    A political body collecting metadata is particularly frightening. If they can understand the people, they can control them with modern marketing ploys. Seriously scary shit

    So basically story is that
    1: People who freely put their information online to share to the World on an app where their entire business platform is the selling of that information and selling ad space, because the user is the product.
    2: Then Facebook ends up selling that information to a Cambridge Analytica who will use it for advertising, but does it without the users' permission (which may not even be a crime or at least one where no one has gone to jail yet in the U.S.)
    3: The Trump campaign, wanting to win the election, decided to become an early adopter and used this information with help from Cambridge Analytica to have create more advance social media advertising techniques.
    4: Trump Won
    5: Cambridge Analytica, which wants to make as much profit as it can, claims credit Trumps victory - with no evidence.
    6: Now almost everyone who wish Trump had lost are blaming Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, even though just a year ago most of them saw Mark Zuckerberg as a Christ like figure.

    People mostly ignore advertisement, especially on the internet. It seems to me that everyone is looking for an easy explanation why all the predictions were wrong. People do not vote because of an ad-campaign on Facebook. They vote, because they are not happy with the way things develop in their personal life and they vote for the candidate who is most likely to change it.

    I like how the response of Trump supporters is "but Obama did it first!" Ok but how does that fix the problem? Yes, yes Obama should get just as much hate if he did it too, but we aren't going to move forward if every following leader goes "well my predecessor did it so it's ok for me to do it!" Really I would expect you to demand more of your politicians, I thought the Republican Party (the conservative movement in general) was supposed to be of a higher moral principle.

    • @novocastrianwinter9869

      Baron Von Wolf It matters because those who are stirring up this Facebook-Cambridge saga we’re in right now are acting with extreme hypocrisy & bias spreading conspiracy theories to delegitimize an elected president & the Brexit referendum. This entire story is an insult to voters everywhere.
      Also in four years no one made a case against Facebook or the Obama campaign. Now democracy is allegedly at risk.
      Precedence & legality matter.
      See www.investors.com/politics/editorials/facebook-data-scandal-trump-election-obama-2012/

      Baron Von Wolf nobody said shit when obama did it, he was labeled as a genius and now that trump did the same he is labelled inmoral? Total bullshit

    • @baronvonwolf1457
      @baronvonwolf1457 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not my point though. The question is not whether or not they are being hypocritical its whether or not if it was immoral to begin with and whether or not we should demand more from the supposedly "better" candidates. If it is agreeably immoral then Trump and Republicans are just as immoral for continuing the practice as the Dems who used it before them and deserve our scorn, especially since they are the ones in power.

    What about people like me who just get pissed off at adverts? I don't care whats in them the fact that your showing me an advert makes me tune it out or try to turn it off. I don't need a private company telling me what I should or shouldn't, feel, or what things I should be interested in. As far as I'm concerned all advert companies should be limited in what they can do much more then they currently are.
