IS ROMAN BRIDGER IN THE 1ST SCREAM MOVIE? | SCREAM (1996)

  • Fans have speculated about Roman Bridger's involvement in SCREAM (1996) for so long now. So today, I decided to look at the facts and do some digging to see if Roman is BELIEVED to be in, or around during the events of the first Woodsboro Ghostface killing spree back in 1996. Surpsingly, Roman's involvement hasn't been denied nor confirmed, but what I have found is intersting and deserves speculation.

It is an interesting theory, but it does fall apart when you remember Roman said he had no idea Billy and Stu was gonna make a film of their own that would turn Sidney into a star, I.E. the events of the original Scream. He set the plans in motion for Billy to kill Maureen, but he had no idea Billy and Stu was gonna go on a killing spree a year later with the intent of killing Sidney as well.

You gotta remember, though. It is impossible for the Ghostface in the supermarket (at least) to be Billy OR Stu because at the same time as this was going on, they were at the video store hassling Randy.
Which means that someone else was there in 1996. I don't think Billy or Stu killed Himbry. I think that Roman killed Principal Himbry with the intention of making sure that the plan went smoothly. Stu had no idea Billy was going to sell him out in the end, which means Roman was initiating their actual plan while Billy had Stu create as much chaos as possible.
Roman was there to observe and clean up a mess that they left. He wanted everything to go smooth because he really was that methodical.

I totally agree about Roman being in the original Scream and that it was him and only him that was stalking Sydney in the woods and at the super market. Others argue that Roman wasn’t “cannon” yet in the Scream movie until the third movie, so he doesn’t count. But I disagree on that theory since he’s pretty much the puppet master/director as well as the third eyes and ears for Billy and Stu. I think Roman was the one who attacked Sidney in the bathroom at school. That was probably supposed to be Billy but it was definitely not some prankster, that was a very sinister and violent attack. The noises that Ghostface was making did not sound like Billy or Stu when they were in the costume. They also did a callback to that very scene in Scream 3 when Sidney encounters Angelina (originally written to be Roman's accomplice) in the bathroom and even squats down to look for feet just like in the first movie. As we know from Scream 3, Roman was obsessed with Sidney for having the happy, quiet life he never had and was also a stalker since he filmed Maureen with her lovers. I definitely think Roman would have wanted to keep an eye on Sidney especially with her in the spotlight after being attacked by the "mysterious killer" (Roman had to have known it was Billy and Stu since they were going after Sidney the year after they took out her mom). I think Roman was definitely in Woodsboro during the first murder spree.

  • @jamesware9099

I loved scream 3. I found it very interesting , and necessary to how they did Maureen’s backstory and how it tied in to the filming of the new stab. I thought it was very cleverly done, how they incorporated what goes on in movie productions, the good bad and ugly sides. How actresses were desperate to get roles and how unfortunately many were taken advantage of. It was particularly important to educate us in today’s me too culture. Roman as the killer made perfect sense, I totally believed his motive. The child and brother shunned by his mother and the sister who had all her attention. I also had no issue with him as the sole killer. His knowledge of the industry made it easy for him to duplicate voices, fake his death, and freely moving through the mansion. I was on the edge of my seat! As for Roman in the original? Absolutely! There is no way Billy or Stu could have been watching behind the tree then at the video store that quickly. I know a lot of people think Roman takes away from Billy and Stus credit, but if we remember, Roman did say to Sid your boyfriend didn’t like seeing his dad in his films, indicating they collaborated together, Roman also said getting someone to take the fall, referring to Stu. So Billy and Roman obviously planned this together and the original plan was to have Stu take the wrap. To me, 3 was the best. Unfortunately with 4 and now 5, it kinda is silly now with the references of the concluding chapter. 😂

