I get asked all the time what Ford diesel is the best to buy? So I have made a video that gives an overview of what to expect from each of these trucks.

+Anthony O'Dell I agree with you 100%. I've been watching him for hints, tips and advise for a few years. I've been a mechanic in a Govt garage for 14 yrs and we use very few diesel Fords because the fuel economy isn't enough to justify the expense of the diesel upgrade, nor even the much more expensive maint and upkeep. I myself bought a new F350 in February and went with a Gas engine. It's not too slouchy with a 11000# fifth wheel.

absolutely Anthony. im glad someone finally said the right thing for this man. i have been through hell with mechanics in this town. most are blowing smoke and making more of the problem to soak you more and never finish up the job with any class or with the intention of doing the best for you and your vehicle. scam artists in a legalized ripoff . very few honest men in the repair industry or sales.

7.3 99-03 is hands down the best Powerstroke. Can't kill them, easy to maintain, relatively cheaper parts now (except IDI). I got rid of all the other diesels from our ambulance fleet and only run the 7.3's and the 6.8 gas engines. Also those older bodies sure hold up far better too.

Those 444s had weak bottom end power for such a big engine, no low end torque and were hard starting in the cold ,if everything was 100 percent they might fire at 10 degrees they might not that is after cycling glow plugs and waiting, you can hop in a DT466s and instantly turn the key and it jumps to life in 2 revolutions in the same temps...

That range 7.3 engine is awesome but the transmission is the worst ford made for diesels until rebuilt with the upgraded steel parts (if you upgrade it before it fails you might save the increasingly hard to source casing.) But I agree 7.3 is longest life diesel Ford ever made (probably because they realized that they weren't breaking and people wouldn't be buying expensive parts or a new truck often enough to keep them rich) thus the 6.0 with it's tiny passage water-to-oil cooler in front of what is essentially a designed-to-fail coolant destroyer (EGR COOLER boils off coolant if left just 1/2 gallon low) [which is *intentionally or not" designed into it by the coolant flow path through the easily restricted oil cooler leaving an air bubble in the EGR cooler unless air is bled out properly every time coolant is more than a quart or so below spec]

I have a 96 f250 with a solid axle swap on the front. I got it 20 years ago with less than 10k miles. Been a great truck. About 225k miles on it. Only major issue has been one water pump replacement. But I’ve pretty much stopped driving it because it just beats you to death. Especially after I swapped in the front solid axle.

Here's a small review of the video.
Best truck: 2005 - 2007 6.0l best ride, updated look and engine but needs bulletproofing and could last half a million miles
2011- today 6.7l is best in ride quality and power if you have a deep pocket to fix it
2003-2004 6.0l it's decent if taken care of (bulletproof)
1999-2002 7.3l is a workhorse, will go forever if proper maintenance and transmission, but gets no power
pre 1999 7.3l don't even look at these, they are primitive and are starting to be hard to fix due to wiring problems
2008-2010 6.4l just NO. Even though that's what he owns, he has an entire mechanic shop and decades of experience to maintain it and he is still afraid to have long trips on it.

You’re wrong about pre 1999 7.3s sorry lol they don’t make as much power as a 6.0 stock but with some work I can make more than a 6.0 can reliably and there are several guys that do just that with OBS trucks. Wiring problems? Wrong. The basic platform of the pre 99 7.3 is essentially the same with a few differences like a mechanical fuel pump which can be updated fairly easily

HI Bill, I own a 97 F-250 7.3 Crew cab 4x4 that I bought used in 2000, she had 50000 miles on her. I have done extensive work to her, Banks Power Pak, which included an intercooler, turbo housing and a chip. I added an S&B air intake and I made the 5' exhaust from the down pipe back. With all the mods I'm pushing around 320hp and 680fp torque. I put a Dana 60 up front and a North American Diesel Products bulletproof tranny in her as well after the stock one took a dump on me at 75K. I also lifted her about 8", I rarely take her off-road except for hunting season, I wanted a bit more ground clearance and to be able to put chains on her if needed. At one time I owned a 40 Raptor toy hauler and bought a new 06 6.0L F-350 to haul it around, that was the biggest mistake of my life. At 3300 miles the rear mail seal started leaking, and there would be a 10" puddle under it every morning. Long story short, I took it in 4 times that year for rear main seals and with 12000 miles I traded it off. I started pulling the Raptor with my 97 and to my surprise it pulled better then the 6.0L did. I was looking recently into buying a new 6.7 but the price almost floored me. For the money that I'd spend on a new one, I can do some serious upgrades to my old 97. And besides that I can work on my 97, I can't say the same of the new trucks, and I don't have to pull the cab to get the motor out. Sure she's loud and rides a little rough and it's hard to keep her going in a strait line, but she's a TRUCK, not a passenger car. I wouldn't trade or sell her for anything. I've invested a lot of time and money in her over the years, but as I've said before, she's easy to work on and the parts are cheap.

    • @charlesevans1840
      @charlesevans1840 6 ปีที่แล้ว

i took my 7.3 to ford ant they told me the puddle under it was rear main seals ended up only being hpop o ring i seriously doubt it needed rear main seals. I have a 2000 7.3 with about 150'000 and a 2003 with about 190'000 and though hpop o rings are about the only trouble i have had, i have had to replace them on both trucks once and need to replace one on one today . very inexpensive repairs

Thanx for your help. I have been searching and searching for a reliable Ford diesel for light duty work for my business that will last me a long time. Anybody listening to this... this guy is spot on with the dealerships. I actually went to one dealership and the truck I looked at was a little rough cosmetically but ran really well at an idle. All the fluids looked pretty good, no blow by, no smoke, no leaks. Drive the thing and it would not go above 1200 rpm. I drove almost a hundred miles to look at this thing and they wanted a premium price for it. It was junk. Then they acted like they didn't know, even went as far as to claim they drove the truck to Kentucky towing a boat with it. Yeah right😂 Keep doing what you are doing man. The best Ford diesels to get are the 6.9 and 7.3 IDIs. Don't confuse the 7.3 IDI (1994 and earlier.) with the 7.3 PS (1994.5 and later.) Two totally different animals.
The IDI offers good fuel economy, power (when in tune), run forever, easy and cheap to fix and absolutely zero computer control.

I got a excursion 05 limited , I'm the original owner 6.0 diesel. put new injectors head gaskets api head studs at 162,000 that's when she started to leak coolant so I got that all done . went and got the full egr delete and got rid of all the emissions crap!! straight through exhaust. it's fast and scares me because it's so big and heavy but has a ridiculous amount of acceleration! it lifts up the front end at takeoff it's crazy... with that said I wish I would of kept my 01 f250 7.3 6 speed manual 😭 but I got the excursion and I'm not selling it ever !!!
