30 sec Fix to Spray Latex paint with a $10 HVLP Spray Paint Gun

- Today at The Garage Engineer, we modify an HVLP spray paint gun to be able to spray latex paint. Normally, the stock 1.4mm tip that comes with HVLP spray guns is too small to spary latex paint. This mod will help overcome that issue with just a drill.

if you aint modifying your tools, you aint living ! well done : )
Good words to live by. Thanks for watching!
You do it VERY different than most people I feel.
I I understand that that gun has a built-in filter but you should always have a secondary filter to filter out any contaminations as you pointed into your top painter.
Also I highly recommend that you water down your paint as recommended on the can.
Very good video but a few things you should absolutely work on.
Thank you
I sprayed latex with the same gun, just like any paint that going to be sprayed through a hvlp you need to thin it down and upgrade your reservoir to the spectrum paint canister system, I did a 20% mix regular water works fine.
Great tip. I like the Spectrum upgrade idea. Thanks for watching!
I just used a purple gun to spray slightly thinned Rustoleum latex and it was fine. No drill needed. I don't know why all thesd forjms ssy it can't be done, which I clearly did. When dry it is totally solid. Will not scrape away....did not effect durability.
Also intuition tells me that simple drilling the fluid tip and not making compensation to the air cap is probably like opening up the flow valve all the way and keeping the air pressure at minimum. Again I thinned with water about 25% and sprayed with a 1.4. Sprsyed like anything else I have ever sprayed making normal pattern and flow valve adjustments using 30 to 35 psi dynamic at the tip. Higher static. Who cares how high the static is. Pull the trigger and look. Turn left or right. Done.
Great input. Thanks for sharing.
Amazon is full of cheap help guns that come with a 2.0 nozzle and pin. I would never suggest drilling a nozzel.
The tool you are using to clean the tip. Is used for cleaning welding tips.
Thanks for the tip!
I watched your video and I found it interesting. I am using the same gun.
Using Sherwin-Williams Emerald paint, they only recommend 10-20% reduced with distilled water. I use a 30% reduced rate and the handles it perfectly no modification to the gun. I use a paint measure cup to get my reduction rate.
@@mechanix55 good info to know. I will give it a try. Thanks for watching.
All depends on the Thinning and work from there i have done many doors Latex and it comes out find Glossy as.
Good to know. I hate thinning too much but I think I need to go thinner on some of my paints. Thanks for watching.
2k Basecoat or Enamel Gloss Oil Based my Psi is 25 depending on the Compressor if using Clear Coat Psi 30 just need to paly around myself have it down put now.
2k is the best but I don’t have enough projects to justify the upgrade from latex yet. Thanks for watching and thanks for your tips.
I would try reducing the fan size.
Good idea.
Yes you can order nozzles & needles for that gun. It took a bit of research, but it was a common gun years ago. Yes I ruined a nozzle by trying to drill it out. You must REALLY clean that gun out and re-lubricate it as most of the tips will rust rather quickly if you spray a water based finish.
good points. thanks for watching.
Where do you get tbe tips?????
So that is water based paint as if using Oil Gloss enamel would need Turps.
It was latex
Thin it more and get closer to the cardboard
Good tips.
Where to begin......old somewhat dried up paint with rust in it after opening - place a paint can lid on your paint can from day one so that the rim stays clean and doesn't rust - didn't use a disposable filter to put paint in mixing cup, once filtered dilute before adding to sprayer. wow
.
I waited 16 painful minutes for poor results. I can never get that back.
?
@@TheGarageEngineer EVERYONE knows about drilling out the port for thicker paint. I wasted 16 minute watching someone paint poorly. Try again after you figure this out.
Holy moly what a waste of time!
Nothing is more frustrating than trying to be taught by a guy that doesn't even know what he's doing himself.....
Disgusting!
@@DCMARTIN agree!
Was helpful for me thanks
Dude your killing me...All of that for what? Why didn't you just go back? And thin the paint one more time. And why are you spraying on a piece of cardboard? Should have been a piece of wood or drywall. Or something in a real world application where you can actually see the real results. Cardboard it's good to start testing. But you should have actually painted something. I agree with the guy below.
.
Why does ot take 16 1/2 minutes to explain what you say is a 30 second "fix" which isn't really a fix, but a modification
Life is a journey. Not a speed race. Thanks for watching!
Never saw anyone drill a hole to exact measurement like that in my life. Wiggle wobble by hand ???? waste my time.
.
Dude sounds like Chris from Family Guy. Please don't call yourself an "engineer" if you aren't one. It's very misleading. "Engineer" actually means something.
He is 'The Garage Engineer' and he has a pair of calipers, Travis.
As of me posting this comment, he has MORE content uploaded to TH-cam and more subscribers than you, Travis. TRAVIS.
Thanks for the support! Thanks for watching.
I do sound a little like Chris. Were all here to have fun. Thanks for watching.
I’d delete this video if I was you, what an absolute waste of time this video is.
Interesting opinion. Thanks for watching.
