I had this for over 10 years and didn't realize what it was. Unfortunately most GI and ENT doctors do not have much of a solution for it. The ENT doctor I went to at least did give me a definitive diagnosis. The ones I went to put me on PPIs to" reduce acid damage" which don't work very well and caused other problems like SIBO, Yeast overgrowth and possibly the HPylori I had. These guys are good doctors the problem is that to solve this you have to change your diet and lifestyle extensively that's not something a medical doctor can really help you with.

I stopped my painful GERD with magnesium cream before bed nightly. Rub on hairless skin, don't think I'd use it on neck. Use a decent amount...start with at least 2 finger tips smallish scoop. They say the older, stressed, fatter, sickly you are the more you need. I truly believe GERD is a magnesium deficiency. I have to admit, I do have bouts of silent GERD sometimes...as you say there's no good fix, except diet change

It can also be not what you eat but HOW you eat. I realized that I was eating too quickly. I decided to eat more slowly and my silent reflux is getting much much better. This is never mentioned by doctors but this was the cause in my case. Something to consider.

    • @AbbyLaporte

THIS!!! For me it was almost entirely timing. When I eat way slower, breathe beforehand, calm down, sit up straight, and am less stressed and choose to relax, specifically, to eat slower, I my symptoms almost go away no matter what I eat. I mean, there are some exceptions, but overall it's soooo much so this for some people.

20 years of symptoms, including massive dental breakdown and 7 root canals and I am finally understanding what is happening. I was diagnosed with GERD years back and nothing Rxd worked, and no one--not the ENT, not the GI doc, not the dentist --mentioned anything about LRP. Initially I was diagnosed with GERD and BO; given PPI's which initially worked but a year later after suffering iron deficient anemia, chronic fatigue and sinus problems, I was re-diagnosed with LPR and hypochlorhdria. I’m 39, active and healthy. I had this issue creep up on me and wasn’t sure how to approach it. ENT or GI Doc? Is this an allergic reaction to food/drink? Am I being exposed to something harmful at work?
Here’s what my symptoms look like:
Episodic. Could be daily or weekly.
Random feeling of pressure in stomach/abdomen. Always regular, never constipated. Usually symptoms begin in the late afternoon or evening. Never in the morning. Worst when sitting, better when standing, best when lying down. Sometimes symptoms begin on empty stomach, sometimes 1-3 hours after a meal. Sometimes consuming a meal would actually help subdue the symptoms if they already began….
Relief of pressure by burp or just involuntary relaxation of stomach/esophagus without trying or with positional change. Then, almost instantaneously, tightness in throat. Like instant dryness/tension/swelling with quick buildup of mucus. Always incessant throat clearing, sometimes globus. Coughing. Asthma-like reaction with variable degree of chest tightening. Sometimes tightness in my back between shoulder blades. Then the sinuses. Complete shutdown and closure. Sometimes burning/stinging. Never any heartburn or feeling of liquid acid in my throat or elsewhere. It is almost gaseous. Symptoms can last for hours or even days.
These symptoms started slowly many months ago and gradually progressed in intensity and regularity. In an instant, I will feel like I’ve gone from running on 8 pistons to 4. It can wreck my day. I am nearly certain that I’m experiencing a reaction to pepsin rising from the stomach to places that it shouldn’t be. If the onset of symptoms cannot be prevented, the pepsin needs to be neutralized and washed out. Here are some suggestions if this applies to you:
Neti pot will save me if I can address the symptoms in time, as they’re starting. I also pay attention to internal stomach pressure and take OTC gas medication after meals. This, I believe, keeps pressure off of the LES so the pepsin doesn’t escape the stomach via LES.
The other game changer is just a baking soda and water solution to gargle. It will save you when the symptoms set in. I wish everyone luck with this. I don’t believe in PPIs as a magic wand. The journey to figure out whether or not this was allergy/exposure related was extremely difficult. As a funny aside, I am a cop. I was wondering if my pepper spray was leaking and stopped carrying it on my duty belt. Of course I drink a lot of coffee late at night to get me though my shifts. Compression from my ballistic vest isn’t helping, either. Meal management, positional changes (less sitting, pressure on stomach) spice/caffeine/acidic food & drink avoidance should help.

It's 100% diet. I had it really bad to the point that a prominent pulmonologist misdiagnosed me with COPD. Both times I went on a strict ketogenic diet, all of my symptoms disappeared within a few days. I can't say it was cutting carbs, however, because if I take a shot of honey it relieves my symptoms almost immediately. My best advice is to be vigilant for a good two months keeping a food diary. That should give you enough data to identify the foods that trigger your LPR. Coffee and high fat foods were definitely not my triggers, because on keto, I drank lots of coffee and had mostly high fat foods. My worst offenders are processed foods that use cheap industrial oils like vegetable oil - that's almost all processed foods (cookies, cakes, many breads). It seems like if I just eat meat, fish, eggs, fruit, vegetables I'm fine. My symptoms were all the usual suspects: globus, chronic cough caused by stealth post-nasal drip, throat clearing etc. Acid sneakily shoots up to the larynx and it sets off a cascade of Ear, Nose, and Throat issues.

