Sequelitis - Mega Man Classic vs. Mega Man X

- Mega Man was a game that was so simple and yet so ahead of its time. It defined an entire genre and continues to be considered one of the best titles in video gaming history. But, does its spin-off sequel, Mega Man X fair so well?
I remember back when I entered college to study game design, and the professor chose this video to teach us about Basic Game Design.
Praise the professor whos a god lol
lucky
Your professor is cultured
@STRONG BIG It's not that he lacks the confidence to continue this series or that he doesn't know it was important, he just doesn't want to make this type of content anymore. It doesn't interest him. And there's nothing wrong with that. If it doesn't fulfill him and if his artistic expression doesn't bring him to make these types of videos, then he shouldn't make them.
@@ladisgust I see what you mean. Like why would I want to watch a video he half assed just to appease the masses? If there's no passion put in a creation it's no longer a work of art. Its a cash grab and it doesn't really appease anybody
To recap:
Megaman X is the best game ever because
1. The intro stage
2. Movement
3. Nggffffffffffff
Well I mean just from watching the video he listed:
1. Graphical improvement from NES Mega Man to the pixel art in Mega Man X
2. Very smart mechanical communication (in movement, attacking, enemies, platforming, optional collectibles, etc)
3. Intro Stage does a fantastic job in laying the structure for the entire game
4. Motivation (mainly mechanically, unless you *really* care about the narrative, all the power to you) very early on to progress and master the game
5. Great Level design in general
And so on. I’m pretty sure he meant to only share about conveying to the player what the game is, it’s mechanics, and why you should keep playing, all while not forcing it. Plus, this was partially satirical, not entirely informative; he made a funny video that also talks about his favorite game.
Rock hard dicks
@@aquano1972 but it is very informative, if you think about game design, he really understands the problems and the solutions that could have applied

Seriously. Me, and my friends were just reminiscing about we used to sweat our balls off, listening to this in middle of the summer while playing chess. Good ol' days. Arin is just too damn funny.

Where did he say this?
@@Jacquelinsane probably in one of his reaction videos to the grumps playing his Mario Maker World
I assume it’s cause he’s gotta do commentary with Dan while he’s playing, but yeah still pretty true
The best example to describe how Arin plays games is a puzzle game he did where you had to do the opposite of the rules. The rule said "be careful" inna room full of vases which obviously meant you needed to break the vases. Arin immediately broke them all and then went "I wonder what that rule meant." It's like his subconscious picks up on good game design even when he doesn't realize it.
thats really not obvious at all lmao. Its video gamer instinct to break all the vases and boxes in a game when you see them.
Dear Sequelitis,
It's been 4 years, but not a day goes by that I don't think about you. I know we never really got a proper goodbye, but that doesn't change how I feel about you, and nothing ever will. My pipe dream of a hope is that, someday somehow, you'll find your way back to me and we can be happy again, even if only for a moment. But whatever happens, I'll treasure the moments we've had as we both go forward to something better.
Love,

holy shit already 4 years since the Legend of Zelda video ..well that kinda felt like a goodbye for sequelitis, specially for how busy he was at the time (starbomb in the making, the show and they started planning the shows and all).

@Weston Thomas The video was him praising the games for not having "MEGA MAN MEGA MAN" moments. It is ironic because X5 starts a trend where all of the future games have those moments.

It has given me countless friends, ideas, and life achievements, and I want to personally thank you, it means more than you could ever know ❤

@@teknodice Now, why would u dothat
My dude, it's these videos that just seriously spoke to me. Taught me things normal game design courses rarely could. Plus, introduced me to more games than I probably would've known if I hadn't watched it!
Can u give me some experience ?an advice
I come back to watch this from time to time, just because of how good the video is, I haven't played a megaman in years either.
6 days later, I'm doing the same thing. I must have watched this video at least 5 times. Once every couple years. It never doesn't put me in a better mood
I just got an emulator device from a secret Santa party and Megaman X was the FIRST thing I played due to this video. Ego is spot on about how awesome Megaman X is
Yeah, same, but this does come with the issue of it making it that much more grating when the Gamegrumps incarnation of the dude intentionally acts like he's one of those people the obnoxious tutorials were made for instead of a normal person.
It's like dude, please just stop. We know you're not really *that* dumb and the bit is just kinda obnoxious
I'm back to watch this once in awhile as well. I miss this series.
I havent even played any of the games in the sequalitis series but I loved egoraptor as a kid. Can't believe this video is that old 🥲
I still come back to watch this video every so often. It's that good.
OMG YES I LOVE THIS VID!
Same, probably watched it ten times
Same, no school like old school 😎🙌
I watched this video like 10 years ago and then I forgot about it. Today I ran into a recent Egoraptor video because it was recommended and I thought "Egoraptor? Why does that sound familiar" so I started digging into his channel and BAM Sequelitis. It's like a dusty forgotten old chest in my mind opened suddenly I was rushed by memories.
I've seen some people accuse Arin of lying when he said this gets showed in some game design classes. I didn't think he was lying but I thought maybe it was only s few classes. I was wrong. My friend takes a game design class and not only did they watch this in class, they watched the whole sequelitis series, had a quiz based on them and had to write their own where they compared a good sequel of their choice to the original and one where they compared a bad one of their choice to the original. I was very jealous.
OMFG IM JEALOUS TOO
This should be totally shown in every game design course. The whole series.
I can confirm this is shown in actual game design classes being a student of game design myself it was shown the first two days of class to show us a good example of someone thinking objectively
Wow. This is actually really fucking cool.
They showed a video in school of a dude talking about MMX and MM Classic while saying fuck a lot? I'm so jealous.
9 years. This is almost 9 years old. Egoraptor, make more.

