One of the cutest things while having a kitten is when you play with them and while playing they fall asleep and while you think how cute they are and if you should let him/her sleep they awake and are full of energy again and the playing just goes on as if nothing has happened.

My cat stayed with his mom for his first 10 weeks, got handled by humans daily and then got co-raised by my dog who is confident and taught my cat to look at me when in trouble or scared. He's the most confident, sweetest cat I know. He's super good at the vets.
A lot of this happened because my dog needs to go to the vet super often so he went when the dog went and got a lot of great exposure to the vets, I have the only cat I know who walks themselves into the vets and who doesn't bite or scratch when he gets his temp checked. I brought him everywhere I went for the first 6 weeks for exposure and learning in my arms.
He's super friendly to everyone and rolls over because he loves belly rubs.

In January of 2007, we inherited a 7-year-old calico female, Toesie. In June we wanted to get her a companion so we adopted an 8-week-old orange-and-white tabby boy, Rusty. After a week of mutual hissing, they became inseparable. She adopted him as her stepson. Almost every afternoon when we came home from work they would be asleep together in a chair with their legs all tangled up. Then they would chase each other around the house. He turned out to be a cool, mellow, 27-pound cat. All the neighbors loved him, he traveled with us across the U.S. 17 times in our motorhome and he lived a wonderful 15 years. Toesie did a great job raising him.

when it was feeding time, i'd put a piece of boiled chicken on a fishing line and pull it around for my cat to hunt. she would chase it around, wrestle it and in the end she pulled it free and ate it. the look of pride on her face for a successful kill was priceless.

Learning about the kitten stages has actually helped me understand my adult boy Rudy. He's around 6 yrs. I got him from my aunt who had him when he was a kitten (the guy she was dating was allergic to cats & her daughter wanted a dog, so Rudy was given over to me). He had no toys, no scratching post, and his cat tree was too small for his size & not very comfortable or interactive. As a result, although I've bought him plenty of toys & other furniture (something the siblings I lived with at the time hated cuz I was "wasting money on unnecessary things" as our family cats also had no toys or posts/trees), he hardly plays, and I think it's because he didn't really learn during that critical 6 month phase.
I'm hoping to get him a younger cat/kitten friend who might be able to encourage him into more playing. He's a happy loving cat otherwise, doubly so after I moved away from my stingy family this year.

It convinced me to adopt two kittens from a stray litter, and even though they're teenagers now, they don't try to push my 16-year-old cat's buttons too much. They'll get a little close to her to sniff noses or something sometimes and she hisses at them, but they don't stalk or pounce on her because they're getting all their energy out with each other (and with toys, of course). I think my senior cat's quality of life is much better than it would have been if I had only taken one kitten in. So thank you, Jackson!

I could really use this mans help right now, my dad thinks the only way to turn our 12 year old indoor outdoor cat a full indoor cat is to declaw him, every time I tell him its inhumane, he gets mad and says it's not his problem, he refuses to buy any piece of cat furniture. We've had this cat all 12 years of his life and he's never had a cat tree or a decent scratching post, I'm at the point to where I feel like I need to steal the cat in order to save him. Please like this post cause I need some real help right now.

    • @KM-pm6qe
      @KM-pm6qe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +59

Does your dad understand that declawing is actually amputating each toe at the first knuckle? Your cat is getting old enough to need to be indoors full time. If your father doesn’t care if the cat is harmed in that way, maybe he won’t care if the cat finds another home, either. Declawing cats is actually illegal in my state because it is recognized as cruelty (except for medical necessity).

My two cats just turned 1 year old last month. I raised them since they were about a week old. Bottle fed them for weeks, wiped their butt and helped them pee and poo. Never thought I could develop such a close bond with cats. They're normally somewhat independent. Not mine. They're such needy jerks 😄❤️ They've got each other, but they smother me constantly. They're more co-dependant than my puppy.

