  • If you can't get an external hard drive or USB flash drive to mount when you plug it in your Mac, you usually open Disk Utilities and try from there. If that doesn't work, try this Command Line technique in the Terminal Application on Mac OS X.
    Our video describing how to do it in the GUI in Disk Utility is here:

    If you failed to mount the disk via command, the disk is seriously corrupted. Use iBoysoft Mac Data Recovery to recover 1GB data for free: bit.ly/3lVUhtx

      @theunifiedfield. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the tip! IBoysoft data recovery worked for me after I scanned the disk and let it run over night. When I opened the computer in the morning the scan had completed, but amazingly the disk had mounted properly and I managed to eject it as normal, then backed it up to another hard drive.

    Incredible! Thank you so much for putting this together. Here I was thinking I lost over 14 TB of data, and about to surrender and ask for a refund or replacement from WD, and I found your video. I followed the steps and although mine did not launch/mount automatically, I followed the advice of someone in the comments who said to wait 60-90 mins as it can take a while to rescan drive. Came back later and the drive had mounted and I have my files back! Amazing amazing amazing!

    This video has helped me more times than I care to admit! I recently upgraded to an M1 iMac Running Monterey. I have an external HD (Western Digital 6tb). After connecting it to my iMac upon transferring a very very small file my whole computer hung. I later read through Mac forums that Western Digital announced that it is a known issue with M1 Monterey for external drives particularly the 4tb to hang. Anyways, This process totally worked and I was able to retrieve my drive. I'd also like to note for anyone reading this - I previously tried to use diskutil and first aid as well as using terminal to unmount and mount. All things failed - but the sudo drive technique seems to always work! THANK YOU!

    For anyone who got “/Volumes/usb failed with 1”, just leave your drive plugged in for 30-90 minutes to see if it pops up. Catalina takes forever to rescan some hard drives after they’ve been improperly ejected, like mine. Hope this helps.

  • @shelaghcorbett2387
    @shelaghcorbett2387 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanks for your clear instructions! Unfortunately I'm still unable to mount my HDD external drive since upgrading to Catalina (it's the highest OS I can use on my old late 2012 mac which is still running pretty well) and wondering if there might be another limiting factor related to Time Machine backups. the HSF+ format on Catalina OS.
    First off, First Aid in Disk Utility says it's fine, all good---suggesting the hard drive and data isn't corrupt (?), but I can't mount it all the same. Also, unlike you, there's no external drive/disk image icon on my desktop (or in Finder, of course), but I can see it in Disk Utility and Terminal (so I know my computer can access the external drive.) My external drive is formatted as an HSF+. (Terminal identifies it as and "HSF" but elsewhere it identifies it as HSF+ Extended Journal), which I've read Catalina is supposed to be able to mount and read/access (meaning HSF+, not HSF standard). However, I have Time Machine Backups on this drive (as well as other files) and I'm wondering if the problem has something to do with a that....From the reading-up I've done today, it seems that Catalina can't us APFA formatted drives to do Time Machine back-ups, but it may also have trouble reading HSF drives?
    FIY, I ran through all our instructions in your tutorial in Terminal and all seemed to go well, save that my drive still didn't mount; I got the exact same error you got and could overlook, but in my case. the disk image icon on the desk top didn't show up anyway. (And, as I said, I can't see the external drive icon on my desktop in any case. Attempts to mount after I ran your instructions in Terminal via Disk Utility just returned the "DiskManagement.disenter error 49153", which is where my journey today started!
    At this point, I might be satisfied just to be able to "read only" the file. I can sacrifice the Time Machine BUs, so long as I can can format the drive in Catalina to make new ones (sounds like there might be a conflict there) but I really need to review the rest of the files before wiping my drive clean.
    Sorry for this very long comment...just found your explanation very lucid and hope you might have some insight into my problem. Cheers.

      For those who is seeing this error, i've got a solution: run "diskutil list" again, and find the IDENTIFIER for your actual hard drive. Also open your Disk Utility, and look at the actual format of your disk. For example, my disk format is "ntfs", and identifier is "disk2s1". And then run "sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/disk2s1 /Volumes/usb". (Note, you need to use the correct format after -t and the path should be end with the disk identifier). This worked for me!

    Thank you so so much! Doing this allowed my LaCie to mount and my previous file to appear. Fear that I lost my huge file averted! So once I typed in my new name for my drive, "LaCie" it then created it and then mounted the previous drive also by its original name, also "LaCie". So now "LaCie" & "LaCie 1" are present. Clicked on the original now mounted drive, success! File is back! Drive mounted. You the best!🖤🙆‍♀️