@@tedscott3635 Yes, I know Game Grumps exists. I said this. As in more Sequilitis.

Holy crap, it's almost been 10 years.

@@blackghostcat I hope so! There are some great examples of games that do this fairly recently (Breath of the Wild and Hollow Knight come to mind). But yeah, I come back to this video all the time, the principle it teaches is one of the most useful things I try to keep in mind as a designer.
What projects are you working on?
@@alexchacon778 You should know however that if you actually ever meet someone in real-life like Arin, they're a lost cause.
Modern games should have an "I've played video games before" option that skips the stupid intro part that tells you that you need to push A to jump or some shit.
Developers feel the need to include a tutorial because they think they might have added an element to their game that's alien to usual game mechanics.
Having the option to skip tutorials would be nice to get right into the game, but wouldn't it be annoying to be hindered in a game because there was something you didn't know from the developer's tutorial?
Well yeah, for that, a tutorial would be pretty useful, but for people that have played the game and understand the mechanic, it could still be nice.
Games that don't add any mechanics like that and _still_ give a dumb tutorial really don't have much of an excuse, though.

This is probably one of the videos he enjoyed making the most. He's just so excited and fond of everything he's talking about.
Of course it is; did you not hear him state how rock hard the game makes him? He could sing the praises of MegaMan X until he's blue in the face, and still not lose that enthusiasm.
Remember when we all thought Arin was being hyperbolic about a player not understanding anything about the game they are playing in the opening stage.
And after 7 years of game grumps we now realize that that is just how Arin approaches games.
You'd think, but it's really just a persona, which is the real reason why it's so grating. You think you're irritated because "he doesn't get it and should" but deep down, it's really because "you *know* he gets it and is feigning stupidity since he thinks that's what gets him views"
@@InfernosReaper it absolutely doesn't. its not even that popular of a topic surrounding game grumps, people watch them because of the presence theyve built over the years in making lets plays.
the real thing that probably attracts new audiences is all the fan animations honestly. I guess in that regard, arin and dan having bombastic reactions can feed into those being made, but they can already have plenty of that by just... reacting to the games they're playing. annoying people by being obtuse and ignoring telegraphing _every time he plays a game_ only sounds like a way to get people to click off if anything. At best it makes people like me want to talk about game grumps if only for a moment, but thats not how you retain viewers, and thats not how you inspire fan artists.
the only conclusion that leads me to draw is either that arin is as dense as he acts on camera when playing games by himself, or he just doesn't care anymore.
@@dandyspacedandy I mean, here, we have clear proof that he's *not* that dense, unless some incident happened that caused him to have brain damage that no one on the channel ever mentioned.
Otherwise, the only conclusion is that he started acting over the top for moments that could be memed and to try to bounce off his counterpart, but gradually flanderized that persona into the realm of overly obnoxious.
What keeps people coming is the fact that he's not the only one on the channel and the Grumps doing videos on things people actually want to see.
That aside, when was the last time they had something on the level of Racist Bassist or Sad Hoshi?

First law of UX design: Never assume that users are idiots, but never forget that they are.
To be fair, Arin actually does quite well with games with less intrusive tutorials like Bloodborne or Dark Souls. He seems to really excel at games where the information is conveyed in ways that don't feel like tutorials.
I absolutely love the tiny, miniscule detail near the end of his gush where he's explaining the health pickups right before Sigma and just as he says it'll fill your subtanks in like a second, he had the mind to throw in a little thumb snap. Really shows how much he went over his video during editing. That's some real dedication. I miss this old Arin.
it's a shame he stopped making these sequelitis vids. they were so good.
Ramon Sandoval He's working on the next one... takes time to get the animation done, and the gameplay footage
I believe he does these by himself
I hope he makes another one, but I hope he doesn't do it just because people want him to. When you try to force "sequels" to content that you originally created out of your own passion and amusement, it never goes well. Just look at Hollywood.

