    They tested this first on Philippines. The result was astonishing. It affected the result of the election and rebranded a family's bad image.

      Won't matter. If your friends are dumb enough to use Whatsapp and have a few infos about you on their phone - like full name, number, maybe your birthday and profession and a pic that shows up when you call, facebook already has those from you to use as they see fit. It also will connect you to anyone else using that shit who has your name and number (or just your number) on their phone, so it basically knows your circles and their preferences, might be able to recognize your face on pictures posted on Fb unrelated to you, can assume your political alignment from what the majority of your friends like and don't like and so on and so forth. All that without your permission and completely legal, as it was in the GTC users of course did not read - and would have accepted anyway, 'cause they've got "nothing to hide", even if it's not their own data they're trading away for a nice virtual toy.

    It looks and sounds a lot like psychological warfare. Knowledge is power and knowing almost everything about someone is dangerous. Then using it to manipulate them to act a certain way for political gain is disgusting.

    • @the80386
      @the80386 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      it IS psychological warfare. people still think we live in an era where countries will loudly announce they're going to war and go with armies and guns blazing. nonsense! in this cyber age, we have two parallel worlds - a physical and a cyber. the war is continuously going on in the cyber domain. very soon, the cyber analysis and psych-op departments will take the lead as the most important defence branches of a country rather than army, navy or airforce.

    • @NickRoman
      @NickRoman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Psychological and otherwise. It became clear to all that the Internet turned full-on cyberwar when the U.S. and Israel destroyed Iranian (it was Iran, right?) nuclear weapon fuel enrichment centrifuges via a remote network based attack. It came out of information attacks into physically destroying equipment. I'm not saying what they did was right or wrong, just that the cyberwar is on.

    • @the80386
      @the80386 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ^ to be fair, the weapon use claim was never confirmed although it was the predominant media narrative. iran continues to say that their facility was for power-plant use only. in fact they still operate their facilities because the attack caused partial damage. the negative impact however, is that they've become much more defensive and has organized their own cyber analysis department which is regarded as one of the most comprehensive, along with usa, china, israel and russia.

    • @NickRoman
      @NickRoman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry, yes to the clarification. In a TH-cam comment details get left out.

      The KGB has been masters of psyops and propaganda since cold war days. It stands to reason that the FSB would continue the trend, but now with the power of big data, targeting individual profiles, via troll farms on social-media and other fake-news sites, masquerading as like-minded Americans, and amplifying your "echo-chamber". A lot of people don't want to believe to they could be so easily manipulated, but if you know a person's deepest beliefs, fears, and ideology then yes, you can surround them with carefully crafted media to unconsciously nudge their behavior. I work in a social media analytics firm and although we've never (illegally and unethically) taken it to this level for advertising firms, social influence does work - or there wouldn't be a billion dollar industry surrounding it. In the end, most people don't vote based on facts, but on beliefs. CA understands and has weaponized that.

    • @Jarnauga
      @Jarnauga 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This has less to do with it than people claim. "Drain the swamp" came from that, wuhu, really hard to figure out that that would play well with the targeted voters, doesn't need all this data mining to get that idea. This data mining just makes it easier. But this isn't exactly a new thing, politicians figuring out what to say and what people want to hear and manipulating them. Playing into the peoples fears into exactly a new strategy, and most of Trumps Rhetorik isn't exactly new or innovative, its often just the same thing that was used over and over again in the past. Fear of immigrants for example. And the idea to play into the business-man aspect as a politician in the US isn't exactly hard to figure out either, kinda obvious.

    • @rolandxb3581
      @rolandxb3581 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe yeah even though they didnt use the data in the general election, since the RNC's own data were way more accurate, according to CBS. And there really is no proof that these data significantly influenced the election. After all, campaigns can get you to watch their material, but they can't make you vote for their candidate. Same goes for fake news. If you are willing to believe that Hillary ran a pedophile network, you'd have never voted for her in any circumstance anyway. Genuine fake news is preaching to the choir.
      But if you're so partisan that you think anyone who voted for Trump or other Republicans is evil or brainwashed, your bubble is a serious problem. The bubble that Facebook (and Google) are also respondible for, and which is more important. Try reading The Righteous Mind if you genuinely want to know why not everyone is as smart, unbiased and sensible as you are when it comes to politics. It opened my eyes.

    • @windandsun9615
      @windandsun9615 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That I know. What's new to me is that those data were transmitted to Trump to target particular populations and win the election.

Just be aware that passively recorded audio has already been used as evidence in a criminal case.

      In order for Alexa to talk back, she has to be listening at all times. That is the scary part. Same for Siri or any other A.I. The constant recording in addition to your location data being turned on is just giving away privacy.

