My biggest issue was that Thor and Gor's motives didn't logically make them enemies. Gor wanted to punish the gods for not doing anything for their people when needed, and accomplishes this by kidnapping Thor's people knowing he'd come to rescue them? Isn't that self contradictory?
When Gor was talking to Thor, I was just waiting for Thor to say something along the lines of: "I'm not like those lazy indulgent morons, I'm here aren't I? I mean, I get why you want to kill them, I killed their leader on my way here after trying to rely on him for like, 5 minutes."
I also think the whole theme of the movie was undermined by Gor right. They clearly showed that none of the gods had any redeeming qualities at all (other than the Asgardians). This could've been so much better if Gor's initial god was somehow justified - such as being distracted battling the prior owner of the necrosword. You can keep Zeus from getting involved by having him be preoccupied fulfilling Odin's duties on top of his own and not considering Gor a real threat.
The whole thing with Eternity also felt lazy. Thor managed to get there in a few minutes, even without using the bifrost to travel, yet we're meant to believe nobody else could ever get there? Then Jane managed to get there just as quickly using yet another means of transport.

I didn't hate it but they needed to make Gorr as strong as he should have been carrying the Necrosword Gorr stronger than Thanos in many ways, Thanos without the gauntlet of course. The whole movie needed another 45min or made it a two parter so they could incorperate the serriousness of Gorr trying to get to Eternity because where they got to in the movie, finding the entrance was far too under sold, and is not meant to be known by just anyone. Gorr the god butcher should not have been defeated in a 10 minuet battle either. Destroying the Necrosword and letting Gorr defeat himself/regain his soul was the best ending they could have went for because if they just had the Thors kill him it would have completly undersold the Necrosword haha which kinda happen anyway but atleast this way they could introduce "Lady Love" or just "Love" either way making the movie as short as it was cost it the most in my opinion the story line was great but just heavily under played in severity because if Gorr gets his "all gods must die" wish granted that's a far worse outcome then the Thanos snap. In saying all that the movie didn't ruin my day i'll say that much haha.

Then when Jane came back to help, it would be much more sad and serious. Seeing more Gorr would be good too. I would have loved to see Gorr go to that planet Omnipotent and just start causing chaos. Also I just would have liked to see Gorr, see that Thor was different. Thor literally lost everything. He lost his father, mother, brother, sister(the sister was a psychopath too, wouldn’t be nice to have for a sister), and now his ex who he still loves very much. Connecting Thor with Gorr on an emotional would’ve been good for building character. We could see just how angry and heart broken Gorr really is.

Agreed, I was thinking that too watching the film. I kept expect Gorr to smash through the roof of Omnipotent City with millions of Necro soldiers! Thor and gang barely escape, Zeus get serious and becomes a Golden Giant but is overwhelmed and Gorr defeats him. Hell, even the stupid scene with the Celestials poking their heads into the window comically...Lord, help me! I sunk deeper into my seat when I saw them emerge looking dumbfounded. Lie...why were they even there? They're not Gods--they're God-like but not Gods. I would think joining a pantheon of Old time Gods would be below them. Lmao! How about that same scene, where the Gods are fighting and dying, the Celestials (for whatever reason) appear and get wasted by Gorr? Then he goes after Thor and company after he doesn't see their bodies amongst the dead Gods (who didn't escape too). Yes?

I actually took a day off from work to watch the 1st showing. Unfortunately, I was highly disappointed. It had no character development and poor dialogue. The constant jokes felt ad-libbed and most of them fell flat, all while undercutting a lot of the serious moments. Not a single character stood out, including Valkyrie, who seems sidelined through the movie but especially Gorr, who was tame compared to a villain like Stranger Things’ Vecna , who also controlled tentacles.
It was like Taititi smoked weed and did shrooms while he directed, cuz the movie was all over the place while not really going anywhere. Sure, there were some decent moments here and there, but they few and far between.
Sadly, the movie as a whole was nowhere near the level of fun of Ragnarok. This, along with most of the Disney+ shows, and even MoM, makes it seem like the MCU lost its mojo after Endgame and No Way Home... and Shang Chi till the CGI-fest ending.