Well so can Maverick Hunter X being as it basically removes everything he praised about X. For example, you actually have to defeat Vile at the start and then he cheap-shots you in a cutscene, which means your quest is to become strong enough to defeat someone you could beat up already.
his comedic timing and timing in this video is still some of the best of youtube even ten years later. Such a classic video just epic
There is one thing you forgot to mention. When you attack the Mavericks with the weapon that they are weakest against, it does more than damage them more, it also fucks up their attack patterns. Like when you hit Spark Mandrill with the shotgun ice. It freezes him and he has to break out.

Waiting for screen transitions to build expectation for bossfight = ok.
Waiting to open chests to build expectation for item about to be received = not ok.
It is a little stubborn (and likely a little nostalgia) since both involve waiting, but the Mega Man X transitions don't take forever and they let you know that the boss fight is here, which is good so you can take a small break in the room before the final boss to prepare yourself, allowing for a more immersive experience with the game.
In Ocarina of Time, you have been waiting the whole time for the chest after the dungeon and once you get to it it makes you wait more for it. Sure, there are enemies to fight along the wait but it doesn't have the action that Mega Man X is well known for. It is different since after you finished all the action you wait longer for the anticipation of the chest showing you what's inside rather than the chest just presenting it.
You have a point and it shows that he may have some nostalgia to the game, but the game gets less immersive in Ocarina, rather than shows hype in MMX.
TL;DR - MMX transitions = approx. 3 seconds,
Ocarina of Time transitions = approx. 6 to 8 seconds.
Ultimaetus You know what else was an homage? Every item in the Zelda series and the standardized dungeon-item formula.
Nazareadain Let me know which 3D Zelda game had "a ladder" as a usable item in homage to the original.
Besides that, Arin clearly stated that in A Link to the Past, the item you got in a dungeon was NOT directly correlated to the boss you would fight. Yes, every dungeon gives you an item but only since Zelda entered the third dimension has it been "standard" for the item to be your only means of defeating the boss or exploring the dungeon it's in fully.
castilater You're just iterating on my point. An homage is a shitty excuse.
***** You know, you can only get away with shitty behavior if you make a good point. You don't even make sense. On a basic level. Literally cannot understand you. You're like a raccoon I found near a dumpster just hissing at me. I understand that you're mad, but that's about it. Don't make me call pest control.
They showed us this video in class. Awesome
THEMING
INTRO STAGE
FUCK
which subject?
Bump'n'Jump
intro to animation. it´s just a class to get you started on the whole carrere, so we´ve seen stuff about animation, films and videogames
i envy you so much. I wished i had animation classes in highschool
Bump'n'Jump
i´m in university
5:48 The best title ever, and also a funny pun for a Megaman game
I actually appreciate the Vile fight of the intro stage in the original game, because in Maverick Hunter (PSP remake) he actually has a health bar there and kind of takes away from the sense of helplessness that Arin talked about in the video.
Megaman! Megaman! This is called a comment! You can-
Too far
HEY NO FUCKING SHIT!!! I CAN SEE THAT!! ITS JUST SO.... GRRRR... I'M GOING CRAZY HERE!!!
SHUT YOUR MOUTH! I DON'T NEED YOU!
I already KNOW THIS!!
SHUT UP I DONT NEED YOU!!
When Egoraptor uses his 'dumb guy' voice he sounds way too much like Pauly Shore. Was that his inspiration?
billny33 His "What do i do, where do i go?" voice sounded like Kevin from Vsauce2.
JUMPANDSHOOT
billny33 who the fuck watches Pauly shore?!
People who love seeing the movie Bio-Dome, I.E.. ME!!!. Iron man, Iron man, does whatever, Iron man does!.. HAHAHAHA
Nah fam That’s Christopher Walkin
Back when he was Egoraptor and not Arin Hanson
I TRIGGER PEOPLE god I feel that. He’s a genuinely smart dude. Draws great and knows a lot about game design. I’d rather have this then him screaming with danny
@@dominicesquivel3901 FOR REAL. I understand the appeal of watching playthroughs and I watch some, but to replace these gems with... That.. ):
OUCH
This video taught me so much about how to view a game's overall design and not just the aesthetic properties
Current Arin should really learn from past Arin.
Brandon Ross DAGardevoir Ikr???
Especially about Hammer Joes. Watch him and Dan play MM3 on Game Grumps. On Shadow Man's "revisited" stage Arin proceeds to get his skull caved in repeatedly by a Hammer Joe because the ceiling is too low to jump over the hammers and he never realizes the game wants him to slide under them while returning fire. He burns all his Magnet Missiles instead, and once those run out, he's back to eating hammers again haha