When my childhood cat Star passed at 18, our 11 year old cat, Belle (who grew up with Star as a constant influence) was devastated and visibly in morning. We initially searched for a rescue option, and found two we really liked. Then we found out they were actually litter mates. I can't imagine having separated Senua & Loki, and having each other along with the influence of Belle has really been a wonderful experience to watch. We got our newest and final addition, Guenhwyvar, last November when they were 13 months and she was about 7 month. She drives us all bananas still but she really rounds out the dynamic. 💓

Can confirm the wild child stage! We just adopted a five month old kitten after losing our 18 year old girl, and JT (for Captain Kirk) is a WILD CHILD. We're into the demonspawn kitty stage. I've had only senior cats since 2015ish and have quite forgotten what the kitten stage is like. JT has claimed all the stuffies in the house because those are better for him to chew on than my hand/arm/leg/whatever. Jackson Galaxy's My Cat From Hell series was hugely helpful in understanding the behaviors at the shelter amd now JT's sundowner hyperactivity.

My one year old has been with me for one month now, and he is exploring so much now. There is no door he doesn't want to see behind, and even better if there is something in there he can climb. I worry he's going to get himself stuck some place that I can't get him out. I really struggled a couple days ago getting him out from behind my washer and dryer. It's a very tight space, and once he found his way in, he couldn't jump high enough to get back out. I had to carefully move them until he could squeeze out in between them. He was in a total panic. Thankfully, a minute after he was out, he slept on the carpet as if it never happened.

    Hey Jackson and Team,
Just wanted to say thank you for these videos and advice. They are incredibly helpful.
We recently had a very special adult cat (Luna) die unexpectedly from lymphoma leaving behind an 8 week kitten playmate. (We got the kitten on your advice that they should have a social mate, and it enriched luna's life so much in the time they spent together.. we are so glad she had a friend before she passed).
We went back and adopted one of the kitten's siblings, and have been watching them grow and develop through some of these stages ever since. They are both 12 weeks atm.
It was incredibly hard losing our adult girl who had been an incredibly close and loving friend, and I am a little over cautious and nervous with these new kittens as a result of that experience with our adult.
Your videos have been incredibly helpful giving tips and helping me understand the behaviors I am seeing (they are wrestling as i type this). I just want them to have the best and happiest life I can give them, and your videos help me do that. I think Luna would approve.

I work in palliative care and I must say we are healing each other. She used to act like a roughly 8 week old even though the vet said she's likely around 6 months. She was very dependant and a total wallflower, sleeping and following me around. I got a great tower for her, heaps of different toys and now I know to get a 2nd litterbox ASAP. She has more personality than I do now! Always playing and loves to meet my friends and family, definitely acting like a teenager but listens to me if the answer is no because I make as much time for us as I can.

2 weeks ago I reduced a 5 month old orange male from the scary outside!!
Took time to gain his trust but I finally did.
So now I have a 5-6 month old in my home (which is not large) w TONS of cat toys, a cat tree near a window w feeders outside and lots of the fishing pole wands w feathers at the end. No small bells though. Those can be a dangerous choking hazard or they can get their nails caught in them. Not good.
Plenty of healthy wet food and 2 cat boxes.
From what I’ve gathered from this video … I’m in for one hell of a ride for the next several weeks 🎉

They regulate their feeding themselves (of course I measure how much they get but they tend to ration it themselves through the whole day) and toys get put to the side if not used but they can always access them.
Never had any problems, my cats are balanced and calm (aside from one of them hating me being in a different room if I'm home).
When I see they want to play I get their toys and engage them otherwise it's lots of cuddling and sleeping.
And yes, my cats DO know how to hunt properly. Aside from growing up with an older cat that was an avid hunter they love playing with toy mice and destroying them.

Ever consider feeding wet food or even better raw?

About the topic of food, my outdoor/indoor cat always had access to dry food(in a dispenser with lid sort of) and water, but wet food 2 times a day. I don't know if he really ate anything out there, he did bring in mice but he would never eat them, just play with them.

I had a cat I fostered when she was about 5 weeks old (and kept her for her entire life). I think the most heartbreaking thing early on was when I realized the baby face had changed to a grown up cat face. **sniff** My baby was all grown up.

