I worked at a U-Haul hub, where we had about 15 of those 30 footers, we had to maintain and move them around the area to the rental shops. A word. We always avoided 1st gear, and started from 2nd gear, when empty. Took off perfectly and saved that granny gear for when it's needed. I was gonna mention the governer on it. Kept it at 55 mph and sucked that gas down fast. I used to drive one towing another one behind me, to deliver it long distance to areas needed. Was quite a battle.
Not a y block ,its an FE / FT series hd truck engine. It replaced the old y block. The y block had distributor at the back of engine . The Ft series was available in 330/361/391 /428 displacement s . Used in medium duty f series and b series school buses from mid sixties through 1977 when it was replaced by the 385 series hd 370/ 429 big block.
You should have added #2 to the title. ☺️ Back in the 70's you didn't rent a U-Haul unless you were moving out of state. Local moves were done by borrowing someone's pickum up truck. 😂 The big thing in our area is making old vehicles into demolition derby cars if they can't be made in mint condition. 😊
My family still doesn’t rent uhauls even for out of state. When I retired and moved from Kentucky back to Texas, my kids and siblings showed up with trucks and trailers and moved me back. It took two days and one motel stay, but it was a lot cheaper than paying U-Haul.
@joannabowers1358 same here . Two of my sisters flew out to Boston then took a Uber to my place in Southbridge, Massachusetts while I went to Worcester, Massachusetts and got a U-Haul trailer and we all loaded up.what we could into the trailer and the bed of my 2019 Toyota Tundra and spent two days driving back to where I was born in Upper Michigan. 😊
Yes, Epic!! Wow, you got it running!! It came kicking and screaming out of the 70s. You and rebuilt carburetors, too, ugh. Amazing work if you ask me. Driving it is much worse than following it. The multifaceted sides of Robert shine!! Enjoyed this through the skills, frustrations and woes. You made it!! 😊 Great editing too. Time lapse seemed like normal speed 😂😂😂!Especially on the tail end of the 6 month journey! I bet it seemed like 6 months in one day. Great job!! 🎉💪⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍♥️♥️
Yeppers years ago my sister had one of those truck's, just like that one. I help her move it once about 10 miles. It took us 2 days because it sat for 20 years or so. Watching you guys took me back. Thanks 👍 for sharing.
Its a bad accelerator pump on the carburetor Robert . They probably didn't replace it during the rebuild . Any good parts store has them in stock . 10 to 20 minute fix.
@@andreamills5852 But even with that the carb would work wouldnt it? IT would still recieve the WOT gas, as I know the acc. pump is for extra fuel when you press 100% of the pedal, not when you are at wot
Robert pretty interesting nice to see you helping your friend Lewis out on this project. Your knowledge never ceases to amaze and impress. Thanks for sharing this with us
This was so riveting to watch. You Haul, the SlowHaul U-Haul! You remind me so much of my uncle. He did the same sort of thing way out in the in the country, near the shores of Lake Michigan where jobs are somewhat difficult to find. He worked for the county. Congratulations on getting it to run and getting it there. With my luck we would have been stopped by a cop and ticketed. Honestly, It was really good to see you two tinkering and thinking. You did very well.
In 1969, I drove one of those from Birmingham, Alabama, to my hometown I West Central Arkansas. Loaded furniture that day drove all night into the next day, none stop except for gas. I was totally wasted. Had my then ex-wife who was pregnant with me. Yes, it would not go over 55mph.
I'm thinking there must be a heck of a late rental fine on this truck. The U-Haul adventure in the 1980s was predicting how far it would travel before it died.
Hey Robert I have a governed carb on my 79 gmc 6000. I rebuilt the carb and it did the same thing the u-haul did, I noticed looking down inside the carb that the butterflies weren't opening while it was running and giving it throttle. Reason being the vacuum on the governor was holding it shut instead of letting it open. I disconnected the vacuum line and plugged it, It ran fine after that. But thing to do is put a non governed carb on it. All governor's are for is to keep the driver from over revving the motor and blowing it up.
