    I love the remark on the good health at it's age, it reminded me of my grandparents cat. They had an 18 year old cat that still went outside half of the day, running and even hunting. He was super active and really sweet too, always wanting to be pet when around. And one day, a couple years ago now, it kinda gave us signs that it was over, and one night he just passed quietly. truely the greatest cat I've ever seen.

      Only if it helped him get rid of some irritations. Cats appreciate when you help them, not when you do lots of things to them that have no benefit to them. Cats operate by smells and if you wash them and get rid of a lot of the smells they are in serious trouble with other cats in their neighbourhood until their own smell grows back.

    So, seeing nobody say it: He did such a good job. 15 Years old, never been in that situation ... he stays very very calm. And i overall dont think, that he could not attack. To me it rather looks like he does definitly not like it ... but overall knows that its a good thing. And what I experienced: Sometimes cutting out the mates is way more easy and less stressful for the kitty, that beeing said for a 4 year old very fluffy cat :)

    She handled it OK, but we have decided to bath her once or twice a year, just to make sure it is something that doesn't freak her out too much.

      So my groomer explained to me that mats pull on the skin and essentially your cat is slowly being "scalped". Because they love being clean and your kitty was depressed and not grooming. The feeling of being scratched and having all that painful matting brushed out probably felt better than having it pulling at his skin. So afterwards he was so comfortable and felt motivated to clean himself again.

      When I was little, Dad was in the Royal Canadian Air Force (as it was known back then). I had a black tomcat named - yeah, so original - Tommy. We lived on a very small base in Northern Ontario and the base commander would call the house quite often for Dad to come pick us up. I would dress Tommy in doll clothes, give him my baby brothers bottle with milk in it, put him in my dolly's carriage and go to find Dad if he was late - in my little 3 yr old time-telling abilities. Back in the 60s, it wasn't unusual to see all the little ones outside with nobody worrying if we hadn't been seen because we were all off playing together. Mom even has pictures of Tommy and I outside, him allowing me to torment him instead of my dolly 😊

    The single best comb I've found for cats who do not like brushing is the Japanese-created Philocomb. I saw someone who used it on feral cats at shelters and got it for my brush-resistant cat early on and now she demands brushing multiple times a day. The curved teeth are made of resin and apparently just feel fantastic to cats. Not a de-matting comb, but after a cat is de-matted, it is great at maintaining their coat.

      exactly. and i think some people assume the stress of a bath is worse for a cat than having unclean fur and skin, but honestly its really not in most cases. the oil and dirt that cakes up and causes matting is sooo much more stressful and painful to live with all the time, than to get an occasional bath.

      Pretty much. Then again a lot of people have pets and aren't educated enough to make these calls. We really need to get rid of "never bathe cats" stigma. Desensitization is probably the BEST method for cats and dogs when it comes to these situations.
      Start them early even if they don't really need it, that way when it becomes necessary, they're not likely to worry as much. As the owner it's your job to think ahead.

    I'm not sure if its available in Canada, but in the US a new product recently came out called Solensia, its a once monthly injection for feline arthritis and its worked wonders for my 14y Olive. Solensia has been a miracle for my 8 yr old Maine Coon Poppy. She's had arthritis since she was 3 and it's been a challenge keeping her comfortable. I give her Adequan shots every ten days and she gets a shot of Solensia monthly. The difference in her since starting Solensia is remarkable. I've groomed both my MCs weekly since they were 12 weeks old but now I'm wishing I'd started bathing them too. Thankfully they both can still groom themselves.

      Solensia was a godsend for my 15 year old kitty with moderate arthritis. I was really resistant at first because it cost $92 per shot and they have to be given monthly. I used gabapentin at first. It worked, but Solensia works *much* better. When I saw the improvement in my kitty after just 2 shots I couldn't justify going back to gabapentin. Even at 18 or 19 my old lady kitty would be STRONG if she didn't like what was happening. The vet didn't believe us when we said that burritoing her didn't work to give her medication.
    We brought a towel and her to the vet and said "okay, show us what we're doing wrong." They tried. She got her front legs out and FOUGHT.
    Afterwards we were like "we told you." The vet, while breathing heavily: "..just bring her in for shots every few months."