I just want to thank you for this vid, its the 1st one I watched when searching for whats a normal kitten behavior like because honestly we just adopted a kitten and I was starting to doubt my decision, after watching your video I feel confident about it and we had already put a deposit on a 2nd kitten same age give or take a week or 2 max(different litter and rescue raised in a foster home) that I was seriously considering cancelling that. So a big Thank you, I hope I can get through these new weeks

I've just got an 8 week old kitten. She was socialised well, other animals, children, people, in a quite hectic and busy household. I've had her here less than 24 hours and she's bounding around playing with everything i got her, including the boxes i saved for her and my slippers. All wide eyed and getting into the adventure playground i cobbled together out of old furniture, cushions, bedding etc. Seems very confident and not startling at every new sound. It's quite a change from my previous kittens who weren't socialised well and were quite timid - they didnt stay that way. But the difference is huge.

It's amazing how different kittens can be, our first Rhubarb would swing on the underneath of the stair like they were monkey bars. And our new kitten toast is just total chill, loves to play but is nowhere near as wild as rhubarb was 🤣🤣

My two females are a year old, every single day is new. I tamed and vetted “Momma’s Last Litter” of five. We had litter upon litter at our apartment complex and I was determined to fix Momma Cat who was throwing 3-4 litters a year. Huge project due to COVID, $6/gallon gas, time of year, clinic vet shortage, no low cost local spay neuter places and an expensive spay complication. The impact on the population is amazing . I foster failed and have two of the most fun girls, constantly pranking me and being just so fun. The one with the serious complications is like a golden retriever in behavior. It’s easy to forget they were feral because they are so dang awesome.

My babies are turning 1 year in a few days (the 10th of this month) and I'm so incredibly happy I adopted both and they grew up with eachother. They are both HUGE cuddle-bugs (on their terms of course) and they light up my life more than I could have ever imagined 💕

My husband and I used to be foster parents for kittens without moms at the Humane society Boulder Valley. It was extremely rewarding but when you Foster a lot of kittens, be prepared for a huge mess and a little damaged carpeting. However, I wouldn't trade a moment.

I just adopted the 5th cat that has come into my life over the years. Each one was around 6 months at the youngest and about 10 years at the oldest. I never picked my cats, they picked me in unusual ways. This time around I adopted a 3 month old and OMG, they are sooooo much fun. I hadn't realized how special this phase is and how mutually beneficial it is for both the kitten and the human. At 3 months I found myself wondering how the fluff he is so capable, smart and FAST. He's like a Ninja and im pretty sure is part leprechaun because if you take your eye off him, he disappears like a fart in the wind, only to reappear like he was never gone or sneak up on you while you wonder where the fluff the slippery little booger went. Well that's all for now, my kitty (Rush) is currently MIA. (Wish me luck with a 4 years old Aussie, a 10 year old huge cow cat and a 3 month old main coon tuxedo that is loco 😜)

Great video very informative! We had a stray cat have babies in a box in the warehouse I work at. We took care of the mom so she could stay close to the babies and take better care of them. I would always see them and play with them when they opened their eyes and ears. At first they would sorta be shy, but after a week or so they started getting use to me holding them and petting them without them giving me the claw death grip and hissing lol. When they got to around 5 weeks i started fostering them at home. They just hid under a chair in my room for the first day, but the next day they were out and about playing with all the toys I had just bought them. In like a week they stopped being so shy and would sleep on my bed instead of hiding, and they love playing with all their toys. I got them use to getting their nails clipped, they were litter box trained the moment I provided them one they went to town lol. They’re also little piggies, they eat their food with gusto. I wish we could keep them all cause they’ve grown so attached, they just love to sleep on the bed with me every night. It’s gonna be a sad day when I have to take them to the shelter for adoption, but I hope I at least I gave them the best chance at finding a good home. I was able to keep one but I know we’ll both be sad when his siblings are gone 😔😢. I hope he’ll be ok cause he’s been with them since birth. I just feel so bad separating them but it wouldn’t be fair to keep them all when I don’t have the space or resources to provide for them once they grow 😔. At least I was able to give one a forever home and took care of his siblings the best I could, I hope somehow they’ll be ok.

As an owner of 3 cats I can confirm the teenager faze! 2 of my cats are brothers and they both went through a teenage faze except one of them was a punk who destroyed everything and the other was an emo, I could hear emo music playing in his head! And now they're both passed that faze and became mommy's little gentlemen
