I used to be extremelly chilled out and nice to people, then shit happened... repeatedly, I had my failures and weaknesses used against me. Now I'm in a state of anxiety and people generally irritate me.

Read literally any chapter in the book “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius....I read it after I was dropped from Selection and was heartbroken/lost and the stoic philosophy there was exactly what I needed. Instantly changed my outlook on life and all my problems/inner bitterness

Yes! It's like when you're nice people hate you for being nice! I find being neutral but kind works. I think people take less advantage when you act neutral instead of just liking or helping them.

I rub people the wrong way all the time, I have been told I am a very abrasive person. I saw recently how this cost me a job that I knew I was the right fit for after having a good interview. I am now trying to learn any way I can to not be so abrasive and you guys talking about being insecure definitely hit the nail on the head. Going forward I am going to try really hard to talk as well as listen to others. I also want to start not being so black and white and straight to the point because those are also abrasive traits.

This is solid gold here. Just found your videos & an digging the hell out of them
When I worked as a mechanic, I learned to quit worrying about telling a customer I didn't know what was wrong with a car.
I realized that it just meant that I hadn't found the cause(es) of the problem(s) - yet.
I would explain what I'd found, where I wanted to look next (and why), and that even though I might have a pretty good idea, didn't *know* what was gonna' shake out on a proper, through investigation.
This was almost always universally respected by customers, as it had integrity.
I've seen guys "guess and go" @ diagnosis; they probably wanted to give the customer a fast answer and look like an expert.
Then, they'd find there was more to the story, and end up having to cover their asses.
When I learned this - really learned this - my life changed

I feel this so hard...i used to work on Porsches and i remember when i was first starting out it always fucked me up when i had to tell them "dont know whats going on with your 911 just yet"...i used to think it reflected that i was an inadequate technician or that they would think i wasnt up for the task. I learned though that the customer will always value integrity and honesty over anything, especially a sloppy shotgun approach

The only real facet of my life where I know for a fact I am truly abrasive is calling out people on their shit when others don't. I have no idea why I feel the the ridiculous urge to instead of keep quiet. The majority of the time whatever the problem is, it doesn't even affect me. But it literally makes me anxious and irritated if I don't say anything.
I've gotten in fist fights, lost a couple friends, and a couple of relationships over it. Not just because of that solely, but a part nonetheless.
I've learned to control it a little bit. But I have a feeling I just am that way.

automatic adversarial thinking has cheated me out of meaningful connections from being stuck too heavily on unseen scenarios, it's unfortunate, and I'm realizing unnecessary for the different situations they always were independent from what I had vowed to protect myself this time around from. The perspective to have fresh eyes for a new opportunity for a new heart's compassion is what I can strive for realizing this.

I'm wondering if I sounded rude to a chef who I felt was being disrespectful to me. The day before, she and my boss had taken me to the latter's office to talk to me about a few mistakes I made. But you know what? I think she could've handled it better. It really wasn't worth a trip to the office, let alone with both women. The chef could've just spoken to me privately for a couple mistakes, someplace else, with respect and tact. I think I deserved that. She was firm, restrictive, and insensitive. She even said to my boss, "Is there anything you want to add?" Way to rub my mistakes in my face, as if I'm a criminal in an interrogation room.
And then the next day, she asked "How are you?" I replied, "With all due respect, please don't patronize me or be passive-aggressive after yesterday." Now I wasn't trying to be rude, but to be fair, her question was ridiculous. What was she thinking? That I was doing well after she treated me the day before? I guess my resentment made me say what I said. I felt disrespected by both her behavior the day prior and her "polite" question to me. I wouldn't lecture someone one day and ask how they are the next; that's rude and patronizing.

