    Two things. CGI Tarkin was the best and most convincing CGI I've ever seen. To me, it looked exactly like him. Exactly. The CGI Leia looked a little fake.
    And Vader's final scene slaughtering fools in the hallway was fucking brilliant

      The sad thing is the possibility of seeing it again is dim considering this goes straight into episode 4 and Vader dies in episode 6. The only hope we have is if they make a prequel to this. How and what topic? Don't know. I can only see an Obi-Wan film with Vader vaguely in it in separate scenes.

      Living Lightning
      Well when Vader survived the destruction of the Death Star in his tie fighter he flew off into space. What did he do between that and Empire Strikes Back? They could make a side story about that.

      everything from the intense "we know who that is in the dark," to vader's first iconic inhalation in that scene, to when his red light saber lights up the hall way and reveals himself..... my goodness, i had to catch my breath during that scene.
      that one span of about half a minute alone had better suspense than most movies that are considered suspense. granted, i'm pretty sure the lore and pop culture behind the darth vader character had some help with that, but still.... epic

    "We would be honored if you would join us." Empire Strikes Back (After being shot at)

    "Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them." Jedi (Threatening "Lazy" workers)
    "The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am." Jedi (Underplaying his badassery)

    It was a much grittier star wars movie than others which were very friendly fantasy adventures, but this one felt like a war movie with a lot on the line if they failed their quest. There was a real sense of urgency in this rather than wonder.

      YES. That's what I hated about TFA, there were absolutely no stakes and it was just kinda boring because of that. The humor was overdone too. It felt like a Marvel movie, or pretty much anything else Disney touches. But Rogue One was beautifully done both cinematically and content wise.

      @@kennethha416 ...can't really speak for the person you're replying to, but considering I kind of agree, just wanted to defend the point. I think it's valid to feel like there were no stakes in TFA more than other star wars movies because it was kind of a retread. everything had already been done before, the third death star was a tired idea and it never felt like more than a movie after that shit came in, it never sucked me in and made me feel for what was happening. It just felt like going through the motions. I think what works in rogue one is that the stakes feel more personal, we know they're going to get the plans, but we don't know if they're going to be alright, so we end up caring about the people more than the fate of the universe, which is kinda what sucks me in usually. empire is the same way for me, the fact it doesn't have to resolve and can end on a cliffhanger, it let the writers kind of make the stakes more personal. We end up caring about what's going to happen to han by the end of it, and I think caring about the characters, the people, is really the stakes that are more engaging to watch. I agree that the big ending of the original star wars is more for fun than like really thinking the good guys won't win, but it hadn't been done before and was a wild ride. I don't really like return of the Jedi because it's a retread, I end up not caring about the death star in that move either, has that same going through the motions kinda shit, but then again, they have the Darth Vader luke drama which is pretty engaging so it's kind of alright. The personal stakes are clearer to me. I don't even remember why the characters are fighting at the end of TFA, I don't give a shit about the death star, and the fact Kylo Ren gets his ass beat probably blew the feeling of tension also. Long story short, the more personal the drama the more feels at stake, once you care about the characters, it's like even shit that doesn't kill them starts to hold weight, like you just want them to be ok. I didn't ever feel like any of the characters wouldn't be ok in a lot of the star wars movies, episode 3 was ok at it, but a lot of them just felt like, get on with it, I know Anakin's not gonna die in a bug factory or whatever, can we just go. I wouldn't say there wasn't any stakes in the star wars movies though, they did the personal stakes alright sometimes

      Rogue One also had really good potentially and some really cool ideas, but didn't deliver on them and they fell short (i.e. the Vader scene could have been amazing if he was killing the main characters, but instead they gave them unmemorable deaths and had Vader murder a bunch of rebels that we didn't care about).
      The Force Awakens had awesome potential and ideas and fucking delivered on them big time!

    Vader in this film was like a monster straight out of a horror film. Even his intro, when he's in the tube, was unsettling. He's just hanging there, limbless, with that iconic breath. And that scene near the end was like something out of a Jason film.
    But boy, seeing Red Leader and Gold Leader again was amazing, and totally unexpected. Probably some of the best use of stock footage I have ever seen. All the main characters dying was really unexpected as well. I don't know if I liked it as much as Jeremy did, but I really did enjoy it, and was at the edge of my seat through most of it.

    The Force Awakens didn't have the same flaw as the original Death Star. Han, and Chew placed charges which caused damage from within creating a hole for Poe Dameron to fly through. Once inside he was able to blast the interior destroying Starkiller Base. Because if we all remember, before the hole was created, they were bombing the surface of the weapon which had little to no effect.

    • @archibaldsenpai8862

      but it was still a single spot on this planet sized entity which could destroy the whole thing, shielded maybe but still a huge vulnerability

    • @FolkLordll
      @FolkLordll 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You shove TNT down the barrel of a tank and it's going to do some damage. The point I'm making is that Jeremy stated that Starkiller Base had the same flaw built into it as the Death Star did, and he asked who made that one. I was making the point that the same flaw was not made into Starkiller Base and the Empire did learn from their mistakes. The only reason Han and Chewie made it through Starkiller Bases shields is because they were in light speed.

    • @TX51
      @TX51 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sure that if i put some TNT in to the Earth's core it wouldn't blow up the Earth... or if i used said TNT and a nuke it still won't blow up the Earth. There isn't a lot of chain reactions that could destroy the Earth in one go. So, really there is a a huge design flew in Starkiller base. The more i think about TFA the more it just pisses me off. It's was a fun movie but its also fanboy ass.

