    OMG, Finally good to know at least SOMEONE has considered this type of situation. Many times while charging over the last few years I've wondered what would I do (or anyone for that matter) if some crazy person or persons showed up and I couldn't get away? Or even if a weather related thing, or if I saw a car swerving back and forth in the parking lot coming at me? It's been a growing concern. Tesla should have thought about this when they built the cars. It really puts us in a horribly vulnerable position because we literally can't get away. And what if you have kids or elderly people in the car? Thank you Kim for letting us know there is a solution!

  • @Lovejazz01
    @Lovejazz01 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Zac and Jesse from Now You Know have been promoting this situational need and eventual product for a while now, and I’ve always said, in certain areas, especially in this crazy world, you might have a safety situation in any area , even what is considered a “ nice “ area, and you have to be able to get out of there quickly. I’m glad to see someone else taking about it and hope that it spreads to others worldwide. You never know that you might run into something crazy that has four legs or two legs, and just sitting in your EV might not be protection enough..

    I was toying around with the idea of putting a few CO2 cannisters, or possibly even a gun powder ball, and adding some kind of internal channel in the charge port to allow it to physically eject the cable in an emergency, but this seems like a much better idea!! Also yea, people absolutely do come to solicit donations from supercharger users. I'm not saying I'd like to have this product for that situation par say, but there are myriad reasons to have this device. I'm absolutely buying one. Excellent video Kim Java, I've subscribed.

    I was actually driving from WA-> CA -> TX during my military transfer to my next duty station and had been driving a lot.... one of my last stops before getting to my city was Midland TX before getting to my final destination and I didn't have enough charge. So I stopped by the supercharger in Midland TX near an extended stay hotel.... the stalls make you back in, facing the parking lot. It just so happened I was facing the lot and a car pulled to a parking spot with someone in the back seat clearly wigging out on some kind drug, two people got out of the car on their phones yelling about not getting money for drugs, then... a second car showed up next to them and a person ran into the hotel full sprint... at this point I simply couldn't make it anywhere with the first 8 mins at the charger hooked up... so I walked into the nearby gas station and on my way in, someone sitting outsdie asked me for cash. I didn't have any on me, just my cards, and I was going for an energy drink in case I needed to bolt out of their to make it to my house I had just purchased while overseas... and get outa there. As I left the gas station, the guy asked me again asking if I had change and I said no, as he mumbled "there's a fu*king ATM in there you and drive a gwd damn tesla." I didn't respond at all to that comment and walked fast back to my car and noticed my estimator said I'd make it to my home with 4% battery left...and if you know any long distance drive, that % on arrival can go 0-12% below or above the estimator calculation based on driving conditons along the way. I made it to my new home (with no keys, since a power of attorney signed my paperwork for me), and I slept in my driveway for about 4 hours until my coworker woke up and met me at my house to give me my keys. This adapter would have allowed me to at least charge a bit longer and should I need to of escaped for an emergency, or perhaps these guys had guns on them. I'd of disconnected and bolted to a safer location at least.

      @@Av-vd3wk not a story but real life occurrence when I had just bought my model 3. I only had a TX temp 30 day sticker because WA… believe it or not. Has like $30.00 with dealership for a “2 day temp tag” Who offers 2 day tags ???? Texas was like $15-$16 for 30 days. And tx DMV actually mailed my temp tag back to WA so I could drive to my new home state with it. This was just an even more wrench in the trip.

    I was approached by two panhandlers at a supercharger in Madison, WI when I was there at night. My solution to that is to minimize having to supercharge at night, at least in major cities. And if I have to, try to at least go to a nearby business to avoid being approached in the first place.
    Haven't had an issue like this since, but I also try to avoid driving long distances at night on road trips since that's kind of boring due to not being able to see much aside from what's immediately in front of you.
    I honestly hope this is a "solution searching for a problem" thing. But as more EV's show up on the roads, and more DC fast chargers get installed, I could see this stuff happening, where they may have to have something along these lines in an emergency.
    Also, it'd be more useful if the part that's attached to the car was reusable, and you could order a replacement part instead of having to get an entirely new unit each time.

    One detail you might have emphasized with the "Summon during a fire" scenario. Unless I am mistaken, the car should not move under Summon until actual charging current has been stopped by the control software. So to say it can be summoned 'while charging' is perhaps a bit inaccurately stated .

    I really like this idea and the product but I'm concerned people might misuse it. For instance, if you're at a busy supercharger and your car is done charging, people can potentially avoid idle fees by using evject and unlocking their charge port - the charger will think you've unplugged and wont charge you for it.

      Yes, but it's good that half of it stays attached to the Supercharger plug because it can act as extra impact protection when it hits the ground.

    And regarding the 2 individuals that had an argument… both had side arms. And the victim was the one that instigated and threatened the suspect and suspect engaged with his side arm. That’s what the latest police report stated. Didn’t provide anymore details. Perhaps because it’s still on going investigation.
    So sad. We are tesla family. If some jerk really wants to use the wand, that’s ok. Go ahead. It’s not the end of the world. Just move along to another location if you can or just wait. Eventually someone will finish.