It wouldn't make ANY sense for Roman to be in Woodsboro during the events of Scream. He went to Woodsboro BEFORE Maureen died. He provided the motivation for Billy to kill Maureen. It would make most sense that he'd leave Woodsboro at that point so he couldn't be connected to Maureen's death. Also, he had NO IDEA that Billy & Stu would start murdering a year later. So why would he just happen to be in Woodsboro when they start their killing spree? It also makes zero sense that he would wear the Ghostface costume because, again, he had no idea they were doing this. And, again, he wouldn't want to be connected to the murders at all. Nah, Roman definitely isn't in the first Scream movie. This video is reaching and grasping for straws. I feel like you put wayyyy more thought into all this than the filmmakers even did. When they made the first Scream, Roman was not a character they had even conceived yet. Hell, even when Kevin Williamson was initially planning the third movie (before he dropped out), Roman still wasn't even a character. He wasn't even the original killer for Scream 3 (early drafts had it be a cult of Stab movie fanatics, as well as Stu Macher executing murder plans from prison). They thought of the character Roman pretty much on the fly and attempted to make it a twist ending, but it backfired because it was so random and out of left field. Even watching the movie, Roman is barely even there until the very end. It's pretty obvious they incorporated Roman super late in the game. So while it may be fun to go back to the first Scream and try to "look" for Roman, any potential "sighting" is entirely coincidental and circumstantial... you're just projecting your desire to make Scream 3 work better than it does and tricking yourself into thinking you're seeing Roman. He's not there. He didn't exist! The filmmakers literally could not have left an easter egg in a movie for a plot twist they didn't think of until years later.
I like Scream 3 for nostalgic purposes (I loved it when it first came out but I was also 10 years old lol), but let's face it- the movie is a hot freakin' mess. Roman is easily one of the worst killers. And the Roman/half brother/serial killer mastermind BS has so many plot holes. And the plot holes aren't resolved even *if* it was Roman stalking Sidney outside of Tatum's house and at the grocery store in the first movie. In fact, the plot holes get even worse! Lol
Plus, Roman isn't even mentioned in Scream 4, which I think is a sign the filmmakers knew they dropped the ball with Scream 3 and wanted people to forget about it. In Scream 4, when Jill and Charlie are revealed as the killers, they talk about how iconic Billy and Stu are, but there's NO mention of Roman at all. He's deliberately not mentioned.

for me this is one of the most interesting and plausible theories of the franchise, for me Roman in the first Scream is not just the Ghostface who chases Sidney and Tatum during the walk because Billy and Stu were video stores and because in the supermarket there was the word Romantica , he is also the Ghostface who stabs Billy and chases Sidney into Stu's house, because in the party scene he wanted to lend a hand to Billy and Stu, in the scene where Billy is in the bedroom on the floor after the stabbings, Roman and Stu they went into action, except that Stu is only the Ghostface behind Randy who is seen in the cameras, for the rest Roman did everything, and just before the scene between Randy and Stu who tell Sidney who the killer between the two was, he he ran away hiding his costume so as not to be noticed and never came back, he only did it to lend a hand, then for me in the initial scene of Casey and Steve's death, there are three klillers, Roman was the one who talked to Casey on the phone, Steve was getting stabbed by both Stu and Billy in order to be completely dismembered in that short time because otherwise it wouldn't be explained, while Casey was killed by Roman

If I wanted to see Stu again, I would watch part 1 again. I am excited to see where the franchise goes from here. An old character I could see returning is Joel from part 2, but only if the motivation was right and tied into the actual plot of the movie. If he were shoehorned in for nostalgia reasons it would ruin it. I would also like to see both Dewey and Hicks bite the bullet in this one. Have 3 of the new characters survive and let Sidney ride off into the sunset or something.

this is the way i see it. i personally love that the original trilogy killers were all connected to the one incident. i think any of type of killer would have been weird even the original scream 3 script. the first one: maureen "broke" up the marriage. second: sidney killed "billy." third one: maureen left behind her child. i explained them kinda bad but you get the point. they are all connected in some way. i think to totally have a different motive/killer would have ruined it. the 4th one is great bc its a comment on the remakes happening in the 2000 and 2010s. so in that respect it didnt need to be tied to maureen. and the new one i assume is commenting on the new reboots happening like halloween. where you dont need to watch the sequels to know whats happening. i think now was the perfect time (i do think they could have waited for more halloween esque movie reboots to happen but its fine). i think the flow of the movies makes more sense looking at it from this point of view. a horror movie trilogy, a "remake", and a "reboot." and they all are commenting on the horror genre at its time. let me know what you guys think.

