My past is full of successes, failures, interesting life experiences and things I could spend time lamenting but I choose to look for the lesson and leave it the past. I focus on today...but...what I do today, each day, to work towards a bigger goal in the future. I do not get anxiety about the future because I know the work I'm putting in daily are going to get me where I desire to be. Jocko keeps me focused on what must be done.

Why do I listen to Jocko regularly?
I asked myself this question this morning and initially thought that it was because Jacko refocuses what I do onto the most important things in life, and I can see the results. There are lots of people who do that - so why is it, that Jacko makes a difference? Today I came to the conclusion that Jacko is soooo good at articulating ideas - in such a simple way that resonates easily, is easy to remember and easy to do...... one step at a time.

But there came a point around 8th grade when my natural “gifts” wouldn’t cut it any more, and soon everyone was past me because I didn’t know how to work hard. 100% I was extremely talented in music when I was young. It got me in to college, because my grades really didn't do it. The problem though was I didn't really work hard enough for what I had. It was just 'easy'. Once I hit the real world it started falling apart. If I could go back to my young self and tell me that the talent was a gift but it was only going to get me so far if I didn't challenge myself more I would be in a different place. That's the past though. I recognize it and apply that mentality to what I do now.

    Great work, guys!
Really like the mention of how we (humans) understand things in the scale of our own experiences. Maybe you didn't say it in just so many terms and syllables, but that's how human psychology really works. You can't fathom something beyond the scope of your experience...
SO telling a kid about the adult scale of "the long game" for instance, is impossible. The kid can only conceive of a decade after they've measurably experienced it... AND that's only ten years. Teens can "get" a decade. To someone much younger, it's as useful a smiley face in crayon.
SO no, those weren't exactly mistakes, in early years. They're a form of growing experiences to understand what you're playing at... short game versus long. Until you're starting to expand the mind's capacity to conceive of decades, and then a better chunk of a century (Like "Jeez, I'm really gonna live THAT long?!") you're stuck in the concept of the short game...
AND Jocko's idea of shorter term goals that are tangible and rewards to go with those goals is fantastic. If someone had tried that concept with me, I'd likely have been a better student (I wasn't terrible)... and a more competitively motivated artist today... just by rote.
I got a swat to the side of my head as I picked up and showed off my diploma, and my dad said, "Well, damn, son! It's about time you stopped wasting my money."
    Good times. ;o)

Jocko, sir, you haven't put the "universal blanket of being dumb" on all of us. The flesh world, genetics, and the general human condition has put it upon us. If wisdom didn't come with age, age would be hopeless. Rock on, be good.

Playing the long game is especially true with financial well being, even if you just put a little bit away every year, as long as you start early, you'll be in a much better place than if you wait til you're 30-40 and in the midst of your career. One thing I wish I had done a better job of when I was working through high school and college, even putting $100-200 into a retirement account at that point would have been huge for the future.

One of the reasons the future seems so distant to young people is due to the length of time between now and a given future event when compared to the time the person has been alive. 5 Years to a 50 year old is only a tenth of their life whereas to a 10 year old it's half their life!

A simple question to both of you - Jocko and Echo: What are your cellphone usage habits? Can you make a podcast addressing this particular issue?Just a suggestion. Btw, got no TV subscription and no broadband for years now (kicked the dumb box since adolescence, which is over 30 yrs ago), so I am happy I am good here, but cellphone abuse has been an issue to a certain extent). The book that really set me in that direction was Culture Jam by Kalle Lassen. Never regretted the choice. Thanks for your wisdom and guidance! It's like a rain in the Sahara.
