STU WAS THE CRAZIEST GHOSTFACE?! | FULL KILLER ANAYLSIS | SCREAM (1996)

  • Continuing my analysis of the Scream serial killers, I decided to do Stu Macher next. Interestingly, Stu is a character that had little motive for killing. Making him the hardest, yet most interesting killer to analyse in the Scream universe. Still, after my assessment I've found some categories he can be linked to.

    The movie made it pretty clear that Stu had no idea of Billy's real motive behind the murders. His loyalty to Billy seems to be the result of a kind of affection and validation he found from Billy which he was lacking from his parents.

    Billy Loomis was a mission oriented killer. He had an exact motive and goal in mind. He was seeking revenge. Stu was the thrill killer. He did it to get his kicks. It wasn't until things went awry and he was asked by Sydney about what he was going to tell the police. The peer pressure line was an obvious lie he was going to try to use to absolve himself of guilt. Stu did it for jollies, Billy had a goal in mind.

      I agree, but only to an extent. I think the line is mostly meant as a joke, but it is also accurate for Stu’a character, I think. I mean, what other explanation do we really have for why he’s murdering people since he has no clear motive and none is ever provided? Personally, I’ve always thought the “peer pressure” line was meant to sort of illustrate BOTH that Stu mostly went along with this because of Billy’s influence and that Stu is ultimately just a scared little weasel who wants to play the victim to avoid consequences for his actions. I also think he’s more psychotic than many people-including the Beyond the Mask guy-seem to think, because I think he really did get caught up in the thrill of savagely murdering people with no thought whatsoever for the humanity or his victims or the real-world consequences of his actions, leading him to basically fall apart at the end when he realized things weren’t going to end the way he’d always fantasized they would (i.e. he wouldn’t have to endure much pain, their plan would go absolutely perfectly with no mishaps, and he would never be in any danger whatsoever of facing any consequences). Ultimately, Stu is just a coward who met the exactly wrong person at the worst time to turn him into a psychotic killer.

    In the video store scene, Randy was talking about dumb motives to killing your gf. Stu was intrigued by what Randy had to say on the subject. Then his girl was killed at the party. Probably by Billy, and I'm guessing Stu was suppose to kill Sidney in return. Cause the whole scene where Billy fakes getting stabbed. Problems arised in their plan, so Billy had to pretend he was still alive, barely able to help. Also, in the beginning, Stu and the group were talking to each other and Stu talks about gutting, in a way that seems like he is driving enjoyment out of the topic. He also talks about how it takes a man to do murder, so the killer has to be a man. Low key I feel like he was bragging about how "manly" he is. Which begs the point, why would he feel the need to prove himself as a man? And why does he feel murder is the way to do it? I feel like his ex made him feel like less of a man. For leaving him for a Jock. I don't think he cared about being dumped, but more along the lines of who he was dumped for. I also feel, when he says "peer pressure" there is truth in his joke. Its not so much Billy forcing him to kill, it's more the people around him, forced him to kill. His ex, the jock, his current girlfriend that wouldn't let him touch her without telling him to chill, the parents that never seem to be around on screen. Even billy's dad showed up. And his mother for revenge on part 2. Stu seemed like the charismatic loner, he was able to be the life of the party but couldn't find someone to be there as he was himself. Not even Billy was there for him when he was bleeding out. I don't think Stu was loyal, I believe he was desperate for a true bond. Sadly, he thought he had that with his friend Billy. But Billy only had one thing in mind. Even when he comes after Sid, just before the tv to the head. He says, "I always had a thing for you Sid". We know Billy got with Sid to be closer to his enemy. But knowing this, it must mean Stu want to be close to Sid. Not because of revenge but because he saw Sid as an ideal girlfriend. Of course he had to let Billy get with her do to his situation. But even so, he feels that Sid should know this before he kills her, which ended up being his downfall.