Well Robert I never knew I would enjoy watching two guy work on an ancient u haul truck but I did!! Also I enjoyed the Georgia scenery as you flew down the highway😊. I was born and raised in Dekalb county, a suburb of Atlanta now. I miss my home state although South Carolina terrain is much the same. But it isn’t home. Glad you made off the highway
Well, definitely a challenge but also looks like a labor of love. Bottom line you got it running and to its new home and nobody got hurt just dirty!😂. Good video Robert... I love your fedora!!👍😊

If the fuel has any water in it, that will also help keep it from completely starting. You definitely have the spark and firing seems to be good. I would've got a bottle of fuel treatment to run through the entire fuel system. Ya never know. This reminds me of constantly putting more & new parts for my old Plymouth Velara when I was 17. Sounds like a governed carburator issue, and there is multiple settings on these, as they were on grain trucks of that era too. Junkyard Digs had this style truck and carburator issue, which Kevin rebuilt, and then it too lagged. To find out, it had to be on setting 3 or 4 of the higher notch settings to keep it from bogging down.
At min 1:03.33, the driver said something profound to me. He says: this is gonna be a good truck! That is awesome. Most of us see a pile of trash; this dude see a daily worker. I love this shit!
Wow! This takes me way back!!! My parents always hired movers. Until 1979 when we moved from Ohio to Florida. My dad decided this was the cheapest way to go. Now I don’t know years of those older Ford trucks, or how long Uhaul used to run them, but the one we rented was identical!! Same 330! So nose to tail and floor to roof full, and towing a 26’ Owen’s boat, we got an EPA best of 3 mpg!!!! I was following in the family car, a seven month old Buick, Electra 225 with a 350, and because he couldn’t go more than about 50 mile an hour. The Buick was averaging about 26 miles to the gallon! Great video! What are the future plans?
I have a 1976 f700 with a 391 and governor system. The governor carb works fine. The problem i had was the distributor oil seal was leaking into the governor line and not allowing the butterfly's to open enough. I disabled the governor system and kept the vacuum butterfly carb. The carb works like a variable Venturi carb and only opens the butterfly's as much as the engine can use determined by vacuum, that's how they made these engines survive in medium duty trucks. I would highly advise you to keep the vacuum butterfly carb and disable the distributor governor. That will fix the problem without overloading the engine from a non governed carb. The distributor part of the governor system was only to prevent the engine from exceeding the 3800 rpm redline.
Reminds me of the misadventure I had with a 1979 F-600 flatbed dump. Rebuilt the Holley, the kit came with the incorrect gasket, ended up with a vacuum leak behind the carb, blamed the carb, replaced it, then found the leak! Had to replace the master cylinder, then the vaccuboost unit under the cab, and some wheel cylinders. After that, it was finally ready to drive back home, but unbeknownst to me the eBay electric fuel pump the previous owner installed, couldn’t keep up with the 8mpg truck. Kept running out of gas every time I climbed a hill. When I finally figured it out, I bought another from a parts store and it was bad right out of the box! It took half a day to drive what should have been an hour trip! I will say, now that it is sorted out, it can sit for a year and when I hit the key it fires right up. They are tough old trucks.
Hey Robert!!!! ....it is the "governor" on the carb which prevents you from accelerating [the more pedal you give it- the slower it will go!] Put a different carb on it. - jfm
When working on projects like this, at some point it becomes personal. There's that invisible line you cross, don't know exactly where but you feel it. I've never heard good things about Holly carbs, and know nothing about governers, but I agree with you. Hope you figured it out, and glad you guys made it!
You'll blow that industrial up without a governor. They are not made for high rpm. Those trucks are just slow, they all have a nickname regarding something slow... I just worked on one that's now blue with the graphics "The blue snail" painted on it. I've heard a few. Slow yes, move a house? Yes.
Hello Robert Watched a lot of your Videos over here in Alabama. Enjoy them all. Really like this type videos. You guys sound like you worked on a few before. Just a thought does the vacuum and or mechanical advance work on the distributor.