    Huh. Never heard of this "safety" Tesla-to-Tesla adapter, Kim. I guess if needed… it'd be needed! I'm still unsure what the screen would display if you put it in drive: no more "charging cable" warning? The adapter disables that? Or is it that the "unlock charge port" button disables it? I wonder if another solution would be to simply call 911 with your phone and wait for the police to arrive…? At least they could then detain, maybe even arrest, the suspect. Also, if that person also had a car, even if you break away from the Supercharger, what if he were to then follow you…!?! 😨

    Hello, Kim. Thank you for all these type of practical videos. This is great info to know. This “connection issue” also happens in an analogy with ICE vehicles having the fuel nozzle still in the port when some people unfortunately forget and drive off. Different but similar😅. On a different note, it’s good you kept filming while that safety situation with that individual and others were filmed in action. The other one circling around your vehicle is another dangerous issue. Hence, the 2nd Amendment and Tasers are a must also when no Law Enforcement is readily available. Please stay safe out there. You are very popular and a very great presenter and reviewer, and too many shameful attacks on Tesla vehicles and owners are happening. It happens in other applications with other automakers too sadly. It is very unfortunate and shameful to see such behavior in action against wonderful individuals such as yourself and your crew/family filming you. Now there is proof, similar to what Tesla’s Sentry System appears to mimic and personify. Good job! Expose them! I was making a video recently myself and had to quickly leave what initially appeared as a pretty safe situation until I noticed strange individuals walking around the area akin to a possible drug buying/substance swapping situation. I will reserve judgement still. And you did the right thing in lock your doors and keep filming him while getting ready to make an escape. It’s just bad again that you were still plugged in😮. Thankfully he moved off. It appears to Carjackings and other dangerous assaults are sadly now on the rise everywhere, but especially in metro areas. This recent upload actually will lead right into what I will kindly and humbly ask you to comment on next or possibly help me in doing a review on. I got faith in you.
    I watch your vids a lot, and they shows some amazing safety features and versatility I wish were trickled down to ALL automakers. With the limitations, it hopefully with get that particular manufacturers’ attention. However, I have lots of unanswered questions about BEVS and PHEVs vs ICE, and the practicality and safety concerns regarding Autopilot in a world where we appear so distracted already. Even though this video does not necessarily focus in on that particular interest, you have touched the subject before, and you are more than qualified to delve into the subject. Yes, “Driver Assistance” aides we need to assist us in being safer, more efficient, and more aware. But I beg to differ on many of their practical applications. It is almost as if we are being sold BEVs as the next thing since water. What of Hydrogen Fuel Cells and other Bio-fuel technologies we have been hearing about? I like how Toyota and Mazda and BMW and others I am sure of have chosen not to put “all their eggs in one basket” in such a dynamic market. Thank you for making such informative videos. We need more real world comparisons between all these type of technologies. I’m advocating for a fun [filmed] competition between ICE vs BEV vs PHEV vs Hydrogen Fuel Cells and other alternative fuel sources to do [cross-country] destination runs across the continental US and in all countries where they appear to be trying to bury ICE vehicles. I am actually becoming convinced that we will be very surprised. ELON inspires me just as Nikola Tesla does. We should not forget the past and our history if we ever wish to move forward. Range anxieties and practicality are a must! I would so appreciate a sit down interview with ELON and a round table of automaker visionaries and benefactors! They all have their applications, so why not let them demonstrate their practicalities in a healthy and fun competition? Thanks again for all that you do and have done.

    Looks useful in sketchy situations if you are sitting in the car. However, for day in and day out usage when you walk away from your car, it’s a target for vandals. People already try to unplug Teslas that are charging but now they can break your EZ-ject unit instead.

    • @Av-vd3wk
      @Av-vd3wk ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But that’s worth it actually. People will stomp on the hanging cable and it will completely destroy your inner charge port. With this thing, just the much less expensive adapter gets destroyed.

    But how does it trick the car into thinking there is no plug still attached so it allows to shift out of Park? Don't have to press something on the phone to cause adapter to open the circuit to trick the car first? J1772 similar device being developed? Plz!

    • @TechSavvyOppa
      @TechSavvyOppa ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looking at the use case, it looks like there is a sensor or a switch where the locking tab receiver is on the evjack. So when you unlock the charge port, when the mechanical pin is removed from the adapter, the adpater probably cuts power flow, which the car then interprets as meaning the charger is not plugged in. That also explains the manual button you have to press to start charging.

      @@ItsKimJava I saw that - how long did you charge? How high was the charge rate?
      If you only plugged in for a few minutes, and the car was not at a fairly low state of charge when you did, the charge current and duration would not have been anywhere near the maximum a user might subject the device to. This is a potential safety issue. It would be a great service to your viewers if you would try to stress test the connector, and see just how hot it gets if you arrive with a conditioned battery at a low state for charge, and let it rip until the current starts to taper off.

If so activated, it should be designed so that it overrides the no driving while charging safety interlock. Someone should suggest to Elon to add this feature. I would except I deleted my Twitter account. Ironically although I’m super-impressed with what Elon has done with Tesla I’m equally impressed but in a negative way with his Twitter adventures.
