams are both coming off a strong season get into a bidding war over a 25 year old superstar.
add Juan Soto Day to Bobby Bonilla Day for the Mets for the next 15 years.
Hands-down, the worst contract I’ve ever seen by far. Ohtani got 700 million, now this is my understanding of it, because he’s an ace pitcher which gets you about 350 in the market, he’s a league Homerun leader, which will get another 3:50 in the market. And that’s how you got him. Soto wasn’t even the best hitter or outfielder on the last team he played for, let alone in the league.
Plus, Ohtani is a global athlete, so he brings in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue EVERY year for the team who has him. The contract pays for itself without even taking his on-field play into consideration.
It doesn’t matter about money cohen has so much he could give 1 billion dollars to some minor leaguer and still be richer than everyone im just happy we got him and don’t have those cheap wilpons anymore
Well we ain't the dodgers, we could buy 20 sotos and still buy another 5 billion+ open

Setting up his family for life loving what he does is a blessing. To whoever looked out for the family is real af..real ones know ❤
I’d argue though the total is larger, Ohtani’s is much more lucrative because it has 5 less years on it, for $700m and he already has a ring to validate it, plus his third MVP.
Ohtani made his own money through name recognition, merchandising etc plus his was deferred. Ohtani contract was no brainer actually.
I think it's based on how much the contract agreed to pay. I'm not sure if it's guaranteed but if it is then it'll be based on the biggest "guaranteed" money. In sports like the NFL, you can have huge contracts but not all of that money is guaranteed compared to the NBA & even football like the premier league, the standard practice is guaranteed contracts.
765 million dollars is insane no matter what you do
For 15 years too
The fact that he probably won’t be there for 15 years makes it moreso
Except for the guy who will make billions in that time signing his check. Everyone talks about the player making too much while the owners silently take all the money
I’ll already call myself a silly idealist so you don’t have to lol but I just can’t help but think it’s baffling that people get paid this much to do something that other people would pay TO DO. Getting paid that much for something that was your childhood DREAM, that millions of people would give anything to do….. He doesn't have to play, if he is injured because it's a guaranteed contract.
39:56 You said it was only a 6 million difference BUT if you count the suite his family gets for EVERY home game, plus security at away games, that makes the deal worth like 10 million more based on how close he is with his family and everything
Soto is deserving of $500+ mil but with the absurd number he got this past off season it makes Ohtani look underpaid in retrospect.
Ohtani looked underpaid when we learned about his deferrals. If he averages 130 IP the next 6-8 years, his deal will be a steal. If he has to stop pitching after a couple years, it won't be so great.