I was gonna watch Billy next and try to get a handle on him too. But the guy on this channel did it already. I say he is 100% accurate on Billy. Especially during the scene when Billy and Stu were stabbing each other. You can see how Billy demands the upper hand. And gets some kind of enjoyment from his partner's suffering. People like to blame Stu for the whole plan going backwards. But I feel it's a combination of both Stu and Billy. Billy getting too knife happy with Stu put Stu into a weak state and Stu leaving Sid unattended was an obvious mess up. Most likely caused by Stu's need for a bond with Billy. Which is also why Stu suggested him and Billy "Make a sequel".

      I caught onto that last line he said to Sidney. Also like you, I was NEVER sold on the “peer pressure” line. But, that line speaks to how quick witted and intellectually astute Stu REALLY Is. He ain’t some goofy henchman to Billy Loomis, like many tend to think.
      Although he wasn’t the mastermind behind the death of Maureen Prescott, it could be argued that nearly EVERYONE ELSE killed with the notable exception of Neil Prescott (He was needed for a patsy) and arguably Gale Weathers and Kenny (wrong place, wrong time) was someone that Stu HIMSELF wanted dead_ just look at the list of actual & potential victims (Randy) that were targeted in the first SCREAM. All of em’ are somebody that Stu could have wanted dead, whereas, Billy was just gunning for the BIG PRIZE: SIDNEY!!! …That was Billy’s downfall, as Sidney Prescott has gone on to become one of the SCREAM SERIES most prolific serial killers.

    I think the fact that Billy and Stu chose Casey and Steve for their next victims says a lot about their arrangement. They could've chosen anyone to start their anniversary killing spree with, and they just happen to pick Stu's ex and the guy she dumped him for? The only connection to Sid is that Casey sits next to her in class. Well, Sid has 6 classes and 2 sides, so there's like 11 other people they could've gone with.
    Billy showed up at Sid's before they kidnapped her dad, but after they killed Casey and Steve. If Sid had caved in and had sex with Billy that night maybe they would've cancelled the rest of the plan since both of them had already gotten what they wanted. Casey and Steve were killed a few days before Maureen's anniversary, so the two probably wouldn't have been connected if they'd stopped right there.

  • @dylanburke8303

    I don't believe Stus reason for killing because he agreed with Billy's revenge plot.. I say this because when Billy revealed his motive for killing Maureen (affair with his dad) Stu looked genuinely shocked to hear this as if he hadn't heard it before

  • @JohnSmith-ks3qk
    @JohnSmith-ks3qk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Stu's character is deliberately vague and the lack of motive is intentional. I think the idea behind Stu is that sometimes not having a motive and killing for killing sake is the most scariest of reasons. Billy got pleasure from the killings and also was seeking revenge. We can conceptualise this and empathise with him. Whereas we just can't understand why Stu went along with the acts. Making him the most terrifying. Also the quote "peer pressure" this is ment ironically and isn't a genuine answer. If you focus on his facial expressions he is confused and literally is saying the first thing in his mind. He doesn't know why he did it and tries to give any reason. This supports the the idea that he has no motive and doesn't know why he took part.

    • @marionhope7506
      @marionhope7506 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You make some good points that I agree with and have also been on record stating: 1. Stuart is vague on purpose. 2. The vagueness is a subtle and well intended facade.
      Now, having said that, here is where I disagree. You stated having the belief that Stu appears clueless (for lack of a better comparison) when he offered Sidney the “peer pressure” line. But I do not buy his retort now that I am older and have watched SCREAM to death along the lines that, this particular line speaks to how clever Stuart REALLY is. Let us not forget, that it was ADMITTEDLY Stu’s idea to kidnap Neil Prescott and clone his cellphone and in the process kill him and frame him for ALL the murders. But with the exception of Sidney’s dad & arguably Gale Weathers and Kenny (wrong place, wrong time) EVERYONE ELSE is someone that Stu wanted dead. Billy Loomis seems to have ONLY had eyes for Sidney!! …Which, invariably costed him his entire life, since SINDEY PRESCOTT has gone onto becoming the most prolific serial killer in the SCREAM/STAB universe.