Robert, back in the 70's there were carbs designed with "governors" which many and most of government vehicles were fitted with so you couldn't accelerate over 50-mph and too at very slow progression. Advance your timing on your distributor with a different carb and you will have remarkable improvement. - jfm
I really don't have a clue about what I'm talking about! I've just got 27 years of helping my husband work on our vehicles. It was fun and I learned a lot but there is soooo much more to learn about vehicles and nowdays they are computerized.
Robert, It's so obvious you are a good old Georgia boy the way you both got that road hog running. There's a name for the truck "Road Hog Running"... I like it! Cheers, Rik Spector
The original signe you found that said lowest cost is interesting this old u haul even has what looks like it's original emergency roadside kit in the the box back there
I remember those old U-Haul trucks in the 80's when I was a teenager. I would have hated to have to move across the country in one of those. They were governed at 45mph.
Enjoyed watching with that great videoing you sure have Uncle Walters blood flowing through your veins. How old were you when you started working on old cars?
I was probably about 14 when I really started working on cars for the first time. And yes, Uncle Walt taught me everything I know about photography and filming!
Old style Ford starter used in v8 cars ,the fe/ft series and 300 six and the small 6 and small block v8 through 91, and replaced by gear reduction solenoid equipped starter . The 385 series 370/429 / 460 used a similar one except with solenoid.

How is Uncle Ken?
I grew up with a dad who loved working on cars and this takes me back. I spent a lot of time in the garage watching him work. :)
You should take it back to U Haul and tell them, sorry I was a little late returning this. 😉
lol yeah

No, leave it after they close, cuz you don't want to have to pay the late fee.

You'll blow that industrial up without a governor. They are not made for high rpm. Those trucks are just slow, they all have a nickname regarding something slow... I just worked on one that's now blue with the graphics "The blue snail" painted on it. I've heard a few. Slow yes, move a house? Yes.
Hello Robert
Watched a lot of your Videos over here in Alabama. Enjoy them all. Really like this type videos. You guys sound like you worked on a few before.
Just a thought does the vacuum and or mechanical advance work on the distributor.
Awesome ❤❤❤
Nice job guys
Quite an adventure!
Indeed!
What an adventure!!!❤❤❤
I’ve saw some shade tree mechanics before but these guys hold the title
Thanks.
Robert,
It's so obvious you are a good old Georgia boy the
way you both got that road hog running.
There's a name for the truck "Road Hog Running"... I like it!
Cheers,
Rik Spector
All you need to do for it to rum smoothly is replace the Computer Ignition Module (😅🤣😂).
The original signe you found that said lowest cost is interesting this old u haul even has what looks like it's original emergency roadside kit in the the box back there
Sounds good Should be a good Build
my family moved in 88 in the Ryder version of this, it was a POS in 88, some of those trucks really got beat and were not maintained
❤ When this project is completed I think it should be called the " U - Hol - i - day " 😊
This old truck has a lot of possibilities, however, it's gonna need a LOT of work !!!
That would make a cool race car hauler
Sounds like everything underneath needs greased real bad!
Rusty brakes
I remember those old U-Haul trucks in the 80's when I was a teenager. I would have hated to have to move across the country in one of those. They were governed at 45mph.
Really! Aren't you overwhelmed as it is? 😂
Louis owning a Uhaul doesn’t overwhelm me 😅
Probably the float, did you set the height of the float?
Enjoyed watching with that great videoing you sure have Uncle Walters blood flowing through your veins. How old were you when you started working on old cars?
I was probably about 14 when I really started working on cars for the first time. And yes, Uncle Walt taught me everything I know about photography and filming!
Old style Ford starter used in v8 cars ,the fe/ft series and 300 six and the small 6 and small block v8 through 91, and replaced by gear reduction solenoid equipped starter . The 385 series 370/429 / 460 used a similar one except with solenoid.
Give it a few seconds ,before shifting into low ,so gears don't grind .
Carburetor and vacuum advance.
