  • How to Keep Indoor Cats HAPPY
I’m a big believer in keeping cats indoors. They will live longer, healthier lives. PERIOD. There are many who believe that cats cannot be happy if they are deprived of the outdoors - that is simply untrue. That said, there are definitely simple things you can do to enrich their lives and maximize their Mojo while keeping them safely inside. In this video I detail essentials for a happy and full indoor cat life.

I live in the UK and keep my 3 cats indoors. They are so much more relaxed than the indoor/outdoor cats I've had previously during childhood. People here think it is cruel, but so many cats get run over, stolen, poisoned or injured by evil people over here too. I have a catio for mine, numerous beds, cat posts, a cat tree, scratch pads and lots of toys!

    • @hannajung7512
      @hannajung7512 2 ปีที่แล้ว +71

I thought it is cruel for the longest time, too. But honestly... we keep our dogs indoor and on leashes, too. And I am absolutly positive, that dogs would be happier if they could roam free outside as well... but for dogs everyone understands that that is a bad idea and instead we developed a huge bunch of activities for dogs as substitute. I hope this attitude changes in Europe, because cats are a real problem for biodiversity, simply because they are so many, and their prey shrinks in numbers every year and will be gone if we don't increase our efforts to protect them. (Exception: rats).

I grew up with cats that would be outdoor cats and only one of the 4 cats we had made it past the 10 years and the rest of them tragically passed away. came to mention this! cats are considered invasive in MANY places (including but not limited to the US and Australia) so please be sure to do your research if you are thinking about allowing your cat to go outdoors. i think harness training would be a great alternative since you can monitor your cat's behavior and they still get to enjoy the outdoors! also PLEASE do not let the animal societies who claim cats are not invasive to fool you, they absolutely ARE invasive and the people who lead those kinds of programs often have no idea what they are talking about. only trust reputable scientific journals and peer-reviewed articles in regards to topics concerning invasive species :)

In the end she was inside with me , diapered , and she would let me know she loved and appreciated our time. My old boy was terrified of the outdoors. He would love looking out of the window, but as soon as he had to go out (to go to the vet) his hair would just fall out and he would moan meow haha
Just had to have him put to sleep. 17 years old and he was in very rough shape, poor old guy. Miss him.
About 7 years ago, he nearly died from a blockage in his bladder. I'll never forget the woman at the vets office (the vets wife actually) telling me "It's going to be really expensive. It's just a cat." I was a struggling musician at the time but still said "Just do it!" then I went and sold my 1978 American Strat, I took a serious hit on it but it was enough to cover the bill. It was my gigging guitar too. I would do it again in a heart beat. Unfortunately there was no amount of money that could save him this last time... I probably put it off longer than I should have, but I didn't want to let him go.

I have had 18 cats. So clearly I have watched over several deaths. The worst thing I have done was to keep them going once I realized that they were not well. Cats are amazingly tough, and they will not show pain or discomfort. Recently my 16 year old cat began to show signs of sickness, and the vet said that she was deathly ill. After many previous experiences, I was wise to the event, and I had the vet give her the shots to take her life before, thank God, she really started to suffer. I will never again prolong my cat’s life just so that I can spend more time with him or her. It is very important for us to recognize our responsibility in this matter.

@@annabeinglazy5580 totally. My cat feeding routine is to go to the kitchen and prepare the food, then I let it warm it up for a few minutes - I always shoot for 10 and normally make it, so my cat knows how long this "few minutes" is supposed to take. If I get distracted he will come over, "mmmmmmrrrr" and pat my arm to remind me it's time. I have actually verified that his timing is spot on, mind you - this is not in my imagination or some kind of wishful thinking :D As you say, they do indeed know the routine.

I would also like to remind folks that the only living thing that has the same energy as a kitten...is another kitten. Adopting two at a time provides great companionship and learning opportunities for them, and means you sometimes get to watch them rolling around and racing each other on the living room floor instead of having to provide appropriate play. I love watching cats play together, preferably with a senior cat on my lap :)

So when I try to find homes for them, especially because they come from a big family of other cats where they've cuddled play together wrestle together just have general fun together sleep together eat together.... after all that I don't want to bring them to another family by themselves. To. me that's a little bit mean.... we need to think of the the kitty cats well-being, not just ourselves.; but their happiness too. so I always try to encourage people to take at least two if not three but at least two so they'll have each other...... if a person or family only wants to take one I won't do it and I tell them the reasons why. they are better together to have another feline there of their own kind. Yes we can love them and show them attention but not constantly. When another of their own kind is there they can play and cuddle together!!!

I'm so glad you encourage keeping cats indoors but leash training the ones that seem interested. When I was a kid my gran had many cats that went in and out as they liked, pretty much everyone did this back then. We stopped doing that when our beautiful giant grey tomcat was hit by a car. He walked up the driveway with a fractured skull, a torn ear, he lost an eye and had a broken jaw. We fed him with a tiny spoon for months and months while his jaw was wired shut. Fortunately, he made a full recovery and lived a happy life indoors. Cars, foxes, wolves/coyotes, boar and ofc cruel, shitty people--- the risk is great for the outdoor cat. All it takes is one time. Keep them inside, or take precautions, don't let them out alone.