It’s a bit of a reach to say Roman is in the random Ghostface scenes in the first movie. If this is the direction it would have been easy to reshoot those scenes but from Roman’s POV. Like a close shot of him in the bushes looking over at Sydney and Tatum on the porch/and in the supermarket. Also nobody from Woodsboro would recognize Roman anyway so he shouldn’t have been all Ghostfaced up. It’s more likely that because 3 told us of his involvement since before the events of 1, that Roman was just thrown into those random scenes. So, if not Roman, what was their intended purpose originally? Deflection from Billy and Stu being killers. No one interacted with GF in those scenes, he may as well have not even been there, at least as far as the characters go. There’s a saying that goes “if you didn’t see them die, then they aren’t dead”, I think the same can be true in reverse, “if other characters didn’t interact in a whodunit, that scene sets up placement of 2 supposed different characters. If killer does some stuff and then it cuts to protagonist and least motive supporting characters, it’s gonna be one of them.”

I think the only person who would have the best answer for this would be Kevin Williamson. I’m pretty sure after writing Scream, he wrote at least an outline or treatment for the 2 & 3 because it was meant to be a trilogy anyway. I know that Aaron Krueger ultimately took over the script for 3, but still, I think if KW meant for there to be a mystery 3rd killer, it would’ve been the same killer for Scream 3 whether or not Roman’s character was the one KW had in mind. I have a feeling that Roman’s character probably didn’t exist in his original idea though.
As far as my personal take, I’ve had this on my mind for years. I’ve gone back and forth with it, sometimes believing it, sometimes not so much. But I think I like not knowing better because it gives me the freedom to believe whatever I want at the time that I’m watching and depending on my mood. Currently, I’m on the side of believing it is him.

You said it yourself we have no idea what time of the day these events take place, and we certainly don't know how close either one of them were or weren't at said times! For me it doesn't make sense why 'Roman' would be there at all, he was to "direct" 'Billy' about 'Maureen' but that was it. I mean unless it was planned all along by 'Roman' and 'Billy' why would 'Roman' come back when he already tracked down 'Maureen' and was turned away and had 'Billy' kill her. He says in part 3 that he told 'Billy' "to get a partner to sell out just in case you get caught" so why come back and be anywhere near the crimes knowing 'Billy' knows all the details about him, plus even if he was there sneaking around without 'Billy/Stu' knowing it's way too risky on his part. Still.... it's a very cool and interesting idea though and a definite mind boggler! Oh and did you notice the name of the food in the coolers in the store scene? It was called 'ROMANTICA'! Very eerie indeed and quite the Easter egg!

I usually skip Scream 3 myself it's so bad. Why anybody makes up these theories he's in Scream 1 is beyond me it doesn't even make sense why would he disguise himself as the killer and stalk Tatum and Sidney.. The one at Tatum’s house made sense but the one at the grocery store always bugged me because at that point it was all over the news what he looked like, so I doubt he’d be able to noticeably stalk two girls in a clearly busy market with no one batting an eye lol.

I definitely think that was Roman, I still think Roman had some type of influence on his cousin Jill. Wish there was more info involving Roman and Jill. If Maureen slammed the door in his face, whose to say he didn't visit his Aunt.

  • @lewistyler462
    @lewistyler462 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I've never had a problem with the Roman Bridger connection to the killing of Maureen Prescott and I don't think it really takes away from Billy or Stu, because they were far scarier than Roman imo, even if he did manipulate them etc. I also like the whole Hollywood backstory with Maureen and how it wrapped everything up, and it was probably the logical next step, to actually be on the set of a Stab Movie.
As far as Roman appearing in the first one, I personally don't think so. It could be anyone in the costume, but is probably there for comedy. I like how the franchise was never afraid to be a bit goofy, just look at Scream 3.

