    This week in our Tesla DIY Series, we take apart our old Model 3 round steering wheel and try on Tsportline's brand new custom Model 3 and Y yoke steering. There are lots of knock off aftermarket yoke options on the web, we've found Tsportline to be the only one whose shape, grip thickness/ design have been iterated over time to create the most ideal contours for driving. It's die-cast aluminum frame, alloy steel spline, and even its heating elements all use the same materials and specs as Teslas OEM yoke.

    Don’t forget to apply some locktite to the bolt again, so you don’t have the bolt come loose whilst driving. That original yellow stuff is locktite to secure the bolt during assembly.

    I've seen experts strongly recommend fully depowering a car (battery terminal disconnect, wait a minute) before messing with the airbag in any way. Maybe those folks were wrong, and your disconnect on a live car is OK. Hopefully...

    I love how Kim Java makes changing major gear on TESLA Great AGAIN, its always intimidating especially when you checkout Yoke wheels made by many manufacturers ive seen and you are hesitant to buy it because the install looks intimidating and nerve wrecking assuming the Tesla will have errors and you would need to go to Tesla to have them removed and they will tell you sorrry you changed major parts etc, but seeing this video has made me more confident to buy one, I have older model MODEL S P85D and want to get a nice YOLK custom made with alcantara carbon matte sides and seeing this video has made that process doable and possible and I can't thank you enough KIM for making it so easy and cool. Using F and S is part of our human nature, never apologise, thats what makes us feel better when doing something complex the first time haha. Thank you for this amazing video. Can't wait to install one in my S. :). Best, ARi

    Nice video Kim, thanks for sharing. When you mounted the new yoke, it was turned slightly to the right and you closed everything up. My question is, how difficult is it to get the yoke on straight?

    • @ItsKimJava
      @ItsKimJava  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There’s a groove and a notch that only allows it to go on one way. In other words, it’s not like a bike handle that can be put on out of alignment. It was only slightly slanted because the wheel was slightly turned when removed.

    I actually like the TSportline yoke better. I think it has better functionality with the center horn button retained and the faux carbon fiber along the sides was a good idea as it should prevent splits/tearing along the corners. Definitely a great option I'm considering. Thanks Kim!!

    How do you drive with one hand? How do you let the wheel slide through your hand as you are straightening out from a curve? How do you go hand over hand when you are steering lock to lock, like with parallel parking? 99.99% of cars have a wheel and Tesla X and S plaid have a yoke. So the whole rest of the world is wrong. I think many of us are wondering, which steering wheel last longer? We know the OEM one peels prematurely.

      I know this aftermarket one is leather vs Tesla being vegan leather so thinking this’ll do better

    I totally get why people are having a tough time with the Tesla Model S yoke steering. It's like they decided to change everything and it's just not easy to get the hang of. I mean, it would've been so much better if they put the left indicator on the left side of the yoke and the right one on the opposite side, you know, the right side of the steering yoke. And seriously, why didn't they just leave the horn in the middle? It's in such an awkward place now that you always have to search for it before you can hit it. It's just not intuitive at all. I don't know why they had to try and reinvent the wheel or something.

    I hate how the steering wheel in almost every car blocks the gauges behind it. It's such a poor design, but everybody does it. Combine that with the terrible design decision to not have the horn in the center, and I could easily see doing this mod if I had an S or X. I kind of like how your channel features these DIY episodes. I'm not sure I'd do a lot of them, but it's really interesting to watch.

    Yoke wouldnt be that bad with steer by wire system.

      Steer by wire and yoke appear to be the future. Do not understand why people are upset about removing the stalks. Makes more sense to have these functions on the yoke. Believe those individuals raised with game controllers will not miss stalks.

    I wonder why Tesla didn’t just put the horn in the middle on the S/X?🤔

    I installed the yoke on my Model Y a year ago. I love it and found that it took about 5 minutes to get used to it.

      I don't feel like modding my Tesla too much because Tesla's message is that we don't need it. "We" don't need radar, USS, temp sensors, turn stalks, buttons, 400 mile range, spoilers if they are hard to source, motorized door handles, motorized frunk, etc. Or else pretty soon, we will be building ourselves a new car.

    Now tell how I steer with my knee while opening a beer and smoking with that ridiculous shape. They only work when you have steer-by-wire.

      Yeah, I eat a lot between work and home and work to save time. But, hey, there is FSD or autopilot for that, you dummy. Just kidding. That reminds me, I gotta turn those on more often while eating/driving.