    • @FolkLordll
      @FolkLordll 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TX51 You're comparing the earths core to a structure that isn't a planet at all, that harnesses the power of stars and is waiting to discharge all that stored energy, so when someone punches a hole in that seal and it explodes, you're saying that's the same as if we dug to the center of the earths core? You do realize how dumb that sounds right?

    • @TX51
      @TX51 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FolkLordll Yes, I do want to compare the two as this is a fictional situation and it completely stupid from the get go. I'll humour you though. if e=mc2 then all the mass stored in the starkiller base must be equal to its power out put... if so, it shouldn't be to hard to believe that there is enough mass in the earth's core to destroy a planet. the only difference is that in star wars they have found a way to turn all that mass in to energy. so, yes it is the same. I'm not stupid.

    No, I think the mind squid was necessary. The mind squid was Rogue One's version of waterboarding. It was torturous, terrifying, and disturbing. It left the pilot in an utter state of shock and fear, despite his willingness to actually be so forthcoming with information. It said alot about Guerrera's clan without saying much at all.
    Rogue One was GREY. It was a gritty grey film that tried to show the horrors of war from a Star Wars standpoint. The overarching theme was supposed to be that Rebel and Empire were no different in terms of goals.
    Remember "You carry a prison wherever you go"? That was, to an extent, referring to the cage of aligning with a FACTION in a galactic war, and the consequences of bearing the weight of that faction and what it does to you individually.
    The happy melodic Star Wars music, nostalgic as it was, had a habit of clashing with that dark theme of "There is no good and bad in war", and honestly that is Disney's fault as the original Rogue One was supposed to be much more darker and grittier, but they decided to scrap that because it was deemed too much by Mickey Mouse and his cohorts.

    Allow me to put on my nerd glasses while I explain the Starkiller base. The only reason that the thermal oscillator was vulnerable is because the station was charging from the power of the sun. The oscillator modulates the energy (with sci-fi magic) so that the storage of that energy doesn't pop the Starkiller like a balloon. When they destroyed the oscillator, the energy couldn't be modulated and the base was destroyed by the energy currently being stored. Had they destroyed the oscillator while the Starkiller was just chilling in space it would not have destroyed the base

      K2-S0's death wasn't from an explosion....it was from getting shot tons of times...Thats why I think his death is the best one.

      Best Star Wars scene, period.
      Up until now this was Luke almost falling to the dark side in RotJ for me, but Slasher Vader takes the number one spot easily.

    You had me going with the Starkiller base point at first, but you gotta remember: That thing WAS protected; the crew of the Falcon coerced Capt. Phasma to shut down the shield generator. But the First Order had a failsafe, which was conveniently and clumsily sidestepped by the crew of the Falcon just happening to have a bag of explosives.
    Those explosives did a LOT of damage, but really only enough for one single X-Wing to go in, and circle around blowing the shit out of multiple fuses, etc.
    I dunno, in my opinion, I felt The Force Awakens went out of its way to show how fucked the Resistance was going into that assault.
    Does it explain Return of the Jedi's Death Star's weakness?

      I love Vader's Pun, by the way. I'm hearing that's not very in-character for him, but I think it helps to bridge the gap between the two trilogies as well. Vader has always used puns, he just got better at them. Perks of the Dark Side exposure, I guess.... wit,.
      "Oh, you know, Master... I couldn't find a speeder that I really liked, in the right color with the best speed capabilities and all..."
      "I have the high ground, Anakin!"
      "Don't... UNDERestimate my power!"
      "Don't choke on your aspirations."
      "Apology accepted, Captain Needa."
      And don't forget, when Han was being interrogated: "They didn't even ask any questions." Vader was just fuckin' with him!

    I think you hit the nail on the head here Jeremy, just don't go on excusing yourself so much for your verdict in your non-spoiler talk! This movie was in my opinion amazing. It had so many nods to the originals, and like you said sewed together so many story lines perfectly. I've never been so excited watching a Star Wars film, as I was during this because it was like having gift after gift unwrapped before your eyes. Characters that we haven't seen in years were once more back on the screen (loved that they re-made Grand Moff Tarkin), and the way the props, settings, and characters looked in this film was on point with the originals. This film really looked and felt like a true Star Wars movie and in my opinion was one of the best in the entire series. That, taking into account that it was made so long after the originals is an incredible feat, and I was so impressed by this film from beginning to end.

    I feel like that one scene where K-2SO says "I've got a bad fe-" then the characters shut him up is just the movie making fun of the other prequels for overusing the "I've got a bad feeling about this" line

    • @ImDeluxeSP33some

    I think the mind squid thing was supposed to be showing that Saw would go to drastic measures to get the info and I think it was supposed to mirror the imperial interrogation droid the Vader uses on Princess Leia. Thusly, "The rebels are just as bad as the empire!"
    I don't think any of the "grey area" stuff worked in the film, though.

    • @TenraiGudo
      @TenraiGudo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review. I love what this movie does for A New Hope. Makes it so much more emotional. You see Vader differently, you see R2 with the plans differently. And when Luke blows up the Death Star, it's like got this amazingly satisfying feeling of revenge for what Tarkin & Co did to our heroes in Rogue One. I love it!

    The way the movie smoothed out some of the rough edges of the original trilogy alone makes it fantastic. It ties it with the series even though it is a stand alone "spin-off" and does it better than all the winks and call backs in the Force Awakens. Unlike the other prequels it really feels like it enriches the New Hope, it makes some of the scenes in it stronger and make more sense.