  • @harmoniousdesign7785

Being realistic, Roman probability had nothing to do with Scream 1. His character probably wasn’t even thought of until after Scream 2.
Movies are notorious for going back weaving story lines together. Even though “Stu & Billy” were the killers in Scream 1, other ppl dressed & acted as Ghostface..

    • @Joker_JAK

He definitely wasn't since he wasn't even a Kevin Williamson creation. Ehren Kruger created the character for Scream 3. The original story for Scream 3 had Stu returning as the mastermind.

I've just noticed that first three Scream movie killers are all connected and they committed their murders because of Sidney's mother (Maureen Prescott) actions. Billy Loomis killed due to Sidney's mother affair with his dad, that caused his parents to get a divorce. Billy's mother killed due to Sidney's mother affair with her husband, which ultimately led to her son killing and getting killed eventually. Roman Bridger killed because he's the result of Sidney's mother having an affair with John Milton, who happened to be his dad. Which caused Sidney's mother to abandon him as a child.

People don't mention enough how Roman was directing Stab, to torment Sydney and keep the legacy of her mother's death alive...scream 3 was wild, like her being haunted by the ghost of her mom...was that in her head or was that Roman. Scream 4 killed the original spark of creativity this franchise had by bringing in a bunch of lame unnecessary new characters and taking away from diving deeper into the lore...I'm suppose to believe a scrawny 90 pound boy and Julia Robert's little niece killed grown men, give me a break. Kirby was an awful character and ppl hype her up just cause compared to everyone else's awful acting she looks Oscar worthy. don't @ me I don't know why I'm even commenting

The visions/audio hallucinations of her mother at the cabin couldn't be Roman, since the entire point of the plot was to draw her out of hiding. Either way, it was by far the worst part of the movie and I'd love a version of it that completely cuts out 'Ghost Mom'.

I think they were pranksters. Ghostface is Billy’s and Stu’s brainchild. Roman lead Billy to killing, but he just showed him a video, and gave a few pointers, or manipulate Billy towards revenge. Roman says himself “I didn’t know they would make their own movie”

Great video but it couldn't be Roman. I am sure this has been mentioned but Scream 3 wasn't written by Williamson and the character of Roman wasn't either. Williamson couldn't have put in a character created by someone else in the future. I have also felt that Roman wasn't exactly truthfully either.

I dont think it was Roman. He had no reason to disguise himself as sidney and nobody else in that town knew who he was. More likely this was students joking around like the others at school earlier in the film

  • @DirtyDemon917
    @DirtyDemon917 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It was high school kids dressed up running around. Just like the one in the stall. Just like the one running down the hall past Stu and company. Scream 1 was all about red hearings. It teased Dewey, the sheriff, randy, her dad. It teased that normal people could be the killer alongside showing killers that were actually normal people. It throws us completely off guessing who is the real killer.
And yes Roman was a cop out plot tie up in scream 3. If it wasn’t the fact that it was 21 years ago and only 4 after the original that canon would be thrown out. He served nothing. “I hated my mom. So I told another kid who hated her too to kill her.” That is completely unnecessary. It DOES take away from Billy. Billy was way more psychotic, damaged, and believable. Roman is just some nerd that popped up at the end of 3 and said “hi I’m your brother. I hate you. So I planned everything.” Sidney kills him too and we’re good for 11 years.
If Sidney doesn’t know what he looks like or that he exists why would Roman be running around in the outfit in broad daylight? Impersonators were shown to show how the slasher style murders can make everyone desensitized and crazier than normal due to having seen so many horror movies.

Why would he have to wear the mask and suit. No one knew who he was. The supermarket and woods were just people joking around. Like the kids in school and the bathroom scene.