Current Arin is a terrible sequel, new entries should take inspiration from Past Arin.
Arin became Soy
Man, Arin used to be funny and able to form solid non-contradictory opinions, what happened?
ok, i just cant help it! this video is SO well made! no joke, as of right now, this is my favorite video on youtube! i LOVE this video! AWESOME job egoraptor!
"They don't know Obama!"
**shows a picture of Nelson Mandela**
X'D
This is what we call a joke
yeah, i get it..
Wow, Jay-Z get older so fast.
that kanye?
Thanks. Now that you've explained the joke I can appreciate it more
In the year of our Lord two-thousand and twenty-four I still think about "Where do I go? What do I do? That's bad conveyance," when I play a game and I get stuck because I don't know what to do next.
>says "i learn how to play from game design" in the video.
>does the exact opposite when on game grumps.
"you push this button to shoot things."
how is that hard to learn?
i played *tons* of older games in my day. i even played games older than myself.
SuperSonicDan2000 hi
***** Todays games are more complex, there are more buttons, thus more features. The layout isnt 2d anymore, and its not a "Go right and dont die to win"
But what *I* hate, is that they still need to tell you how to look around.
"press a to jump."
"jump button jumps? you're a genius."
What I liked about Mega Man X over normal Mega Man is the serious upgrade to the character's sprite design, in Mega Man, he looks like a derpy robot, but in Mega Man X, he's given a totally new make-over that makes him look epic and gives the game a lot more seriousness.
Ever just remember this and immediately go back to this video.
If TH-cam ever makes a Hall of Fame this video definitely has to be there
0:04 My first favorite part. Oh boy it's a Megaman!
"You thought i would talk about just bad sequels?"
Well Arin i would appreciate you talking about sequels as a spiritual topic at this point.
yes
This is a certified hood classic
This is seriously one of the best videos of all time. Super ahead of its time with the jokes and even game design philosophy
It created a whole genre of YT video, which is hilarious because Aaron was like "Sequelitas was toooo hard to make". Meanwhile people make these on almost a weekly basis now 😂
Just got my SNES Classic. Spent the last half-hour playing Mega Man X and after dying a few times, finally beat Chill Penguin for the first time.
It felt "good". :-)
GreyWolfLeaderTW Try playing Flame Mammoth's stage before and after beating Chill Penguin. It's neat how they added cool details.
Why do people even use money to buy stuff? They can just steal from somebody else!
It's still illegal if they're redistributed and easy to access, such as the Virtual console, or the XBOX Live Arcade, etc.
You didn't get it from a scalper, did you?
Menthols The SNES mini doesn't cost hundreds of dollars if you buy it from a legit store.
6:25 best part by far lol. "Hey MegaMan what chu doing?" " Oh nothing just jumpin shooting."
I watched this the first time it comes out and sometimes still re-watching it even now, i even remember the transcript by heart.
this video like a legend, its pretty fuckin good
Got reminded of this while playing "The Strongest Tofu" tonight. It's a platformer with ZERO tutorials or instructions... and yet it was way easier to learn than a lot of "normal" platformers since it actually embraced "teach the player through play"
It's funny how he contradicts this video when playing on Game Grumps.
This is purely speculation on my part, but I'd be willing to assume that when he's playing a video game by himself, he pays more attention to game-design oriented tutorials like the one described here.
While playing with a friend, and attempting to be entertaining to an audience, his mind probably isn't as consistently on the game, preventing such subtleties from being noticed consistently.
People really hate egoraptor? Lol how can you hate this guy? He's amazing!
Ehh, it's the Game Grumps episodes. Twenty thousand of those, nobody likes them, and only a few of THESE things that could win freakin' comedy awards!!!
I know right.i probably watched all of his videos by now😊
If you watch Game Grumps, you can tell he is kinda douchy. Now, Dan, that guy is amazing.
Raziel Díaz
i always felt like dan was too boring he always avoids any conflict with arin wich caused hilarious reactions when jon was around, dan had his awesome moments too tho but he's just too fucking nice sometimes XD
Nyxter x That's why I prefer Danny over Arin, he's such a nice guy and can tell awesome stories, he is just very interesting. Like, sometimes Danny was being all cool and nice and suddenly Arin yells at him. That doesn't changes the fact that Arins is kind of a D-bag :p
After 8 years i came back and decide to count how many times he said "Fuck"
Result: 77
(Yes im bored)
Thanks
I come back to this video 12 years later to relive the nostalgia of life being simpler
1:25 Hey there Mr. Arin. There's no need for that kind of language. The only F word is fun.
You win. Here, take this.....( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