Compared to Ragnarok yes this movie is inferior simply because Thor was far more grounded in that then in this. I do agree with many points here however the biggest issue is the runtime of the film. At just under two hours there is a clear sign of negligence with building stakes and character development to fully flesh out the characters. Unfortunately the studio is obsessed with opening weekend scores, repeat viewings, how many screens can they fill within a certain time frame in order to break bank. L&T is a victim of such exploitation.
The film needed to be longer but they would rather sell a “movie” equipped with enough gags, action, romance and generic storytelling that entertains the senses, wrapping everything up conveniently just to promote the next attraction.

I’ve seen a few interviews where they say something like “it’s like a kid asked for all kinds of weird things, and we said yes to everything” and that really shows. I find the scenes where they travel to omnipotence city, unnecessary because the only thing it was actually used for to bring the story forward was for them to get the thunderbolt so travelling around the universe was still possible without Stormbreaker. Had Gorr actually appeared after Zeus talking about Thor being used to find the city would have been great. I do get that it can important to showcase the fact that Thor is not scared like the other gods and to showcase who they are fighting for, but it felt to useless and too much like it was just kids that wanted all kinds of gods there like the god of dumplings just to get laughs

    • @Crabgar
      @Crabgar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Good way of saying it, although the love stuff doesn't quite fit. It's more like a studio asked for things kids would like, like the extremely funny screaming goats, the sentient weapons and the extremely funny screaming child army. The rest was for adults watching the movie with their kids.
I also thought that Gorr would appear and kill Zeus and Thor doing it is a a weird move. It feels like it was just there to push the plot and the sequel. The entire city doesn't make sense. Why are any of the gods there instead of their home? Why would Zeus be the most ancient, powerful one? What even is a god?
i also just didn't like a lot of the scenes. Thor being more concerned with mjolnir than the safety of new asgard, the guardians coming to Thor because there were like 30 bird people with guns, even the eternity scene. First they let Gorr slowly crawl into the portal, after which i thought they were going to save Jane (but hoped they would let her die) and then Thor and the girl just awkwardly stared at eachother. i was really hoping this would be a possible ending for Thor, no longer an avenger, a warrior, a guardian, a lover or even a god, just a father. But no. Extremerly funny sassy child with superpowers. Again.

Another thing is how much unnecessary humor there is which never makes stakes actually feel real and dangerous. Just watched it earlier and the movie felt underwhelming for me with quite a few problems.
While the creepy scene that Gorr trapped the trio and threatened Thor to call stormbreaker left the most impression on me in the entire film, I felt like it should have had more of an impact on Valkyrie. The way she was reminded of her trauma about Odin ordering the whole valkryie squad to fight Hela was devastating but all that were seemingly just gone after that scene.
Also, while Christian definitely did an amazing job as Gorr, what is the motive of Gorr just bringing the children and walk inside the temple together? There is wasted potential there with the children fighting back against Gorr himself and Gorr not willing to fight them since they remind him of her daughter etc.
Moving on, Gorr making his wish to eternity at the end of the film was a weak move for me. While it reflected the shots in the start of the film, you are telling me that Gorr, who literally wanted to butcher all the gods because they ignored his prayers and let her daughter die is now praying (again) to this higher tier entity and expecting something from this guy? Seriously?

I also feel like Sif's character could've been more dug up. She was absent from the MCU for a decade now and the Taika totally did not respect her. She has barely ten seconds of screentime and in these poor seconds, her arm gets cut off. She was so underrated in this movie. In the comics, she plays a much more important role, and even in mythology. It is really unfair for her character as her character could've been really promising. I hope we will see more of her in future movies and see the character finally develop more.
Example: She could be Valkyries' queen.