She was a whopping 7 lbs of Queenly wrath for people being silly in her presence. We also had an incident when I accidentally scheduled her with the vet she didn't like when it as time to do her 6 month lab work. the vet took her off to the lab down the hall. She put up such a ruckus I'm sure she cleared the waiting room. When they brought her back, a tech had her burritoed in a towel, ears flat and growling. He goes to animal rehab for PT, cold laser, acupuncture and now shock wave therapy. It keeps him comfortable and has preserved muscle function. We also do daily massage. His stifles are about 3x the size of normal cats. Also have pet stairs for easier access, and constant access to heating pad. He’s a mellow, easy going old boy. What we do for those we love.

      Yeah. And it's good when a cat is being expressive. It's a show that they're mentally there, physically ok enough to expend the energy to be chaotic and express their needs. After owning a very special cat, I've come to have a different perspective of them when they don't like something and may scratch, bite, growl, hiss etc. It's them telling you they don't like something and it's a good sign of their growth, personality and overall health. It was stressful for him, but I was happy that the old man's still got his sass. When they lose it, it's normally a sign that they're reaching their time to cross the rainbow bridge. Usually. If it's old age. They have emotions just like us, and it's good to express them. It shows that he's still kicking very well ❤

    Ok people out there with all your questioning….professionals project a vibe that is different than the owner. When the owner does it, you communicate your anxiety and intimate feelings to your pet who can read you like a book. A skilled pro’s whole demeanour radiates calm, controlled, secure handling and the animal reacts differently. Pretend you have to give a needle to your own child. And then compare that to an experienced health professional. So respect is the name of the game.

    • @Killer_Turnip

    • @stellangios
      @stellangios 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      For sure. Tho, when you do have to stick a needle in your pet on the regular, you learn how to be professional about it. I thought I was going to faint the first time I gave my current special needs pet a shot (partly b/c she'd had bad drug reactions before) and now it's just a normal part of our week. But yes, people should respect and aim to emulate rather than fretting so much.

      I can tell you a little story. I broke my leg a few years ago and had surgery on it the next day. I had to have twice daily injections of a blood thinner to prevent clots for 2 weeks. I was told to inject myself in the stomach...WAIT, WHAT??? So, my sweet 45 year old son volunteered to do the injections in the back of my arm. The thing is, he faints at the sight of blood!❤ He managed through both weeks and only saw a drop of blood twice. I am pretty plump so lots of fat tissue there.

    My parents' cat is sort of like ninja. She's overweight, skittish, prissy, and getting up there in age so there's spot on her body she can't clean, like her lower back right above her tail, and she has really bad dander/dandruff and her hair is almost oily. My mom is horribly allergic (but loves her anyway) and my dad has arthritis in his hands so brushing her on the reg is difficult for them, and I've been trying to find a groomer who knows what they're doing with cats and won't stress her out too badly. I thought about just trying to give her a bath my self, but I kept reading it was bad for cats, but she NEEDS a deep clean. This video is really helpful because it gives me more of an idea of what to do, as well as a source to show my parents like "yeah, this is where she's at."
    They also NEED to put her on a diet, but my parents don't have the willpower to tell her no when she will BULLY THEM TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH for food.

    • @thoma9410
      @thoma9410 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I have my own very spicy void and agree 100 percent with you about the diet and proper food, but the oily fur may be because of an underlying medical condition, not just not grooming. My 19-year-old girl looks oily, but she has hyperthyroidism and chronic kidney disease. Both are managed, and she gets subQ fluids because of her kidneys. Her coat always looks SO much better after getting her fluids, not oily. I recommend getting a routine senior panel done on your parents' kitty to see if there's any underlying issues.
      As for the grooming part, they now make waterless shampoo and grooming wipes for cats. Just get the unscented ones. You can google which brands are recommended. Best of luck to you!
