    Not to good... you don't use spray gun to get orange peel effect and hoping that paint will smooth out. You use spray gun to have glass like finish from the beginning. Otherwise, you use roller or brush.

    If you stand up a door to spray, you can cover part of the wall with plastic, or masking paper first. And sometimes to cover edges of the door with masking, if the color might wrap around to the other side of the door.

    Nice Video . I have done some interior doors and garage door with automotive HVLP gun also using flow modifier and water . Works pretty well . Very good adhesion and durability on my garage door exterior . If I substitute 70% isopropyl alcohol ( rubbing alcohol) for both water and flow modifier it somehow makes eggshell or semi-gloss paint gain a nice texture as the IPA evaporates . Its pretty pronounced texture so probably suitable indoors only . Have done white and pastel only .

    Never use latex on doors. It will stick to the weather stripping and hear the sound every time you open it. It called blocking and it never goes away unless you treat the edges. Some jerks painted all the doors in a apartment with latex I was in once and all the doors stuck even after five years of living there.

    • @chriscraft77022
      @chriscraft77022  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It’s probably the weatherstrip on your door.. none of mine do that..

    • @plssmellmycheese
      @plssmellmycheese ปีที่แล้ว +3

      a little trick is to add a tiny smear of oil/grease to the edges that contact weather strips...eg vaseline, wd40... literally a tiny wipe and wipe off almost dry, to leave an invisible (close to 1 molecule thick) film...this trick used to be used in the old days to enable closing of doors/windows after gloss paint application (which would never be dry to the touch by the end of the work day)...it just sits on the curing paint, and it still cures fine underneath.

      Chris Craft I hear what your saying, latex (water base) paint always seems to take so long to dry and even when it’s dry ie like a shelf application wherever you place on top always wants to stick somewhat way after the application date. You sure don’t want to screw up the sealing mechanism between the panels, that would not be good day. I’ve already painted 2 metal passage primed doors with window inserts which had a plastic frame work. I sprayed canned primer over the plastic frame work as you directed, dusting it and the end result was pretty dam good first time out of the chute, even if I say so myself. I'm going to take the screen out of my gun this time around as I think it was restricting paint flow. I followed your Flood and thinning of the paint and added some water as well. Thx again

Glad this worked out well for you .. but if someone is trying to spray thicker paints, for a small investment, the higher tip gun is much better to use. I learned the hard way myself. Another benefit to using smaller tips is lower CFM requirements. For doors and trim I’ll normally use my airless with a 517 or 211 tip. But for small things, it’s not practical. For plates, vents and small trim projects, I’ll reach for an LVLP or mini gun (.8 to 1.8). I can buy quarts, there's very little overspray and minimal air required. My pancake is usually on site anyway.

    • @carlkellogg5342
      @carlkellogg5342 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Chris, I agree with you 100%. I use a 2.0 mm tip for Latex at 25 PSI in a LVLP gun (gravity feed) and it works great. I mix 8 oz. of warm water per qt. of paint and 200 ml. of Floetrol per qt. of paint. Add slow and mix well. Spray it very wet and watch for runs. Oh and take the spray gun filter out of the gun. Latex will flow much better with it out.