Now, I loved it at first but after re-thinking it, Love and Thunder could have Been done better. And the fact that there is a 4 Hour Cut Out there, meaning they cut out 2 hours of the movie, including multiple scenes of Gorr killing beings such as The Grand Master which is really disappointing Because Bale carried the movie as Gorr.
Ragnarök was the perfect level of Taika-ness, but L&T is just over the top to the point that they make their own characters seem stupid. Like Sif, one of the Legendary Asgardian’ doesn’t even know the rules of Being able to get into Valhalla. It’s just stupid.
And at one point (Spoilers) Zeus Seems to take Gorr seriously by saying “Yeah dude I’m terrified of him but stop bringing his name up because it will start to cause a panic among the gods.” And at this point in the movie I thought it was going to take a serious turn because even Zeus is scared but nope, right back to being over the top.

Personally I think the mcu is going to big in scale, as the first avengers movie was only the sixth installment to the mcu, so only five projects to set up a villain and it was loved and the same goes for phase two and three. But for phase four we've had seven shows and five movies with no penultimate movie in sight bringing these characters together. This just makes the mcu feel very cluttered. What also impacts it's quality is having so many installment that it just feels like there trying to cram in as much filler as possible so they can have as many big characters in phase four as possible to get the biggest pay off, but many will agree that a good payoff will not redeem the mediocre beginning and middle of a project. This is just my opinion and I am personally enjoying a lot of phase four projects (Loki,Thor 4,Schang Chi, Moon knight and No Way Home to name a few) but I do think that their biting off a bit more than they can chew with this amount of projects with no penultimate movie in sight.

He doesn’t even have to kill all of them, make it so he arrives after Thor leaves (so he missed stormbreaker) and in his rage he butchers some before taking his leave

also I think that his sword was destroyed to easily. They could make the sword a personality of its own. They could make a scene where the sword make him continue although he dont want this because deep inside he is still a good man. That would also explain why he turned in the last second. I would prefer this movie to take a darker tone, maybe even horror like dr. strange.

When Thanos stepped on the scene, you really had this weird feeling of dread. Hero’s died, hero’s lost. It was all so uncertain. But now we’ve been introduced to Kang the Conqueror, the Scarlet Witch, technically Evil Strange/Ultron/Killmonger, and now the God Butcher. Thanos feels like such a fairytale now. These OP villains are coming out the wood work and getting absolutely slammed.

I thought that the characterization was actually pretty damn good, but I agree with the pacing problem. In that regard, I have to question if the bigger problem over script issues in just cut content, because I loved MoM but it had some fun cameos and context bits cut out that I admit would have improved the movie. But really, the only serious problem I have is the with the wish plotline. Like they never specify the rules of it. Theres a tax to using the Infinity Stones and everyone who used them in the movies had a discrete and specific goal. Gor wants to wish for the death of every God, but he apparently can't wish for him and his daughter to be alive at the same time, like for some reason he can't just "I wish me and my daughter lived a long and healthy life."
But I like that Thor becomes a foster father at the end, overall his particular brand of humor was 100% dad worthy, and the struggle of proving himself worthy as a protector god mirrors the story of being a father, which makes Gor a good foil to Thor. Its even exemplified by having Thor bequeath his power to all of the kids, its not just a funny moment, its him assuming the role of both a God AND and father, like Odin before him (who coincidentally also took in the child of an enemy) But at the same time, it does sort of feel like they used Gor and this movie as a whole just as a jumping off point, and while it is definitely a meme that every Marvel title is just a series of lead in to the next title, but it deserves some autonomy.

Completely agree with this. I was really having high hopes for this movie.. atleast how finally after killing Thanos Thor started a new life with the team. But then this movie took away another person Thor loved and ended with no progress in the arc..atleast hoped that by the end of the movie..all the events that happened would take a serious and really different turn. But totally disappointed how it just handed us 'love' born from eternity and just like that Jane died. End of story. Didn't feel the terror of Gorr, didn't feel the pain for Jane, didn't feel the gravity of the situation and the didn't really feel the Gods needed to be saved. Plus the plot holes..like seriously..from hospital bed to the fighting scene. When did it became so easy to reach the temple of eternity.

