- If you get a disk locked error on your mac when installing a new OS these are the steps you need to take. Catalina high sierra mountain lion operating system.I went through this process on a 2009 Macbook Pro so it should be easier on more modern systems.

Great video! I spent hours trying to figure out how to get the High Sierra OS on my 2011 iMac because I couldn't get the drive unlocked. This video nailed it. Straight to the point and it worked like a charm. Thanks!

What if you have another external hard drive available? do you still have to partition the main SSD you want the operating system on?

Am having a similar problem.
If I partition the drive and reinstall Mac OS on that partition, will I lose all the info I have on the locked side of the partition drive. I have a lot of music on there that I don’t want to lose.
After making the partition, and holding option to boot under two different drives, either drive I boot under gives me ONLY apple logo with no loading symbol. Any ideas of what to do?

I am trying to boot Catalina from flash drive and just like you my flash drive was locked when I tried to do the install on the boot flash drive. I did partition my flash like you said but think my flash drive partitions are too small now. Do you have to have the install Catalina on the same drive your wanting to do the install on? May have to get a larger flash drive if that is the case. Using a 16GB but may need a 32 or 64GB,

Why would you want to split your hard drive size in half to install the OS? So what happens to the other 250GB of hard drive space? Does anyone have a better way?

Theirs an extra hard drive on mine and but it just loads when it hits sign in to Apple takes a very long time
That’s an easy fix just partition it
It will fail then click erase then set as Mac OS extended journal
Then go back and try the reinstall works for me every time
How did u split partition
It won’t let me partition the HDD: „Invalid request“. 2TB, tried to create a 500GB volume as well as 1TB (which is totally oversized for the system install). So there’s a 2TB HDD which can’t be partitioned and „this disk is locked“... 🤔
So what did you do? Did you find a solution?
hi but still doestnt solve the problem of unlocking the hard drive I was installing new update and it froze since then my original hard drive is locked and I instal old os on the other disk which I use as storage but I want my original disk to be unlocked and be able to instal on it that I can use my Mac as before do you know how to do it ?

I created a partition like you suggested now my computer wont turn on. The apple icon will appear, itll load halfway then crash. My original MacHD used to load up. Now after I did the partition the only Hard Drive I see when I turn on the computer and hold down option is Recovery. Any suggestions?
I created this solution because that's what was happening to me so you probably have to go back and delete that partition in settings
I messed mine up it will not boot I keep getting dos prompts and reboots can’t even use Apple r ???? I’m stuck

hey imperfect guide -- u have helped - i thank u ----------however i am naive but when i have a problem i search---0k so i did separate not the external one but the internal one cos i couldnot separe the internal disk as not able to partition. however u may have wanted to something different but i might have understood otherwise,, anyway thanks

“ this volume can’t be resized” ?
go on the disk utillity, right click and lock for display all drive, go on erase it.hopefully that will solve uer problem.thnx

But what if you’re iMac won’t turn on only goes into recovery mode 😩😭
It goes to recovery mode without a hard drive? You can repartition your hd from recovery mode with disk utility.

@@musicmusic4801 unfortunately guys I am not an expert but I did find a solution to this specific issue. I'm not understanding what you are trying to do from recovery mode. You can access disk utility from recovery mode and fix the disk that way.
The fix to the locked drive is that one partition has to be APFS

It worked for most. I'm not a computer genius I just showed what I accomplished.sorry if it didn't work for you.

It works for some and doesn't for others. Good luck in your search. There is also plenty of people it worked for. I'm sure people eat different you foodss than you too. Should we close the restaurants you don't eat at?

Hi, could you please help me. This is the exact problem that I have with my Mac. I want to reinstall the OS but the hard drive is locked. This video is helpful, but being a complete Mac noob, I am lost. Could you do a step by step on how you did the partion please 🙏🙏🙏 I don't want to mess up my computer further by making a mistake. Can’t open safari or chrome so I tried to reset the whole computer and erase everything, then I couldn’t install the disc like you did in this video, and when I tried to open the disc utility things I couldn’t even click continue so now I’m sitting here with a computer that won’t let me click continue, but now I can’t even open or click on anything. I just clicked shutdown and now it won’t turn in Jesus the Christ that’s wild, I guess I’ll throw away my new computer

Not helpful whatsoever. The drive is locked? It can't be partitioned? That doesn't make sense.