I know it's old and all... BUT I've often worked in groups that could SOOOooo easily come across as abrasive and mean... We often meet up in some "usual break area", starting the conversation (among us) with "F*** this, guys, let's just go drinkin'..." AND the obligatory round of chuckles.
This clip brought it up, too. "It's weak to lose your temper and intimidate people, if you use it as a tool." specifically.
That's the thing, though. When one of us realizes the whole crew is starting to get frustrated and stagnate... There's just a sort of "break point"... One of us will let fly a whole fountain of verbal filth, usually bordering on jibberish, and the rest of us will take notice (sooner or later) and start laughing at him... Sometimes we join in, and once in a while, we even get an audience or some outsiders step up to contribute... It blows off a little steam, and we don't let it get too out of hand... just an impromptu break to remind us all NOT to take ourselves too damn seriously, and then get a quick breathing exercise in, before someone else (usually part of the same crew) calls it off, and we turn to and resume whatever we were trying to do with fresh minds and eyes on the matter...
SO... sometimes, when you see a ring of guys guffawing at the one in their focus, while he's jumping up and down, frothing and the mouth, and spewing every god-awful insult and fuming verbal filth you could think of... it's just a comedy routine. It releases the distress and pressure building up from some overtly complicated or just randomly unlucky function that must be tried over and over until "the magic happens"...
We KNOW we look silly when we do this. That's the whole point. Sometimes there just isn't a "better way to do it". Sometimes there's just nothing you can do about "it" either... SO you blow off a little steam, and work off a little laughter. Then you breathe, relax, and resume keeping on. ;o)

Whats so extremely hard for me is that when i became agressive (through hardship and trauma) i did 10x better in life, i just dont have many people in my corner besides my parents. I work hard, my morals are straight, people just dont like me because im an asshole. Im not rude, i just dont bullshit and im blunt. I tell you straight up what is on my mind.
Im in this conflict where i feel like if i stop being aggressive i wont do as good in life... but im so lonely and depressed about while knowing i deserve it. Its fucked up honestly. I dont treat people bad and i bend over backwards for my family and employees and show the outmost respect for those i love. I just speak so fucking aggressively.
The worst part is i know what im doing wrong.

No you don’t become the dominant one Jocko LMAO!!!! YOU BECOME A DICK....A BULLY...the one people will chose not to be around...shake itself out. I like howJocko took the time to listen to different perspective, I also liked how I was able to see him reroute the scenario in his mind to play out what Echo was getting at and see it

Take jocko's advice BUT also make sure you're built like a mack truck OR you're an MMA badass because THEN there's no reason to be scary when you know the chances of being threatened are really low.
I doubt jocko could've developed that insight without being a big physical guy. Scrawny jocko might not sound so wise

He just described my work out partner to a T.
an insecure abrasive meathead who sucks a communication. Also is a drama queen, talks about other dudes when they aren’t in the gym.
He recently insulted my wife and our parenting of our child when he doesn’t have any kids at all. I’m done with this dude. He’s weak.

I'm on the cusp of kicking a young guy out of my shop because I've gone so far out of my way and he just won't grow up and show up on time or get a shit done in his early 20s
I don't like being that guy but I don't know what else to do with this point I've gone way too far out of my own way and people surrounding me or telling me to cut him loose

I am afraid. Im afraid as a LEADER I am going to get people killed. As I am a Father, that is my leadership role, those PEOPLE are my children. Single Dad who did almost everything wrong in life up till 5 years ago. I also died so many times as a direct result, or maybe not, of lack of discipline, lack of rules, lack of self worth, and complete obsession with anything BAD or dark or wrong. Jail. Dual Diagnosis Rehabs. Poverty. Anger. As a result, or maybe not, I am TOO strict. To hard on my boys. It all falls on me and I dont want to make decisions that could lead them to harm. Im terrified they will make the mistakes I made as a result of my poor leadership... That is why I am here girls and boys. Its a long road ahead, alot to learn, and excited to GET AFTER IT!!!! (Just broke my keyboard I typed those last words so hard, Is That Aggressive? lol)

I would rather work for a hard ass fair leader than an emotionally vocal afraid to set task and not get the job done.. people who respect a leader would jump to get the job done. I understand jocko is trying to speak to the emotional masses..
