    Anyone else kinda bummed we never got to see Gorr the god butcher butcher any gods? Like we saw a bit of aftermath and one light kill early on but kinda wanted to see Gorr in full Gorr anger mode eviscerate a god, thought it would be Zeus before I saw the movie, but felt it had the same issue as Carnage in Venom 2

    Probably one of the most disappointing changes from comic to movie was the fact that they took out Gor's empathy to mortals. It's an important aspect of his character, but he does his best to not hurt any mortals in his mission. There's a scene where followers of thor attack him, and he does his best not to hurt them, and pleads for them to just stop and consider how empty their lives are in service to a god. Like, he has a flawed philosophy, but it's consistent, and based in equal measure malice and love.
    And I kept thinking that he shouldn't be terrorizing kids. He'd never do that. I could believe he'd try kidnapping them, but I'd imagine it more likely that he would've tried kindness with the children, and appealing to their empathy to get them on his side. Hell I thought what could've been amazing is if after he acquired stormbreaker, he had also sent the children home, to emphasize that his mission was killing exclusively gods, so mortals could live more peacfully (in his opinion)
    And that could've been an interesting wavering point for Valkeryie too. She could've had a moment where she almost agrees with him, taking issue with how her sisters pointlessly died in battle, women she loved, and maybe even taken issue with Thor just thrusting this political position she despises upon her. But to be fair, this kind of dynamic would be very intense for a comedy rock opera, and the movie had enough issues with tone as it is.

      @ILUVWEBJUNK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +106

      This 100%. In the cage, I was really hoping Gor would be kind to the children while thinking of his daughter. When he ripped the head off of the shadow monster he created, I was hoping it was his attempt at trying to be “funny” in an EXTREMELY out-of-touch (I-hope-they-find-this-funny) type of way. But after the scene ended, I sadly had succumb to the fact that this was his way to torment them…for no reason??

    This is exactly what I was terrified off. Taiga is a comedic director, Thor ragnarok was a breath of fresh air but after infinity war and endgame you’d expect Thor to have matured a bit more and his character he finally be ready for an opponent like Gorr who’s gone through much of the same pain as Thor, losing a loved one and finding someone to blame it on and wanting to do everything in your power to kill him. (Loki and Thanos) except for Gorr it’s all the gods. It could’ve been a very powerful and emotional movie.
    But no
    Hammer threesome jokes.

    • @ajiththomas2465
      @ajiththomas2465 2 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Honestly, I think why I consider Guardians Vol 2 and the Ant-Man films to have the right balance while considering Thor: Ragnarok to be too jokey is because of scale, stakes, and expectations. The Ant-Man films have never had end-of-the-world stakes but instead more personal stakes that affect only a select few people close to the characters. The scale of the stakes in comparison to the humor in the Ant-Man films felt appropiate. Meanwhile with Guardians Vol 2, while the scale is certainly much bigger, it's crux lied in the very grounded, human-like emotional journey of Peter Quill/Star-Lord. It helps that the GotG films never really took themselves that seriously.
      Now contrast that with the latest 2 Thor films, where the scale and expectations are much bigger. The main characters in the Thor films aren't humans or humanoid aliens but gods or at least advanced aliens mistaken for gods. When your antagonists are Hela the Goddess of Death and Gorr the Butcher of Gods, there's a rather high expectation of scale and expectations. The expectations set by Hela and Gorr being such menacing cataclysmic foes that cleave through and threaten the people and civilization of Asgard comes with it a certain expectation of gravitas and seriousness. A civilization-ending threat necessitates some gravitas. If instead the set expectation was more like Hela or Gorr had killed a group of Asgardian children or a personal friend of Thor's like one of the Warriors Three, and Thor had set out on a quest for revenge, then the constant humor and joking wouldn't clash with the tone nearly as much because the scale and expectations are set more appropiately. There would still be stakes and dramatic moments but the scale and set expectations of the main antagonists and how much of a threat they menace to be is scaled appropriately to the tone and humor.
      It's not like the MCU haven't been able to balance humor with drama, especially when it comes to Thor. If the humor and jokes were used as a defense/coping mechanism to help with fear and trauma, like we see with Thor in _Infinity War_ and _Endgame_ , then it'd be understandable and appropriate in a sense. But when the jokes are made just because and it goes from laughing with Thor making jokes to laughing at Thor as the joke, that's when the clashing of tones is really apparent.
      Do you get what I mean by this?

