Richard, I want to send you my sincerest thank you for this video. This is the first time I have EVER commented on a TH-cam video, and this tutorial is now the reason why. My external hard drive suddenly stopped mounting on my laptop (and a backup laptop too). My whole life from 2016 to now was on it, and the thought of losing it all sent me into a depressed tailspin. So much so that it was literally making me nauseous.
I tried downloading recovery software, which was scanning the hard drive for hours, yet found nothing. I was at a complete loss for what to do so searched on TH-cam and found this video. Following your tutorial fixed the problem completely and I could not be happier. You do not know how grateful I am for you posting this.

Glad you got it sorted. You should ALWAYS have a backup of your hard drives. Especially stuff that we care about and never want to loose. It sucks because you have to buy 2 hard drives for the use of one but it is always best to have a mirror of your hard drives

My friend has an iMac 2013 and after a power failure it doesn’t boot, after running disk utility it reports the HDD is unformatted and smart error.
I can’t run First Aid even if I select the disc, the disc also report a size of 4.14GB, actual size is 1TB.
Tried to install Homebrew and testdisk from the Terminal to recover the partition but it throws up a syntax error.
Can I run testdisk from a USB drive? Or anything else I can do to recover the partition?

when i do disk verify my harddrive says guide table required what do i do? is my harddrive gone? but sometimes it shows all my data in finder. The issue i am facing is my hard drive is detecting but its not loading the folder and sometimes it does load but it is extremely slow

still having issues with this 1. could you let mw know what i would need to do in order to get the mount point to mount.
my error is
repairin file system
volume is already unmounted
performing fsck_exfat-y-x/dev/disk1s1
checking volume
checking main boot regionthe voluime could not be verified completely
file system check exit code is 1
restoring the original state found as unmounted
file system verify or repair failed
operation failed...
would would be process for this..?

What do I do to fix an invalid B-tree node size?
at the sudo fsck_HFS ... command the output says:
...
**Checking journaled HFS Plus volume.
Invalid B-tree node size
(3,0)
**the volume could not be verified completely
I have to say, this has saved me not once, but TWICE now when my hard drive wasn’t mounting and I was worried it had failed. Thank you so much!

Hey Richard, a little late to the party after the first step I get a GPT partitioning scheme is required? what does that mean exactly ? Also my PC will open the hard drive but my mac will not, it opens and then says loading on the mac. I would transfer everything but that will take months. any help?

After running - sudo fsck_HFS /dev/disk4s2 - a result was "Invalid node structure" and "Invalid record count". Any suggestion on how to proceed? Thanks
I may need your help. I was trying to update my OS to Big Sur and the install failed mid install. I had to take the computer into Apple. Instead of re-install the OS and erasing my drive, they just put a new OS on a new drive. I have the old drive but it won't mount. They ran tests and showed the drive works fine. I tried disk utility both ways and the drive fails to mount. It sees the drive. A data recovery software recognizes all of the files, but upon recovery they are corrupted (pictures, movies, music). Ther terminal says unable to verify this whole disk: A GUID Partitiion Table partitioning scheme is required. I'm not erasing the drive. Need a solution.

I had mac os installed, I wanted to have a multi os bootable system,(mac, windows and linux) si l went and installed windows on a empty partition, BIG MISTAKE!, later I found out that I should have installed on a different physical disk, but id diidn't what happened next is that could not longer enter mac os, it was damaged, but from windows with an specific app i still can access and see the files, I erased windows and reinstalled mac os, but not able to access the mac os partition where all my files were, i can see it but it cannot be remounted, i'm trying this option from the terminal, the partion that i want now says "windows_LDM", I'M looking for an easy option, ideal fix the partion and be able to remount it, the disk ultility doesn't let me remount not even to apply first aid, any suggestions? last resort is to access it from a windows os with that app and extract the files, or from an other mac with a recovery app, any suggestions?

Thanks man. I tried this but no joy. The same external hard drive works on my old mac but wont show up on the new mac. Tried the force mount via terminal but no success. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!
Might be the partition type different and if thats the case, you will need to use old mac os, transfer the data from ext hdd to any other external or internet (depends on data) move it and then you will need to format that external drive in exFAT and then transfer it back to it, then it should work for both mac os and windows as well.

I have used this twice now. LaCie drive stopped mounting when my mac book pro died unexpectedly.
for lacie drives you must input ExFAT instead of hfs.

Thanks for the help, (it didn't work for me, I'm gonna try again in recovery and reformat my drive), but I jsut wanted to suggest saying what you write in terminal rather than saying what you are not writing example- you said: disk utility but you wrote: diskutil

Hi Richard I have a Q: after following all steps and last thing I put was sudo fsck_HFS /dev/disk3s2 = it came up saying "Can't open /dev/rdisk3s2: Resource busy" ---- any ideas on how to fix this?

@@harrisonauld8806 i tried to follow everything but i haven’t yet been able to recover. I called a few places but the prices was a few hundred and said they “might be able” to get it back- sometimes when i plug it in i get it to work and then i transfer as much data as i can but like the whole drive is full unfortunately so just taking it little by little :/ I don’t know anything about the codes and stuff in Terminal or Disk Utility (i tried it but didn’t seem to work for me unless i didn’t do everything right) sending you good luck!! & if you figure anything out let me know haha
@@LouisaKristina haha okay, i’ll keep trying. sad thing is, this is a hard drive that i had payed 1800 dollars for because my hard drive i had before this did a similar thing so i paid 1800 dollars to get it fixed but only got like 20% of my stuff back and he gave it to me on this hard drive which is now also not working. i’ve only had this hard drive for 2 months. i have no luck lol.

Hello sir, thank you for the video. My problem is that I have a mojave ssd 1TB drive that I thought I could just plug into a new mac. But while it shows up in the disk utility as greyed out, it does work with the original macbook pro. It seems as if it has been altered from HFS journaled to APFS and won't mount. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
If they have data stored already on that drive and it switched formats, you may have lost the data. If you never had anything but trying to mount the drive. Go format the drive back to HFS. TH-cam should have videos if you need help. It is short but write detailed. Please let me know if you need help with anything else.

Is there any other solution to mount the drive, if its either not showing in disk utility, nor in the terminal? I only see the Hard Drive in System Information under USB, BUT it shows only the top part until Extra Operating Current (mA). The bottom part with all the other information such as File System and BSD Name doesnt show up,. In my case I cant use the commands, because I dont see anywhere the BSD name diskxsy…

When I typed diskutil verifyDisk disk2 in the Terminal, it said " Error starting partition map verification for disk2: This operation is restricted by Sandbox; check your settings in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Files and Folders (-69464)" However, when I followed the instruction and go to the Files and Folders, I don't know what to do? Could you please kindly advise what could I do?

I have an APFS SSD and I have been able to get the end as shown your video (using APFS instead of HFS). It also shows that the external ssd has been mounted properly as shown in your video.
However, the drive still does not show up on the Finder.

Same here. for the first command "fsck_hfs -rc -d /dev/disk3s2" it returned "The volume could not be verified completely." for the second command it shows that the external ssd has been mounted properly as shown in Richard's video.