      He seems to be an abandoned, spoiled & bored rich kid that may have had DEEP seeded psychological issues that were left unchecked and left to swim around & stew in his head for a while. Of course that is until the plot was given to him by Billy (through Roman Bridger) to act on his dark impulses. From there, a bloodlust was unlocked in Stuart Macher, as evidenced in his killing of BOTH of his ex girlfriends👯‍♀️, covertly finding out what Randy had figured out in the video store, and his subsequent plot to get rid of Randy at his party. Not to mention, it was admittedly Stu’s plan to clone Sidney’s dad’s cellphone and kidnap him to frame the murders on. Lastly, his house was to be the STAGING GROUND for ALL the deaths to take place. Tatum claimed it couldnt be Stu because he was with her the whole night. Also, (Took me after the 20th time, to realize it) you can actually tell who's in the costume at any given time. Billy moves methodically, with purpose and is goal oriented. Whereas with Stu, when he's in the costume, he's almost clumsy, as though he's winging it, or making it up as he goes along.
      Two big scenes to contrast the two, are Billy in the Casey scene and Stu in the Tatum scene. Wheb you see what Im referring to, it almost seems obvious who is in the costume. Like Billy with the principal and Stu sneaking around the conveinence store.

    Dude, Stu was obviously a thrill killer. The way he speaks bout gutting someone and his overall personality tells you all you need to know. I think he was seeking atention, then Billy, the one who gave him the atention, convinced him, maybe even presured him, to help him kill Sidney's mom and he liked it. Billy is a mission oriented killer, why would he want to kill Sidney particullary if not?, though he also enjoys it.

    oh, no, stu is obviously the thrill killer of the two. look at how he is repeatedly shown to have a particular interest in desecration of the bodies, both with casey and with the camera man. there is nothing efficient about it. also, I think it's important to note a sexual aspect in his motivation: two of his victims (if you count tatum as his kill, which I do) are women he dated, both blonde and sexually attractive. he is also noted to be fascinated with lee curtis for the same reason ("of course she's a scream queen, with that pair of lungs" [breasts]). he is there to have fun. he is there to put the liver in the mail box. if anything, billy was simply using his influence over an already violent individual for his purposes

These days I’d go as far to say that the death of Maureen Prescott was given to him and Billy, but EVERYTHING ELSE (save for killing Sidney) could have EASILY been Stu going off the rails with his desire to get rid of some particular people. ONLY Sidney’s dad (& arguably Gale Weathers & poor Kenny, RIP) was collateral and admittedly chosen by Stuart to be the fall-guy for ALL the victims he had planned to get rid of at his house in one blood soaked killing spree! 🏠

    Obviously I disagree with the assessment. You're being too clinical and some would say too analytical. We can agree he was vague. Nonetheless, being Stu had ✌2 girlfriends killed in one movie, took joy in killing principal Hembrey, slashed Kenny's throat and thought about killing Randy, and stabbed Dewey it's clear that Stu was motivated by something but he was also getting a thrill out of it by making jokes throughout the movie. Therefore he was doing it for to feel something and joke about. He thought it was a game.

    I definitely can agree that Stu Macher fits in multiple categories, thrill killer and loyalty seem most likely. I don't see him as a mission killer.
    Stu was not the "mastermind" of the original killing but he more than likely was not that "peer pressured" into helping Billy either. He seemed to be a neglected rich kid who idolized Billy in a way and wanted his approval, but he also was clearly someone who was not above revenge killing for his own gains. As others have mentioned 3 of the ppl killed were directly related to Stu Macher and his romantic relationships and that could not have been by accident.
    Everyone else was just collateral damage with the exception of Randy and Sid. Sid for obvious reasons and Randy because he had already ID'd both Stu and Billy as the killers at seperate points both jokingly and seriously, before we even got to the climax.

