    We tried to leave Syria, but our friends wouldn't let us! After an intense, eye-opening and incredible period of time travelling throughout Syria, we met some amazing people. But it is finally time to leave the country, and travel back corsaing the border on to Lebanon, and then on to a new destination. At least that was the original plan. Syria has been a whirlwind experience from start to almost finish, and this isn't about to change 🙃

    I'm Syrian who left Syria 2 years ago, and currently live in Russia, and I gotta say I'm so glad you've enjoyed yourselves and the hospitality there, and I really hope that things get better there in the next few years, so maybe you can make a Syria 2.0 series to revisit your new friends there and make a comparison. After a busy summer and with the weather turning, I'm spending more time indoors and finally catching up on about 4 months worth of your videos. This series from Syria has been both enlightening and humbling. Firstly, because I've learnt how beautiful a country it is and secondly, because given the horrors and hardship that the people have and still are suffering, their generosity and love of their country is clear for all to see. Great content as always, especially when it highlights all the positivity that the Syrians have, which is in stark contrast to a lot of perceptions. Bravo Matt and Julia.

    Ah, Damascus. Visited in 1976 on our way to Yemen. The bazaar, the food, the traffic and the main mosque. I had to put on an almost full chador but it was a beautiful green color and, then, just "exotic" and a bit like getting dressed up for a party. Times have changed. We still use a beautiful tablecloth that we got at the bazaar! Such a lovely video this is. As always, thank you so much (shoukran!!!) for this one. Splendid for you and it brings back memories.

    Agree totally with another comment on the title. How about: We had to party or friends wouldn't let us leave Syria. Or something like that. Understand you might not want or be able to make political comments. Not a word about Ukraine in all the Russia videos... that I understand, at least that's the view from outside of Russia that you might get in deep trouble for disparaging observations/comments. You are sharing a window on the people, places and lives that many of us will never experience and it is almost always a very positive point of view. That's part of the point for you, isn't it? These aren't BBC documentaries into the "underbelly" of any given government. I would suggest, you couldn't do that without quite a bit of peril to yourselves. Perhaps a book later with more reflection on the politics. For now, I'm happy to see the good side of every single place you go, showing the dignity, humanity and goodness of people. Merci encore. Linda

      @MattandJulia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello 🙂
      Appreciate your comment, thank you, however it was by no means intended in the way you mentioned. It was a play on words because our friends literally wouldn’t let us leave the country. We don’t see this title as clickbait, as we genuinely weren’t allowed to go by our friends. But we can get where you are coming from, and apologise for any unwanted offence. Unfortunately, TH-cam is very fickle and without putting ‘cliffhangers’ in our titles our views drop, drastically. We have access to all of our ‘analytics’ and every time we put a neutral title in, the views (which are what we depend on to be able to travel) are dire.
      It is a shame that it has to be that way but we are only trying our best to make sure our videos are watched. Nevertheless, our intention here wasn’t to offend anyone, especially after we’ve spent the last 2 months highlighting everything good and bad around this country. We are all human, and our intentions were pure. We can only apologise for the upset caused ❤️

      Indeed, unfortunately so. The idea that people who’ve never met us personally believe they have the absolute right to attack us and criticise our personalities/integrity as people, based on a TH-cam video title, is a sad reflection of todays keyboard world.

    About the clickbait comments below, I assumed from the title that the reason you 'couldn't leave' was because of the incredible hospitality and friendliness of the people who wanted you to stay longer. Thankfully, I've been fortunate enough to experience Syrian hospitality from refugees here in Canada. Incredibly hospitable and generous culture. If you want the Canadian equivalent in hospitality, go to Newfoundland. If you do decide to go there, just ask me and I'll teach you the proper pronunciation.:)

    The last three Matt and Julia videos that I watched used "click bate" titles that implied dire circumstances for the couple, but ended up having little to do with the content. I find this strategy to be insulting, so while I enjoyed the videos prior to this new tactic, I am dropping the subscription.

    • @MattandJulia
      @MattandJulia  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      How on Earth is “Meeting Syria’s Most Secretive Man”, “What it’s like to be tourist in Alleppo” and “Partying with a local family in Syria” clickbait? This feels a little bit like jumping on the bandwagon to be honest.

    • @darrylandrews7277
      @darrylandrews7277 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "To be honest," I'm not sure what "bandwagon" you are referring to. Plus, I have never viewed the three videos that you mention. My comment was about other recent videos where I felt that the title was a bit too dramatic for the content. Instead of jumping straight to "denial," just keep this in mind as you create future videos. I really do wish you the best in the future, but based on my recent experience with your postings, and especially with your response above, I really don't want to be a subscriber.

      Why should you be able to voice your opinion any which way you desire but me not be able to reply?
      I understand that you are fully entitled to feel a certain way and your opinion is fully valid, however, just bare in mind, we are two people trying our best, and comments like this and the others under this video actually encourage personal attacks on us and our character as people.
      Over the last 24 hours we’ve had some incredibly mean personal digs, calling in to question everything about us.
      We go to a lot of effort to make travel videos for people to watch and enjoy.
      Forgive me for getting a little defensive among a barrage of abuse after putting our heart and soul in the everything we do.

      What did you expect titling a video something along the lines of being trapped in Syria... Are you really that obtuse? Then to get offended when a subscriber has an issue with it? 😂

    While it is interesting to see countries that most tourists would never venture out to, your Syria visit does beg the question - in a world so large, why pick a country where there's a reasonable risk to life?

    • @MattandJulia
      @MattandJulia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why not? Safety was guaranteed by the tour company and we wanted to visit the cradle of civilisations.

    What a phenomenal walk, OMG. The pair of you would have been so sore for days after that.
    Hopefully, once things settle down, they'll have a cable car going to the top.
    I can only imagine what it would have looked like before America's proxy war.

      YOU DON'T HAVE ANY TRAVEL VIDEOS!

    Damascus is one of the most important cities in the history of the world. Thousands of years of history and intellectual and cultural innovation. A treasure. What the Americans have engineered here is beyond unforgivable…Ukraine is just waking up to what has happened to them…and whose fault it is; the Syrians have always known.
