Claire Luvcat took her cat TT to Japan for this!!! It was last year???? She just recently lost General (I think he was 19, kidney failure) and hadn't posted for a while. She put up his last moments 2da... I don't know if you follow her or not but she's got 10 cats! I love her stuff. I lost my boy-cat in June, he was 16.75yrs and had hyperthyroid, elevated kidney numbers, and "changed" heart numbers.
My very first cat Max was diagnosed with congenital kidney disease at 6yrs old and he lived to be 17.5, dying of a completely unrelated cancer. We managed his kidney disease with k/d, sub-q fluids 2-3 times a week, plus he was on benazepril and famotidine. He only had to be hospitalized twice for his kidneys in that whole time, he did almost die once but he pulled through and lived several more years. It was pretty amazing and I’m so thankful to the vet we had at the time, who did so much to help him live a long mostly-healthy life. 🐈⬛🖤
It was really tough though, when my second kitty was diagnosed with kidney disease at 16yrs old. It was a whole different experience and she didn’t respond as well to treatment, ultimately dying of kidney failure also at 17.5yrs. Interestingly, she had started eating the k/d I was giving my other cat and absolutely refused anything else, and around that same time she became completely obsessed with fresh water, actually begging for fresh water several times a day. For the first couple of years of this, her bloodwork kept coming back normal, and they said it’s possible she was essentially treating her own kidney disease 🤷🏼♀️
This is fantastic news and i hope it pans out and becomes easily available. My girl was diagnosed at 12 and lived to be 20 before passing away from cancer. She didn't progress much at all until her last year, when i expect the cancer was having an effect as well. I had a custom low phosphorus recipe created for her and made her food from that, and i truly believe it made her healthier for longer. Not everyone has the resources to do that but I'm heartened to see that more low phosphorus foods are becoming available commercially and that other treatments are advancing. Thanks for sharing this info!
Best of luck! Food makes a huge difference- prescription diets are low protein but cats need protein. I consulted with a veterinary nutritionist and got a custom low phosphorus recipe for my girl who was diagnosed at 12 and lived to be 20 before she passed away from cancer. There are low phosphorus wet foods available for purchase as well. Tanya's ckd page is an AMAZING resource as well.
I hope the medication comes to the US soon. My cat has several birth defects, including malformed kidneys, so her treatment is like what a senior cat would receive. She turned 2 in July, and the vets are kind of amazed she's made it this far. If there are any trials I'd consider signing her up for it too.
This is amazing! I lost a cat some years ago because of chronic kidney disease. We were able to keep her fairly well with treatments and lots of care, but the disease progressed, as it does, and we had no choice but to euthanize her. I would love to see a treatment that could prolong other cats lives.

I hope the Japanese scientists publish soon. I’d love to see some peer review!
This may have saved Billi the talking cat.
Is there something similar for dogs?