I also felt that Love and Thunder had the same problem as Multiverse of Madness where I just didn't feel like there was any payoff for the god butcher to trust Thor, a god, to watch after his daughter after hating gods for so long. In multiverse of madness, I don't understand why America Chavez trusted Doctor Strange and told Christine that this Doctor Strange was different.

Keep in mind that the necrosword was destroyed and Gorr began returning to his normal self. When Thor tells Gorr that he can bring his daughter back, it snaps him back to reality instead of being blinded by rage. When Gorr sees Thor holding Jane who’s dying, it reminds him off the loss he felt when he held his dying daughter and he probably feels sympathy for Thor. I would say that he trusts Thor because his message of “choose love” makes him realise that maybe Thor is different and he does care for others. Thor is demonstrating that he understands what it means to do the right thing and that means a lot to Gorr. He also is giving Thor another chance at love by trusting him with his daughter, I think it’s poetic and I liked the ending

    • @Lou.D
      @Lou.D 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

As for America Chavez trusting Doctor Strange, I think it’s pretty clear that he is different from what she’s seen of him. He spent the whole time protecting her

    • @andrewl2737
      @andrewl2737 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Lou.D I mean the necrosword chose Gorr because of his hate toward the god that refused to help him which manifested in his goal to kill all gods after he got the necrosword. The necrosword being destroyed, doesn't remove his own hate for gods and how mortal being are treated like crap by the gods especially after the many years he spent butchering gods. I don't see how Thor was different than any other god Gorr killed because according to Thor himself, he knew many of the gods that were killed that were innocent and decent gods. I'm sure all those gods did their best to fend off the Gorr from the people they were suppose to be protecting. Gorr had no reason to believe Thor was any different from any other god because we didn't see them develop any kind of connection so there was no reason for Gorr to trust basically a stranger, who is also a god to look after his daughter. So there was no payoff and in my option the choice Gorr made to bring his daughter back and trusting Thor to take care of her instead of killing all the gods didn't feel poetic. What would have been poetic is having Those win the battle like he did, and he made the wish with Eternity and instead of choosing to save Jane, bring back Gorr's daughter which would have shown to Gorr in his last dying moments that Thor was different and could trust Thor to look after his daughter.
Then with America Chavez, I don't see how Doctor Strange was different from the other Doctor Strange's. The Doctor Strange with the pony tail also protected her until there was no other choice. I don't see a difference between the protection between the two Doctor Strange's because pony tail doctor strange fought with everything he had to protect her. The only reason why the current Doctor Strange didn't make the same choice is because he already saw that betrayal happen and knew that doing something like that wouldn't work. Otherwise he would have made the same choice. There's was very little relationship building between Doctor Strange and America Chavez just like Thor and Gorr. The only close moment they had was when they saw each other's memories and that shouldn't have changed anything because America already knew about Christine from the other universe. Ultimately there wasn't much down to be different for America to tell red head Christine that this Doctor Strange was different. America even realized that the past Doctor Strange was right and was willing to give up her powers to the current Doctor Strange. Then the writers got lazy and America Chavez gained the ability to control her powers because of a motivational speech from basically a stranger telling her to trust herself.