People keep shitting on the Mets for spending this amount of money yet Yankees and blue jays were all in at around 760 as well with red sox well over 700. Steve wants to win, and if it means signing him to well above the average contract then so be it. Mets fans are happy, and so is he.
Problem is he isn't going to win a World Series, a team is, and the Mets have a ton of holes especially in pitching. With Soto's contract alone they could have signed Max Friend, Devin, and Corbin Burnes. That right there would have made them a contender. Signing a guy for 700M who can't play D, is a horrible base running, and basically just walks or hits singles, is not a good contract.
From a Yankees fan, I think that’s the problem. We all got played by Boras cuz as amazing as Soto is I just don’t see how he can be making more than Ohtani.
@@ooo_Kim_Chi_ooo Max Frieds contract is just as bad or even worse. He's an aging pitcher signed for 8 years for 218 million, that is a massive overpay. Mets signing Juan Soto may be an overpay but he's a hitter for life, when he's unable to perform in the outfield he will be used as a DH. Starting pitching needs help but I'm banking on trading for Cease eventually. And then hopefully signing vladdy in the off season next year. Mets are building to be a world series capable team and Soto is a very valuable player for that.
Not only is he not worth that contract but imo the Mets lost to LA cuz of lack of pitching so seeing them add Soto and not much in terms of the amazing pitching that was available this year doesn’t make sense to me
@@Notyouraveragebot115ohtani’s production is going to drop, his pitching is not likely to be what it was pre injury, not to mention he is older. This is still easily my favorite baseball channel! I miss Juan, thanks for winning us the World Series!
It’s going to be hilarious when it’s revealed that he was in fact not 19 and actually 28 years old.
Same with Pujols
I think that will void the contract.
I wouldn't doubt it
@@AyeThatsHandsomePete i remember going to an Angels game, we sat 2 rows up from the Angels dugout and Pujol was like "32" at the time I remember thinking that is THE OLDEST looking 32 year old I've ever seen... he looked 45
@@seankiesling2054i love how bro looks the exact same
“Soto IS 5 years younger than Ohtani.” *allegedly
Making a DH the highest paid player in baseball is a mutual delusion by the entire baseball world. It's stupid and doesn't make any sense.
Correction. Making Soto the highest paid player is delusional. Soto has not won a league MVP. Yup, that's elite.
@@encinobalboa I saw someone comparing him to Ted Williams. Ted had like 4 seasons 1.000 OPS seasons by the time he was Soto's age and Soto has zero. Soto's best early 20s season is .300 OPS less than Ted's best. Not even close!
It’s pocket change to cohen because he is so rich so it’s actually a great signing. Not everyday you get a top ten player on your team
@@XJapanGonnaGiveItToYa-cd4xj I thought the Ted Williams comparison was bonkers as well. Ted was a student of the game which means that his swing aged well as he progressed in years. Ted did hitting instruction videos which shows how fundamentally sound he was. OTOH, Soto has an ugly swing that relies on his youth and athleticism which is fine until be reaches 30 or suffers a significant injury. There are many batters who were all world to begin but could not maintain. Yelich and Bellinger come to mind. Pujols is another. I think Soto and his contract will not age well.
ted Williams also played when they were only whites and most of the guys who played were not doing baseball full-time. So if soto did instructional videos too then he’s fundamentally sound lol. Soto has a beautiful swing that he’ll be able to hit just fine going into his late 30s can you tell me what is ugly and what about it gonna get him hurt when he’s in his 30s. And your whole argument goes out the door when you compare pujols and juan soto to yelich who had a whopping four good years and bellinger who’s had two good years.
He didn't leave for five million dollars. The AAV between the two contracts are very different. He'd need to wait one extra year to earn his full contract with the Yankees. That's a big deal. More money for less time? Everyone would take that deal.
Shohei deferred -680M, He should learn some finance to take what's on the table not defer it
this video also completely ignores Soto's contract with the Mets having a player opt-out after five years, that flexibility goes a long way and was likely a major factor in him choosing that deal
@@girishbatavi To be fair, I'm sure he knew the concept of deferrals and the impact of money. He's shown time and time again that he just doesn't care about money (which makes the gambling scandal all the more confusing when people are convinced that he's the mastermind). In Japan, he opted to stay in player dorms when he was a bonafide star. He lived off of about $2,000/month doing that while letting his mom manage his finances. His focus was to win a World Series and become the best baseball player ever. The complete opposite of Soto (who also has a World Series). He already makes more than most of us regular folk will ever see in baseball, and so much more in endorsements. Honestly, if you count endorsements, I feel like he'll make a lot more than Soto. But Ohtani doesn't care about that, why should we?
@@stevenn6410 As far as what's been reported in media about Shohei from Japan and US, I have interred that
1. He has earned enough money for his family.
2. He wants to play two ways until he retires or injures one side completely
3. He wants to leave a legacy, which means he wants to win WS 🏆. So, he knew that deferrals was the best way to achieve that.
Was making sarcastic comments on Someone giving lectures on finance 101 that present value of money is greater than future value, for Shohei he knows Championship brings more present value in Legacy, money than pure 💰
i dont even give a fuck about baseball and yet you make it enjoyable to learn about and watch. u da goat👑👑👑
Who is Hail Steinbrenner lol
How dare this be in the 2nd page of comments
Came here to ask the same question
Nah, he just likes him so whenever the name comes up he heils him. 🙋♂️
You can blame Steve Cohen for ruining the free agent market with this ridiculous over spending of one player. Soto is a great player. But 700 million is just a big overpay
Believe me, this is eventually gonna go down as the worst contract in all of sports history.
they toss around millions of money like its business as usual
@RinslerRR i understand that but for 99% of people that money could change your life
"There's a storm coming, Mr. Wayne. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us."
@BaseballDoesntExist
Really enjoy the videos. Was wondering if next video could be about old time baseball stories. I feel a lot of your viewers would really enjoy that. Keep up the great work.
3:57 BDE Brainrot before GTA 6 🙏😭
0:32 hearing this honestly made me physically sick
Baha
Then go watch WNBA.
He is a way better Baseball player than Caitlyn Clark is a Basketball Player
Even Ted Williams wouldn't be able to live up to that contract and he's the last guy to hit .400 in a season.
33:28 we wished a-rod was in the hof :(
Trying to get my 5 yo nephew to start throwing pitches 😂
just caught up 5 yrs of soto an baseball - thank you so much...
365 days less work for 5 million dollars more?
I totally get it.
I do not think they really wanted him at that price. They knew that offer would be declined.
Exactly. 1 year early he can become a full time dad/husband. It's not about the 5mil its about the 1 less year.
Also, i imagine some of it might be legacy related there are a lot less stars in the Mets History
the video is misleading there's an opt in which would take it over 800million, so it's 50million difference not 5
@@TheGamerKid92 I thought the same thing but then I relooked at it and I really doubt he will optout. Cole opted out (well technically I guess he didn't) and the Yankees called him on his bluff. Soto will be entering he 30s and thinking on the open market he will get another 50mil? I think contracts are not going to be that crazy in that short a time frame even if he absolutely balls out. He's already getting way more than Ohtani and Trout and everyone else. I imagine he might actually lose over $100mil by oting out and maybe even have to settle for a 5 year deal and then a 3 year deal and then 1 or two year deals to end his career.
14:25 the red Sox would like a word
Not only once but twice! Baby Ruth AND mookie betts
As someone who is not a baseball fan, I appreciate this video giving me an insight on who this guy was and why he got all that money
40 minutes of Baseball Doesn't Exist? Time to eat.
this will go down as the worst contract in sports history.
No, it wont
@@TheFruitney meet me here 1/8/2035 so i can say i told you so
@oneguy1987 I have a feeling it's gonna be much sooner than that lol
Soto will be 10 years into this contract and slowing down significantly on the backside of his 30's and still have 5 years and hundreds of millions left to go. All guaranteed. It's def going to go down as an awful deal.
At least with Ohtani, it makes more sense. He's a global star. These types of contracts across all the sports are going to turn off more and more fans too
@@BlyGuy10 years? He looks like he’s 30, I give him 5 years before the decline
I love this page so much. Keep going bro
Another big piece I believe is the opt-out in year 5 which the Mets can void if they increase the AAV of his contract by $5 million, which would leave the amount of the contract to 15 years, $805 mil
765 million for a possible DH is insane
Possible??? You saw that gut with the photos of the Mets he’s gotta be pushing 240 now at only 6’1. Horrible defender, horrible leader, and oh yeah he gonna be a $765 million DH come 2 years when he’s 27 (aka 37) 😂

The only thing worse than Soto lying about his age is the 'Soto shuffle'
