Alley, you are a very good commentator. You know what you are talking about and describe it very clearly and the steps are covered very well. I have more than one external hard drive and I have followed the steps to type a code in to fix it but it will fix one and the stop. You are probably familiar with. start with command and c held down the add to the message on the screen. fsck space -ft and enter. it repairs your usb external. Take care Dr.Bill

Techinside, when you repair the corrupted files does it delete all your normal files? Do I have to download all my apps again?
Hello. The prompt window saying Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" asked that you restart your computer using the Command and R key. However, you started yours only using the Option key. Can you please explain why you didn't use the Command & R key instead? i want to repair my disk, but my prompt (like yours) is instructing me to hold down the Command & R key. Please advise. BTW, i have a 15-inch, Mid 2010 MacBook Pro Intel Core i7. Thank you!

What if you only have untiled and EFI boot when you re boot and hit options? Which do I choose or do I need to make a recover one?

When holding option on my 2009 imac, I can see the HDD, Recovery Disk & Bootable USB. my recovery console shows a gray "no" symbol instead of going to OS X Utilities.
If I continue to install OS X on the old HDD or a new HDD, The system can't find them.

Hi there, I have been having repeated issues with the "disk cannot be read or written to -36" error code for some time now. I have gone through disk utility and checked permissions, verified disk etc. I am still having the same problem, will this method be of any use to me?
Side note: any diagnostics run through disk utility has come back without any errors etc, with a verified S.M.A.R.T. status. Any suggestions?

My MacBook Pro ran out of battery while updating, and now in the middle of installing the update it says that something is missing or damaged ((Path/System/Installation/Packages/OSinstall.mpkg)) this is it, it says that I should quit the installer to restart my computer BUT I DONT KNOW HOW TO QUIT THE INSTALLER THERE IS NO BUTTON TO DO THAT

For Mac booting up but gets stuck in the middle of bar on booting screen then shuts off and restarts mac:
There could be a few things going on during this because I had the same issue, I'll list the issues to check in order from more likely to least likely but still likely:
1.) Could just need a disk repair, you can do a disk repair going into Recovery (Command + R) > Utilities > Disk utility > Boot volume or partition > Repair disk.
2.) Could be the battery having issues, Try hooking your laptop up to AC adapter and reboot and see if that works.
3.) Could be the harddrive having issues, Most likely from wear and tear or laptop being dropped multiple times. Try getting a new harddrive and upload the OS onto it via internet in recovery mode.
4.) Could be the heat in the laptop itself due to dust and old thermal paste on cpu. Clean out the inside removing dust, clean fans, clean vents, clean motherboard carefully, clean heat sink (it's behind the mother board), and clean the remove the old thermal paste on the cpu and apply new thermal paste (Its under the heatsink behind the mother board).
I did all of the above and the main problem I came to a conclusion for my situation was it was the hard drive that was corrupt due to me dropping my laptop one too many times even though I had a case, the vibrations from the drop could mess up the disk inside the harddrive after it being dropped multiple times.

Hello, I erased & formated my hard drive under "Extended Journal" & tried to reinstall OSX 10x10 & now I'm getting a flashing folder during start up! Also When I try to reinstall 10x10 it wont authenticate & says call Apple Care. Is this something I could fix with a boot disk?
Do a video on checking the drive cable, I think many have this issue. So even though the drive may even be replaced if it is a bad cable, the same issue will show up on a brand new drive(dead giveaway).

Yes this perfect I recently discovered that "startup disk has no space" so I did the regular --download empty - track empty etc... I noticed two things. 1) ther are some 37 items in trash I can't see and arnt being deleted. 2) every time I try restart I have 19gb which slowly reduces to 750mb... and this only happens when am connected to the net… I'm thinking its the same issue

Disk Utility asked me to backup & erase the hard drive. That could have fixed it but data was important and had no other backup. I remember the error said ‘Invalid B tre…’ likewise. I got this tool called Stellar Volume Repair in $49 and it fixed it without the need of erasing the hard drive.
This was really helpful. I did two things differently. I backed up first. After I ran it I got the fearsome red message to backup/ reformat /restore. I RE RAN the repair utility and got the green light YEA. Only thing missing from your instructions is how to get OUT of the disk utility! Thank you for your clear instructions on how to run this, really.

You are probably never gonna see this but it’s actually a rubber keyboard cover so the actual keyboard under it is completely fine.

Verified disk. Repaired disk and got error message "Disk Utility can't repair the disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files". Yep. El Capitan actually changed Disk Utility and I have to admit the new version is crap! It is missing most of the useful features, such as repair permissions! WTF Apple...

+Megan Kohtz corrupted physical media, replace the hard drive. Try to back up whatever you can to another external disk. if you dont know how to do this find someone who is mac'savvy.
I had to go to my local Mac repair shop to get this sorted, and they up loaded the latest OS too :-)

+TechInside yes exactly how u did. now I've realised I use a Hackintosh and that boot up is different with uni and multibeast etc. on the other hand the real problem that persists so I've finally found out is a VIRUS or malware that's eating up my hardrive. as long as its quarantined and disconnected the space in my Mac HD is Intact. +eshan sharma It hangs as in it is not booting up? My issue was not about the start up, It was mostly corrupting files and wouldn't delete files. If your computer won't start it could be due to a bad driver and you should reinstall the OS. Granted I am not sure what is exactly the issue with your specific computer so take what I say with a grain of salt.