Couple of things that could have made this movie a lot better.
One, they could have added more screen time on the adventures of the asguardians of the galaxy like the opening sequence of gotg vol 2
Two, more screen time to gorr to establish how powerfull of a villan he truly is
Three, interrogation and possibly the death of etri and assault on omnipotence city and the introduction of the prince of power, here he goes on an assault on the God hive looking for the key to the heart of eternity and in the process mortally wounds zeus to whom he offers a deal the weapons location in exchange for his life and the mighty zeus agrees. Gorr proceeds to show zeus his vison about the key to bifrost, at this moment it is revealed by zeus that the weapons is of asguardian origin proceeds to tell him the location of the weapon "nivadeller" Gorr revokes his word and drives the sword through zeus heart and is interrupted by hercules having got what he needed he leaves without engaging the prince of power. Unknown to gorr zeus lied to him about the location of stormbreaker and in his final moments, he tells his son to find thor odinson and to avenge them before dying he hints about eternity. Hercules perceives thor as the enemy to have caused all this.
Fourth, Thor and the others reaches omnipotence city and isbl faced by an angry hercules looking for revenge for his father and his home. They fight and later convinces hercules that the gorr has kinnapped asgardian children is the real enemy and they have to stop him unknown to them is that's exactly what God butcher wants. They gets captured and gorr reveals that he killed etri but not before he revealed the location of stormbreaker and later spared sif's life knowing she'll alert thor and bring him back to New asgard boom! fight sequence again.
And the last but certainly not the least,
Both thor and hercules are overwhelmed by the army gorr has raised and hercules engages gorr thor grants the children his powers.
Both thor and hercules engage gorr but eventually loses to him with hercules getting cut with the necrosword and entry the mighty thor, together the trio fight gorr, thor frees stormbreaker enchants it and activates the bifrost remotely like heimdall did with hulk in infinity war. At this moment we can see thor with stormbreaker, hercules with thunderbolt and Jane with mjolnir they fight again this time destroying the necrosword together and the shards of the necrosword mortally wounds both thor and hercules as they where in the close proximity and as the shards slowly kills them, gorr manages to reform the sword using mjolnir. At this moment Jane channels all of her might and destroys mjlonir once again utterly destroying the necrosword which saves both thor and hercules from their imminent demise.

This would actually be a good change and adaptation from the comics. In the comics Gorr fights three different Thors and it shows his level of power. This would be similar to that but with effectively three Thor level people and very Thor like.
Personally, it’s okay to adapt things differently from the comics but not to the point of ridiculousness. This Thor film was what the Japanese Spider-Man Tv show is to Spider-Man comics. Their barely the same character.
I think we can change things to make more sense in the cinematic universe but we can’t outright just change everything to the point of it being something completely different all because “it’s an adaptation and we should let the director follow their vision” the director also has a duty to the character and stories which are not truly his in this instance.
The Gorr comics are probably one of the most adaptable and interesting for film imo. Unfortunately the character and it’s story may have been too dark and serious for Taika to take seriously. He basically made fun of the character by calling him alien Voldemort and the way he portrayed him.
I really think he should’ve just picked a different villain.
I really wish that maybe Nolan or Villenueve got to direct this particular Thor story. I really hope one day they can re-make this Thor film with one of those two directors who are great are dark and serious themes. I don’t care if it’s a one off that’s separate from the MCU. I just want to see Gorr actually taken seriously and shown off.

It's entirely possible that this location would have only been known to Gods.
That's just my idea for how it could possibly make sense
Of course it could also be that they didn't think it through

Thank you for being very honest ! I always recommend my friends to watch your breakdown videos. *Sometimes, I even show off that I know so many easter eggs and hidden details*

Very nice review. I love comedy but there are a few times were I thought we were closer to Spaceball to an actual Marvel movie. There are some good parts. I think the ending is brilliant for example. The main vilain wanted god to care and take on their responsability.
By asking Thor to raise Love he achieved exactly that, Thor is now responsible for his daughter and I find it is a very clever way to bind a god down and preventing Thor from being selfish like the gods in the beginning. At least there will be one god that will care. :)
And for Thor, it provides a purpose. Very clever.

The third reason bothered me while watching the movie too. Dude just lost Stormbreaker to Gorr but was chilling with Jane.
But the one like the Thor being both serious and sarcastic at the same time worked out for me. It was fun to see Thor in the Ragnarok style, and didn't feel repetitive for me.
As much as I like the movie, I would definitely agree that Gorr had less screentime. Though his character development was good, it wasn't enough.
Overall the movie was good. Not the best out there, and not definitely topping Ragnarok, but is still better than a few other MCU movies. It always had the ups and downs so just keep patience 😉😉

I feel like there needs to be a sense of cohesion in terms of tone not just within a movie but across projects going forward, directors are just going for their own feel based on what worked in the past