    You can recontextualize this entire film to make Stu a master manipulator that exploited Billy's narcissism and underlying sadistic urges.
    Stu's parents are missing the entire movie leaving plenty of time for extracurricular studies. His ex is the first victim showing he had the idea and the premeditation and he also kills his current girlfriend, Tatum. You could assume most of the kills are Stu due to the voice on the phone being far enough away to shout, never grunts, as well as how suave the caller is throughout. Billy is the talker, that should be obvious.
    Stu is also emotionally explotative when he says things like his parents being mad (he's genuinely worried about them hating him but also hoping it stirs something in Sid), when they taunt Randy in the video store he's watching Billy's reaction (getting genuine enjoyment out of pleasing his friend while reliving his work moreso than making Randy uncomfortable), and he even tries to appeal to the daughter of his victim, and soon to be victim, the logic of why they killed her mother. (Seeking validation)
    When people say they take his line "peer pressure" as motive, i find that laughable. He duped you into believing that crock of shit. He showed initiative, forethought, and enthusiasm. There's zero chance he was convinced by his greaser pal to go on a killing spree without having thought about it prior to the conversation.
    All that being said, Stu ain't coming back.

    • @thepubknight6144
      @thepubknight6144 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've said Stu actually was the mastermind, we assume he is because billy "seems" in charge, that seems like a ploy by Stu, serial killers aren't the typical "loner"
      Stu was the "life of the party" every male serial killer was described as very social , as Stu was, Billy was the loner, the Emo kid , I believe Stu took advantage of that fact billy was pissed at Maureen for breaking up the family and was manipulating him from the start
      Look at the how Stu is hoovering over Billy that showed me Stu was in charge...like he's emasculating him as a taunt to Sidney..
      Billy is the unhinged unstable serial killer, the quick slasher... Stu also comes off as a sadomasochistic who gets off on getting physically hurt (their stabbing scene) and get off on physically harming people, Billy wants to see his victims die painfully but ,Stu gets a high off it ...
      Stu holds both hands on the knife like he's getting a high off it
      Billy kills with rage and malice he raises one hand plus he chokes his victims
      Stu is the one who cuts them open (he even subtly shows this when he describes how Casey was cut open) while he's smiling , Billy isn't smiling if he was the thrill seeking killer Billy would be smiling, this is shown when they're revealed, Stu is smiling with glee while Billy is Stone faced, cold and still a loner
      Now Stu's shocked look was in my opinion him being like "Wtf you're telling her the plan we're fucked"
      Even Wes Craven stated Stu was just as much apart of the plans as Billy and was trying to use the "sympathy" act cause he had a "thing" for Sidney

  • @razzprince2877
    @razzprince2877 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I always got the sense that Billy and Stu didn't mean to become seriel killers to begin with. They probably killed Sidneys mother thinking it would be enough for Billy but as time went on, Billy's rage never went away and Stus bloodlust got stronger so both of them probably got together and enjoyed talking about the killing so much, they decide a year later to do if again and I think Stu was the one to convince Billy in this scenario since it was his Ex GF they kill.
    The reason for their love for movies is I genuinely believe that since killing Maureen Prescott, they started watching horror movies together just as a thrill since it reminded them of the killing and that's how they got their ideas.

    We use to see guys like that growing up. A guy had some loyalty towards a guy in a group of guys that even made others question his sexuality. Stu was that joker people liked but he didn't have his own persona. He had this obsession with Billy. Billy orders him at least two to three times throughout the movie before it's revealed they are killers. Billy takes complete control during the finale where STU himself is even surprised for Billy's actual motive. Stu's face is shocked as Billy tells it. Billy was the strong broody type that never reveals his true emotions. Hence Billy calling himself stupid in the scene where he tells Syndey to get over her mother. He was calculating his every move like a Sigma male that is sort of an Alpha male so to speak Stu pretty much worships Billy's every move. In the end, Billy lashes his rage out on Stu even. Stu stabs Billy once. The only times we see Billy show real raw emotions is when he reveals himself as the killer, giving his motive and realizing he made a mistake seducing Syndey t school. Even when she figures out he may have used his one phone call to throw her off, he held his cool prior to Stu entering as Ghostface. the audience only notices his glare at certain points after watching it a second time. I think Stu called anyway at that point. Which again shows Stu carrying everything out for Billy. Stu looked up to Billy so much he even says to Syndey I always had a "thang" for ya. Which is an undertone way of saying since she was Billy's obsession he never could try lol. But we all have a thing for Syndey lol. She better not be killed in part 5!