      Deleting facebook is like burning all the paper money in the world. It might cause some temporary upheaval, but it changes nothing. The desire for social connectivity is present. Even without that, the ability to gather information is present as long as you use the internet in any way. Even if you don't, the ability to extract and extrapolate information based on the data gathered from those you know is present. And most importantly of all, the market for personal information is present. You might change some aesthetic details and money might change hands, but ending Facebook wouldn't change the nature of the beast at all.

      LA Fresh Life I think people are starting to wake up to not just the losing your data aspect of social media, but how much of a negative effect it's having on society's mood overall. Everyone using FB is being somewhat effected by it psychologically. There' no denying it. I know it's true personally. I'm so happy I finally walked away from it. Took me years

    What happened to voting on policy instead of emotion is that so difficult.

    • @allisondoak9425
      @allisondoak9425 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Uno G I think people who vote for policy rather than personality often make emotional decisions though. For instance if my fundamental emotional reaction to immigrants is empathy I will probably vote for policy that helps immigrants, if my fundamental reaction is fear I’m probably going to be really excited when someone proposes a wall building policy. I don’t think that there’s inherently anything wrong with emotions in voting though, we often have emotions for good reasons but at the same time I do think that they need to be taken with a balanced diet of critical thinking and open mindedness. We should also invest ourselves in introspection in that we should try to figure out generally, in all matters of life, where our emotions come from so that we understand why we feel the way we do rather than disregard our valid emotions and/or become subservient to them.

      Uno G ...we turned into a tribal society, and are blindly committed to the tribe, regardless if it's right or wrong.

    • @colibriverde
      @colibriverde 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that we need to be aware of our emotions, be aware of the manipulations. What propagandists do is work up a person's emotional response-anger, fear, indignation which subverts a person's ability to think critically. If you decided to vote for a policy that you "believe" will help immigrants, but you can not describe the policy and you know nothing about it, then you are probably making an emotional decision. But if you are making an informed decision to help immigrants, that is a decision based on values, not emotions.

    There is no such thing as privacy of any kind any more

    • @KellicTiger
      @KellicTiger 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there is. You just don't know how to do it. You just need to be willing to remove ease of use and convenience on the net to get it. Don't use Google. Don't use Apple, don't use Microsoft. Don't use social media, use TOR. If you are using e-mail PAY for the service. If you pay for something you aren't the product. Don't use Chrome as its Google. Use either Firefox or Opera. Use the plugins that can turn off javascript. Clear out your temp files every time you load the browser. Don't cache passwords. Avoid creating accounts in general, etc. Use a VPN all the time. Etc.
      There are certain things you can't get around. Credit Bureaus hold a huge amount of data on you and there is nothing that can be done on that. Same with the City, State, and Federal levels. Same with the car you are driving. There is a ton of telemetry that is collected. But those things are generally minor. To make a blanket statement that there is no privacy of any kind is just stupid.

      @thunderdrake13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's kind of naive to think. Even if you delete your Facebook, how do you know your info isn't deleted off of their databases or already sold to other companies? A great example is Snapchat. When you snap something, its gone in 24hr, but it still gets stored into snapchat databases. Rule of thumb on the internet is if it gets on there, its there to stay.

    They're always sending these notifications: "This person wants to be your friend"; "Say Happy Birthday to this person." I think social media has more responsibility for understanding basic psychology, since they employ data-manipulating firms to exploit it. People come to these sites in innocence, wanting to be friendly to others, even to strangers, not to discriminate because of someone's name or appearance---and they are encouraged by their host to meet and interact with people they may or may not know. Yes, you could be super-hateful (or call it vigilant), put on a false face and tell lies about yourself, in the name of "protection", but that doesn't make the world a better place. We need the host who invites everyone into his house to stand up, make wise judgments and look out for his guests.

      well, there's a big difference between leading you to believe trump is racist, and reality trump supporters shouting racist comments at rallies. The tactic is absolutely is used on both sides. but disliking trump isn't a "red" vs "blue" issue. It's an idiot vs nonidiot issue. Okay, saying idiot might be mean but... I mean, if you are ignoring reality (forget what anyone on tv says, I mean actual reality) just to support your team and ignoring all the genuine faults...well definitely not a smart move to do. supporting trump isn't supporting conservatism. disliking trump doesn't make you a liberal. using hyperbolic examples like yours doesn't make trump a better person or a better leader. He's bad, he's done bad things, and even if you support him...his very actions (yes, his actions, not what anyone tells you about him) show he doesn't care at all what happens to you :\

Social democrats are the worst enemy of communists like Mao and Castro. Comparing Bernie to those guys doesn't show that comparing Trump to Hitler is wrong. It just shows that you have absolutely no clue about politics and political theory. Before comparing social democrats to communists you should read something about communsim.