I'm always going to keep my cat indoors personally, because even though I rescued him and I haven't known him since he was a kitten, it's pretty obvious that he's used to being indoors. He's scared of most things that are outside. Also, we live in southern california in the desert, and there's a lot of coyotes outside that my cat would not be able to protect himself from. The indoor life is the obvious choice for my cat.

Shelter cats sadly are indoor cats, with a few exceptions. One thing that you will notice in shelter cats is whether they are close to window and listening to you (indoor), or close to window ready to jump out(outdoor). There are other differences, but this is the big one I noticed about cats. Note, this is without any prey animals or movement around.

That reminded me of my time when I still live in a Gated Community. Theres some Karen and a couple of stubborn old coot lived there that "own" outdoor cats. One day, many households put complain about problems related to cats over population. I also have cats, so I'm tried to be a good member of community and pitch in for solution. Im actually already suspicious that those Karen and Old Coots said nothing (it's obvious that the cats is theirs), while the Karen's husband basically said that they're fine with everything and will follow the community decision. Ended up on voting whether to let each household to deal with it by themselves or to force cat owners to put their cat indoors... ALL vote agree on cat being indoor.
A week after that, Old Coots refuse to keep cat indoor because "its how they always do", the security that tasked to catch any cat that run out is too cowardly to actually catch the cat, while the Karen's cat somehow went "missing" while they grumble about the Community decision being too authoritarian... shitheads dont even say anything in discussion yet expect us to respect them.
Just keep reminding to keep the cats indoor and, if it really bother you, try to get local animal lover community involved.

UK here - Growing up we always had indoor/outdoor cats and I just accepted this as being the norm. I always heard of other people's cats meeting unfortunate fates outside but since it never happened to mine, I put it down to bad luck, and my family continued to let ours out every day.
Then we lost our beloved gentleman to a car and I was heartbroken. My entire view changed. While my family still let our remaining cats out, and I don't judge anyone who does so, I decided that as soon as I had left home and got my own pets, they'd remain inside. I just bought a cat clicker and I have two sisters that don’t look anything alike that I got at seven years of age from a household that couldn’t keep them any longer. I got them two years ago and it was pretty obvious from the get-go that at least one of them had been seriously abused. She has made great progress coming out of her shell which is so heartwarming! There couldn’t be a better gift than to watch an animal that’s been abused, slowly start trusting again. They were both indoor cats supposedly. But there are a lot of feral cats in my community, so her sister kitty feels the need to protect our house. Ironically, though, they’re supposed to both have been spayed/neutered. And unfortunately, the scaredy cat, the one that was abused, the most, still hisses at her sister once in a while. They’re pretty competitive, or rather, she is competitive. Do you have any suggestions on how to alleviate the competition? I attempt to pet both of them at the same time, and play with both of them at the same time, but if you have any other ideas, I am all ears! Thank you so much for caring enough about these kitties and their owners 😻😻

We're lucky enough to have a screened in porch so we give him daily opportunities to come out with us and places to hang out and check out our backyard with lots of wildlife, from squirrels to birds to the groundhog that lives under our shed. Dervish LOVES it out there. Definitely do your best to make a catio. And if you have one, give them perches and hidey holes where they can hang out while "outside."

Now we teach them trick with just treats and it works fine ^^

Where I live, the winters are cold and dark, so I leave some lights on in the house and play quiet music for them when I leave for work.I also keep the heat the same temperature as if I was home, so they're warm and cozy. I can't prove it, but if think they appreciate it.

My female must be an outlier. I got her and another stray months apart and wish I had never had her spayed. She is still wonderful now, but I keep the male in a separate part of my condo and she comes out on my stories high deck with me. She only ever will and would come out when I was with her and never wanted my un-neutered male’s attention. He got out two times and r** her. Otherwise I would have not spayed her. She has been traumatized by the outdoors though. The only sounds she doesn’t panic at are the ones made by me.

@@silllykitten329 I fixed them both. His personality didn’t change at all. He is still awful to her and still an ass in general. She isn’t nearly as sweet as she used to be. I regret fixing her but I know it is better for a cat’s health to do so. Obviously I am glad I did for that reason. The risks are small but I feel like I lost her when it happened at the same time. She isn’t the same cat in the slightest.

@@Rattlsnke I would honestly consider to maybe re home one of your cats, because it sounds like the two really shouldn't be living together. Alternatively, You can also maybe try re introduction? the other reason to keep cats in is to protect local wildlife populations. Cats DECIMATE small rodent and bird populations, and don't eat most of what they catch (probably for the best but still).

My cat had to tough it out and suffered as a fully outdoor and partially feral cat for 5 years and he knows better that indoor = vastly superior easy life. Cats don’t like suffering starving and getting beat up by other cats out in the bushes they want warm cozy safety