You see, the sowrd might corrupt Gorr up to a certain point, but that doesn't take away his love for his daughter. Every time she transformed it purged her of all toxins, like her chemo, and basically reset all her progress towards fighting cancer. Since the cancer is a part of her, the transformation didn't remove it, only the chemicals fighting it . Also, in the movie Jane was already worthy, quasi shown with Thor's whole "you showed me how to be worthy again". When I watched the movie, it seemed like the entire movie was a tale being told by Korg, which explained why the whole thing was SO over the top. The bit of Thor riding Stormbreaker was a direct call back to how Korg thought Thor could fly from his hammer in Ragnorok. If the entire movie is just how Korg remembers things, then that would explain the wacky tone, BUT it just isn’t communicated clearly enough, and over all… it doesn’t work and makes the entire movie feel like a joke. This is something I mentioned before, but I’ve heard similar sentiments with other reviewers: Ragnarok balanced the comedy and action, but *because* it was more comedic and light hearted than the other Thor films, Taika assumed that the comedy was the sole reason why Ragnarok was successful. Because of that, Taika assumed that “oh they don’t care about the action. They like dumb Thor.” and so he cut out the action for Love and Thunder.
    It also doesn’t help since Thor is in a fairly dark place mentally so all the comedy doesn’t really fit.
    Hell, the original Thor is a breath of fresh air compared to this one. If you view it less like a superhero film and more like a Shakespearean play, then it’s far more entertaining

He lost everything and still praised his god, it's only when he came face to face with his god that he realised he was misguided. That unyielding belief turned into hate and that's why the Sword chose him. The Sword doesn't exonerate him. Just gave him the power to do what he wanted. The corrupting sword is from the comics, but that was years and years after Gorr had possession of the sword before it's influence began to eclipse his revenge motivation. In fact it really only became apparent after he pretty much accomplished his revenge and still was evil becoming more or less a god himself. The lore of the sword is deep and connects to Venom and the silver surfer and galactus. The sword could have been its own 10 year MCU arc, if Marvel owned all it's characters.

      @crashnbyrne 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Even if the MCU owned all the characters, they would mess it up. Disney have ruined the MCU after Endgame, (Which was the nail in the coffin IMO). For instance, Hawkeye, wasn't about Hawkeye, Falcon and The Winter soldier wasnt about either of the title characters, jesus, even Moonknight was more about the Scarlet scarab. Funnily enough though, Ms. Marvel and She Hulk are (and will) focus on the title characters. Anyone see a pattern forming?

    I understood that in Thor Ragnarok planet Sakaar was a strange and silly place. Trash and scum ended up there from all parts of the universe. It was open to strange occurrences and silly circumstances. Then Asgard was destroyed and things got serious. Infinity war and Endgame were well thought out movies with a laugh here and there, but a serious plot and characters to overcome the evil that had taken control of the universe. Thor, being one of the most powerful MCU characters, stepped up and did his thing in both of the Thanos driven movies.
    Now what for Thor? Back to being silly is by far the most senseless, whimsical trait the writers could have done to this character. Not only was Sakaar silly, everything about Thor is now silly. Friends are silly. Fighting is silly. Gods are silly. Cultures are silly. Tradition is silly. Kids are silly. Even death is silly. The whole point of this movie is silly. Thor (the protagonist and hero of the film, dare I say the MCU) is now the most silly SOB there ever was. The only serious character in this god forsaken movie is the antagonist, Gorr. I don't even want to start on how they waisted Gorr as a character and Christian Bale as an actor, just completely and utterly wasted!
    What is the message here? That life and the unavoidable troubles that life brings are just silly things getting in the way of laughs and love. Even if this was strictly a kids movie, what message is that for a kid?
    I went in this movie hoping for another great one, at the very least an entertaining film. What I got was lame jokes, bad acting (not from Bale he is the best), horrible storyline, and one of the worst (if not the worst) MCU movie I've ever seen. Taika Waititi has completely lost it, maybe it's the money and fame, but he is not a good writer.
    Serious question - Is there anyway the producers can make this movie just a bad dream where Thor wakes up, realizes life is hard, drops the silly-all-the-time attitude, and goes back to being the Mighty Thor?

    As a fan of Gorr in the comics I hated this movie , not just because they butchered Gorr but also because they ruined all the character building Thor had on previous movies, but this was a bad movie even if I didn't knew the comics , everything just happens there no logic to anything, they break pre established rule, plot macguffins all the time and if this wasn't enough it had a tone of exposition scenes.