@@Versiongurl It's "pure honey" from Golding Farms. They are in North Carolina, but I think their product is sold nationwide. I think it's just masking the problem temporarily because it coats the throat and takes away the constant tickle from LPR that causes a cough reflux. For me, if I eat a nutrient dense diet with real food and do moderate exercise (even just walking for an hour a day) this problem goes away completely within a few days. If I become sedentary and eat (sugar, flour, cheap oils) like those found in cookies, cakes, breads etc., the problem comes roaring back. I've dealt with this and conquered it and dealt with it and conquered it over and over and over. It's the same pattern every time - at least for me.

Because my usual symptoms were almost gone and turned into shortness of breath, clearing of throat in the morning, sour/bitter taste, burning throat, chest pain. Before I take my iron supplement and dealt with constant stress and anxiety. My gerd symptoms was the typical I have been dealing with for months which we bloating, indigestion, lump in the throat, heartburn, dizziness, dry mouth which I can easily managed back then. Now it's a different scenario and it's freaking me out. 😢

@@Fetherko absolutely this is the common theory. I think the thing to remember with this is that it is very multifactorial and quite honestly. It really is a pain in the ass. I’m a singer, and this has absolutely positively negatively affected my voice. It’s absolutely horrendous. And it’s some thing that comes and goes. The lower esophageal sphincter seems to be the issue not so much acid production in the stomach. And the pepsin is supposed to be the biggest issue here in terms of coming up and irritating the voice box, which creates inflammation and significant mucus production.

I was constantly clearing my throat and especially during vigorous sports. GERD was suggested by a friend of mine. I also have sleep apnea and am a mouth breather and snorer when I sleep. In my quest to avoid CPAP and improve my sleep situation I started mouth taping. I can tell you that within 2 weeks my throat clearing disappeared. (My sleep apnea also went from severe to mild on my next sleep test) So it wasn’t reflux. This one is tricky indeed. Good luck everyone.

@@debbiec6216 Hi. No I taped my mouth shut at night to stop mouth breathing. Sleeping with the mouth open allows the tongue to fall back into the airway more easily and also contributes to snoring and can contribute to sleep apnea events. I taped my mouth shut in an effort to reduce my obstructive sleep apnea severity. It worked for that and a side bonus was the throat clearing went away. I suspect my throat was getting so dried out at night while breathing only through my mouth that it irritated it and led to my throat clearing.

Food that doesn't trigger me are, soaked almonds, walnuts, roasted pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, fruits like mango, watermelon, cantaloupe, muskmelon, apple, banana (see if it suits you). Boiled legumes. Oil and sugar to be eliminated. If you can get hold of pure extra virgin olive oil, you can have it. Green leafy vegetables, cucumber, carrots, broccoli. Avoid spicy spices. All these don't trigger me, u try some, and see if it suits you, coz everyone is different. All the best, yeah, I also have roasted flax seed and Nigella sativa seeds. Good luck. Dairy, sugar and seed oils as well as non veg trigger my LPR. So you do what doesn't trigger you.

I forget what the actual diagnosis was but my 24 hour Ph monitor test and endoscopies all pointed to upper esophageal reflux with esophageal rings whatever they are and functional esophagus whatever that it. I was sent to voice doctors and they took high resolution video of my vocal cords in action which was painful. My vocal cords are very stained with edema and the area around them are pock marked with white blobs. One of the vocal cords has a small white things sticking out and the cords smash together and stick together. What's more is my pulmonary function test showed stage III I think COPD yet my VO2 Max is superior and all my fitness activities show high functional capacity, low breathing rate and low resting heart rate. I run out of breath when talking sometimes just a few seconds in. I can go all day at max incline on a treadmill and not even breathe hard. My voice sounds raspy and harsh and it hurts to talk and sometimes to swallow. It's been like this for two decades with no improvement except for a period of time when I was on nexium. Now the HMO wont authorize nexium and my throat and esophagus are swollen and it triggered Afib recently when swallowing too much of a smoothie after working out. My voice sounds a little like RFK Jrs at times. It hurts to talk and I run out of breath and energy doing so. Some docs said this is anxiety other said it is GERD and LPR and others have said it is COPD. Not a smoker. Grew up around it though. When I was kid my heartburn was daily and always up in my throat not my chest area. Now it doesnt burn up there it just hurts.