    Cambridge Analytica does not even operate or have anything to do with Cambridge - They moved their meetings with Steve Bannon to Cambridge so it would appear so initially...
    - And sorry but it was said from the very beginning that on Facebook you as the user are the product. If we as users do not change our emotional reaction patterns in place of a reflection based consensus, then we will continue to be manipulated - if not by CA then by someone else. The fatality of our need for drama, storytelling and constant curiosity is unfortunately also our achilles heal.
    It can not be a secret or rather come as a surprise anymore - When we engage on social media, we are subject to analysis and information gathering. Nothing is for free and neither is Facebook, Google or other socially based internt medias. Knowledge is power. Those that undertake these kind of actions as in this case knows that very well and they know how to utilise this knowledge to their bidding.

      You make a lot of excellent points here. There's one thing you say that I don't understand. Can you clarify what you mean by "a reflection based consensus"? Please and thank you.

      HesteBremse I'm glad you raised these points. Especially the office location. Americans who hear "Cambridge Analytica" seem to associate it with Cambridge University, when that's not at all the case. Whistleblower Christopher Wiley made a point to say that they didn't even have a legitimate office there, but when Bannon, Mercer, or any other of the power players involved would visit, Nix would have equipment and staff moved from the London office to give the CA office the appearance of validity and professionalism. This is a company that's entirely based in manipulating what people see, hear, and think. Their investors and senior administrative officials are obviously not immune to such brainwashing.

      HesteBremse and by "reflection based consensus", do you mean voting as our influencing factors (including people) tell us to?

    • @HesteBremse
      @HesteBremse 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      By reflection based consensus I mean that everybody must start to (at least try) to think a little different - meaning to reflect up on why a message is coming "your way" and what it actually means - ask why I was sent and what the purpose of it is or what it could be - it would mean to make a secondary reflection on the subject to avoid acting directly or "only" on our emotional responses. There is nothing wrong with emotions, but they belong in certain life situations better than in others.
      When we are engaging on Social Media and as described in the utility of CA used to wire and strongly affect our perceptions - in this emotional reactions becomes a tool to be abused by those who intend to move us towards different perceptions fitting their agenda. By consensus I mean to collectively understand that our emotional reactions must be challenged by ourself regardless of who we are - Like some rules that are never written down, but something that is understood broadly by a community or group because it serves the group purposefully regardless of different opinions within it.
      We are humans and we are strongly emotional beings so it is not an easy thing to ask to set aside these emotions and it is also not the real purpose, but if we do not have that extra layer of reflection running, we will remain open targets for emotionally driven content, which essentially often have a completely unemotional goals - Like; Power, Money, Diversion, Confusion and the most utilised political tool "Divide and Conquer" in other words Polarising intent.
      it is a huge challenge but considering that social media in fact also makes us able to debate and discuss nearly globally, we must try to reach a consensus about how we react to all these constructed influences. The line between truth and reality is becoming constantly more blurred on the digital world we call the internet - because everything can be produced to fit the individual user (target) and it is nearly impossible for each user to check sources and validate content thoroughly.
      And even here we must also consider why we discuss various subjects - Why do we do it?. There is not only one answer, but for sure we are trying to understand what is going on - Why does one person have this opinion over another, Why can´t or will this person not understand my view or why can I not understand his or her view. If we do not apply a reflection based mindset then we can not expect the outcome of the debate to become fruitful or useful - Meaning we just remain stagnant in our own perception of what is and we remain polarised and so we are fairly easy target regardless of political sides or otherwise.
      Overall I have no answer how to achieve this consensus - but it is evident that most user profiles have real people in real lifes behind it, even the "Trolls" are real people and so is those that perhaps works for professional influencing companies. Everybody has a history, a social background and it is natural that these factors have had a strong influence on how each person see the world. I would simply advice to remember that when we communicate and to apply similar reflections when we debate or react to content.
      - Remember that our emotional nature can subject to abuse, so think twice before you react.
      - Remember that one message on a subject might not be the exact same as another user have seen.
      - Remember that behind the text in a thread there is mostly real people, but in some cases there are people being paid to act as other persons...
      - If you suspect that a professional influencer is at work - then regard it as You being on to something important to the subject debated.
      - Remember there is a chance that a strongly emotional driven content is manufactured to catch You - Ask what is the purpose or intent of it.
      - Acknowledge that everything on digital media is subject to information gathering - Nothing is for Free, never has been.
      _____
      Secondary and fully on my own account I find that Prejudgment and large scale Generalisation is a huge problem in the global debate.
      I would suggest anybody regardless of political side and standpoint to avoid these two verbs when debating. If you have numbers or other fact based knowledge then it is not generalisation anymore. Prejudgment is a "super negative" that leaves out any openings for a constructive debate - But it is often what brings people to debate.
      TY

      What? A politician telling the people what they like to hear? Yeah really new thing, this just makes it easier, the problem is a simple lack of education. But some politicians were always good at figuring out what to say and how to manipulate people. The Problem remain the people, not the internet or social media.