    The first Thor is an underrated movie. It's a good character story with good/great character arcs. And it had a distinct style and feel, even if there were a little too many Dutch angles. And it gave us Loki, one of the best characters in the MCU. The Dark World is blah, but whatever. I loved Ragnarok and haven't seen this, so I'll pass judgment on this movie when I see it. I'd say the first Iron Man, Thor, and Capital America really are underrated for setting up the MCU. All those movies had distinct styles, tones, and directorial visions that were executed well. After the first Avengers (except for Guardians and Ragnarok) we got the MCU-mandated style. The MCU boilerplate style isn't always bad but is becoming a real problem with their Phase 4 movies.

That and Gorr was only corrupted on a physical scale, his villainous intent was his own decision as a character. Having Thor fight so hard to save people and be the God that Gore hoped existed was what changed his mind at the end. Not the sword being destroyed. The pacing of this movie was break-neck for me. Nothing has time to breath. Huge conflicting tone issues aswell yes. There was a actually a good story in here between Thor and Jane if they actually gave it time to breath and let it be serious. Their chemistry in this movie was decent imo. The love of his life is dying from cancer can he not be a bumbling dumbass for at least some of this movie? Also obviously plot-holes galore. Why didn't they just bifrost to the center of the universe immediately? Why didn't Thor snap ghorrs neck immediately once they get in and just wish for Jane to ba a-ok? The kid scene at the end was so silly. It's just so weird. Like this is a kids movie but also a love story between someone dying from cancer and a broken man. Like yeah no this was never going to be great.

    I am as close to heartbroken as one could be over how they handled Jane Foster's Might Thor. There's a version of this movie in more willing hands than Taika Watiti that could've made an exceptionally gripping story centered around Thor and Jane's reunion as well as her inevitable fate to the backdrop of the God Butcher threat. Instead, we got this lazily insulting film that continues to shred whatever's left of Thor's lore and credibility (comics and the MCU). So disappointing.

    Overall what I felt this movie handled well was the arc of Thor finally learning to grief and the relationship he had with Jane. What this movie felt short on were the other characters and their arcs. Gorr deserved more time than what he got especially when it came to his backstory. Valkyrie and Sif both felt like they're was more to their story that was cut off at the end. The movie has a bit to much Korg in it for me as well mainly because he is a flat character who doesn't offer any challenge to our main cast. The children felt unnecessary I'm sad to say. I like their interactions with Thor but the fact that they have an arc with payoff while Valkyrie doesn't leaves a bad taste in mouth. 6/10

    Infinity War was the first time I saw issues with Thor’s continuity. The whole point of Ragnarok was to show that Thor didn’t need the hammer to be the God he was supposed to be. Losing Mijlnor was a big hit to Thor’s self-esteem and he feels powerless without it. However, as Oden said, “did I make you the god of hammers or the god of thunder”? The hammer was just a tool. Just like Ironman’s armour is just a tool. It’s the man behind the tool that makes the hero. So what happens in the next film? Thor spends two thirds of the film trying to make a bigger hammer to defeat the bad guy. So all of Ragnarok kinda feels redundant, and if I’m being honest, a waste of time. Unfortunately, it seems neither Marvel or Waititi learnt from this and instead pile on more continuity issues with Thor.
    The problem with this is that characters never feel like they grow. Look at how much Thor has gone through since Thor 1. He has lost both his parents, his brother and his evil sister, his home and his people, half of the universe and yet all Thor can show for it is now he has become Marvel’s Homer Simpson. A once loveable and funny character that is now dangerously stupid at all times.

    • @MaxWelton
      @MaxWelton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Mjölnir helped Thor harness and control his innate power. Just because his hammer wasn’t his source of strength doesn’t mean a new weapon with similar properties would be useless. I agree that it’s awkward timing to have him accept not having his hammer only to be forced to make an axe, but I thought Infinity War made it clear that Stormbreaker made Thor stronger. He wouldn’t have been able to almost kill Thanos without it. That was the only attack that not only withstood the ENTIRE INFINITY GAUNTLET’S COUNTERMEASURE but kept moving as if ignoring the massive energy directed against it. So Thor’d be fine without a magic thunder weapon, but he needed a power boost in order to properly rematch Thanos.