Right now back on nexium but hasnt been long enough to see if it is helping. Hoping I dont have throat cancer. Low stomach acid. If you have a burning in your stomach when empty get tested for H. Pylori. If you have H. Pylori get this solved first if no H. Pylori then get HCL with Pepsin supplement. Start with low doses. This saved me from major acid reflux, SIBO and candida overgrowth issues. All my health issue started because I drank too much fluids with my meals that diluted my stomach acid and cause dysbiosis. Be safe everyone.

@@debbiec6216hi, do you take probiotics at all? Gut health is extremely important. I was a nurse for over 30 years, and we were always taught that bad odors, bad breath, etc comes from the colon...it COULD also be something in your diet, too....but do yourself a big favor....look up info/videos on healing leaky gut, restoring your biome also, there is a wealth of videos right here on you tube. Most of the info is on dietary changes and can be followed simply after checking with your Dr first!

  • @cardten

I've suffered for 5 years with LPR. Have GI, ENT and Allergist involved but they prefer to treat through meds. Some diet, exercise and lifestyle modifications are helpful but substantial relief of symptoms is elusive. I need to travel to a major med facility for more comprehensive testing beyond upper GI and ENT scopes. PPI's, supplements, gargles, and You Tube advice etc. don't provide consistent day-to-day relief. Good luck, and thanks for your channel.

@jakubdekys4799 These docs are typical of the medical establishment. They are all about stopping symptoms through drugs. Indirectly helping the Big Pharma. PPIs are the worst thing that you can take. Very often, you need more acid in the stomach for LES to work properly. PPIs do the opposite and give you polyps in the stomach. Medical profession needs to learn how to heal. They will never consider complementary medicine like fasting which helps the body to heal itself. Surgery is a brutal way to treat patients. Medical profession, whilst no doubt saves lives but for chronic conditions it is overrated along with those who practice it! Poor ignorant patient can easily get trapped by the medical system. Watch out.

@@jakubdekys4799 you need to talk to a GI doctor to rule out H pylori or other conditions in your stomach.
For me I have LPR but a strict low fodmap diet has been working for me. Maximum 6 weeks because you can get constipated. There is also the low histamine diet. As well as the high fiber diet.
In my case the bloating from eating high fiber food which is good for gut health was causing too much gas to be produced and weakened the upper muscle. So that gas that comes up is mixed with some stomach acid.
There is a lot of stuff online that has not been proven medically but may work for some people the apple cider vinegar thing has not been proven but my doctor said it doesn't hurt to try. Gl friend hope you find relief!

I’ve been suffering from post nasal drip for about two years now. I take linzess for constipation for about 4 years now. I’ve always had sinus/allergy issues my whole life and I’ve had sinus surgeries plus I’ve been getting allergy shots for about the past 4 years now. The post nasal drip only started a couple of years ago and I don’t think it’s caused by allergies, my doctor suggested acid reflux. I’m starting to wonder if linzess is causing Gerd and the Gerd is causing my post nasal drip. I do have a scope scheduled with a GI but I’m curious if anybody has had this issue with linzess?? I’m just trying to connect the dots.

@@Wellness101-cu8nd Hi, I had my scopes done from my GI Doctor, turns out I had an ulcer in my esophagus, an ulcer in my stomach, Gerd, and a hiatal hernia. All the acid coming up was irritating the throat, pharynx, and esophagus and your body reacts to produce more mucus to try to protect the tissues/mucosa lining. I’m on voquezna, sucralfate, Pepcid, and balofen to help heal the ulcers and reduce the stomach acid production. The meds help but they don’t completely stop the mucus in my throat. The amount has lessened but I still have strong episodes still. The only way to stop it and get off the meds is to have surgery to fix the Gerd and the hiatal hernia. A Nissan fundoplication or a toupe fundoplication was recommended to me but I’m scared to go through with the surgery so I’m still taking the meds. If you’ve ruled out Sinus or Allergy issues, I’d recommend going to a GI doctor and get checked out.

I found this to be disappointing. The vast majority of Acid Reflux patients suffer from low acid in the stomach which causes the lower esophageal sphincter to not close completely. Inhibiting acid production is like putting out a fire with gasoline. Pharmaceutical inhibitors are not the answer. Many people get complete relief by simply consuming a couple of table spoons of Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of water every day. This brings the acid in the stomach high enough to cause the sphincter to close thus preventing any reflux.

I tried to take the holistic path
first, to no avail ...I have it SO bad that acid literally comes out of my nose at night if I eat anything for 3 hours b4 bed or if I sleep flat. It us the scariest thing to wake up literally choking and not being able to get a breath until I can cough and blow my nose....very very scary! I was started on Omeprazole 40mg a day and if I am even late with my daily dose, I start having symptoms. Once it starts, the Omeprazole takes a lot longer to work, and I need to add an OTC pepcid! I don't want to stay on meds, but I think my condition is from having the gastric sleeve, because I had occasional reflux prior to the surgery.....it's more than an inconvenience, I've lost my singing voice, and that has altered my life greatly😢
