- Cambridge Analytica claims to use data 'to change audience behaviour'. But now a whistleblower, Christopher Wylie, has come forward to expose the company's practices. Wylie describes how its CEO, Alexander Nix, attracted support from the then Breitbart editor, Steve Bannon, and investment from the billionaire Robert Mercer before obtaining help from the Cambridge professor Aleksandr Kogan to harvest tens of millions of Facebook profiles

Any time you use a technological device that is connected to the internet, there is some organization of some sort "harvesting your data"
How do you think apps like Netflix, Pandora, spotify, etc create playlists and suggestions tailored to your preferences?
Facebook isn't the issue. The issue is that the public, as a whole, has willingly presented themselves to the internet, which is a public domain. Companies have capitalized on this ignorance, "harvested" the information that was willingly (albeit ignorantly) presented, and used it to their advantage. Even TH-cam has an algorithm to present each user with suggested videos and pinpointed advertisements based on search history and watch history. If you want to avoid all of this, my suggestion would to be stop using the internet. Stop using your smart televisions, your Siri's, your Google, your GPS. it's all information that can legally be collected because like it or not, you yourself are CHOOSING to present it to the internet, which is a public domain.
Remember, Instagram and what’s up belong to facebook. Also, google and all apps use your data

When I was doing the CELTA course, we had to do a profile on one of the students who attended. I passsed that assignment but did not go deeply into the psychology of the student which according to the feedback, I was supposed to do. I found that really odd.

I watched the full interview and to be honest, he seemed to me very intellectual, clever guy. His way of talking, explanations is good. The single thing that made me doubtful about his claims was his argumentation. When he was asked "What's your proof that they manipulated people?" he merely said "I was there, I saw everything". It isn't strong phrase to support your argument.
I think he is no hero either. He is probably doing this because of some dispute with the management.

Sad but true. This seems like Marketing 101 at it's worst, or best (depending on perspective). Change is inevitable. However hastening such on a macro level, without gradual accommodations on a micro level, eventually leads to instability, if not not total chaos.

An English company is related to the biggest social network in the world (which is American), and they have been working together to change people's minds using data. And then they consider themselves as the best countries in the world.
They can try. This is the same junk as "subliminal" messaging and what not. Most people ignore that junk. I never tried any "personality" surveys. I always ignore ads. 0 clicks. I don't smoke, drink microbrews, vape, WOW.

This is in no way new. Facebook/fakebook has always allowed the collection and selling of data from users for targeting adds. How the heck do you think a free product like FB makes so much money?

i don't know how many of you use fb app, you will notice that without any user permission the ph. contacts gets sync and the result is the fb starts showing those names for frnd request suggestions and rest of the data...
They are *ALL* in cahoots with each other. Now they're just playing the blame game.
to everyone saying that it was a well-known fact (meaning facebook harvesting data from users) : yes it was. It was however not clear that it was to be used for targeting specific political ads and to manipulate people based on their previous likes etc profiting a few billions on the way...

Isn't it a nice coincidence of Kogan's affiliation...? So, of course he is a "professor of semantics", so well-trained to play with words in a right way. But second, the Big Five personality test is forced by its authors onto thousands of users on the Facebook or many dating sites without warning that the data will be used for publications or other use. Then these academicians promote their careers by publishing juicy reports from their "massive studies" even though the consent of participants was not received, and the test itself if rather pathetic. Hey, psychologists - don't you have to have a consent for your studies, why your professional associations are staying silent in this scandal?
