The mirrored piece is called a dry sink and is where people kept those large pitchers and matching bowls. Murphys Oil Soap to clean and moisturize.

You pronounced "malady" perfectly! As a Southern boy, however, "frigid" is probably unknown to you in daily speech so it's pronounced like "fridge"....which is kinda appropriate now that I think of it. Enjoyed the video and hope you can follow up on that article of the soldier via microfiche at a library. I've heard "odie's oil" is good for reconditioning wood but I'm no expert on that. Have a great day.

Thanks for the links! I love the old. But I’ve given up on our thought of moving to west Tennessee or North Carolina, like we were going to. I hate heat & humidity & y’all got way too many snakes. I wouldn’t be able to go swimming even. To cool off.. so guess we’re stuck in Massachusetts. The suck-butt idiotic liberalist state in the country…except CAL. They’re their own country! lol Your channel sure wouldn’t be appreciated up here. The powers that be would wanna tear everything down, erase history! History we maybe can LEARN FROM! But I LOVE IT & so appreciate all of you guys. No spring chickens traipsing through meadows. Uh uh, the way you tackle all the weeds & vines. Makes me tired just watching. Have a great rest of your day, brother! Michelle in Boston

I have to agree with the above sentiment. Give it a good cleaning with Murphy's Oil Soap for the time being, and go back and do a detailed deep cleaning later on. Once it dries, give it a good oiling with a quality furniture oil.

Robert! I think I have the perfect top for your wash table. Meaning i started a quilt top with civil war replica prints. Long story short I think it would perfectly cover the top if your interested? Curently it measures unfinished at 41-1/2 L ×21" . H
I can finish it this coming week and send it out to you. Its an hourglass block quilt pattern I used.
I was going to make it a full size quilt but got bored with it lol 😅.
Im not asking money for it. It would be a gift. My quilts are always made for someone as a gift. 😊

If you grab a bar of soap and rub it along the wooden runners it will slide much more smoothly. You will need to wipe that wood with some serious wood polish. It is probably pretty dry so you will need many applications till it soaks in. It can crack more as it dries out.
I suspect there would have been a marble top for that washbasin.

Robert, I think if you just vacuum the old washstand and then wipe it down with some Murphys Oil Soap in warm water it should lift the dirt off. I’ve also had luck with automotive hand cleaner painted on with a new brush. But don’t let that stay on too long because it can take the finish off. It’s perfect for your old farmhouse!

I love the way the people in your area in Georgia , especially you Robert, are deeply rooted in family history and can trace back as long as 100 years or more. The connection is so amazing keeping memories and family alive. Sure beats the anonymity of living in modern apartments.❤

I have some newspapers saved from different family members around that time period. Back then Atlanta was a small town.

That little dresser with a mirror that had 1940 newspapers in it was called a commode. They usually had a marble top. They had a china bowl and pitcher placed on it for washing up. These were very common before indoor plumbing.

I'd love to see the furniture catalog as I am in possession of my great-grandparent's East Lake Parlor set (4 of the 7 pieces) from when they married in 1892! I'm glad I'm not the only one that has too many chairs (almost all inherited from one family home or another - currently have 10 stored in spare room dating back to last 1800s to early 1900s). :) One day I'd love to see your house finished but the process is also worth the time to watch your progress! Keep up the love of history and the preservation of things of early Georgia!

It looks like my great grandparents bedroom set from 1880s.
Your washstand should have a marble top. Very nice.

Love the old papers, so sad that Mother probably never got to visit her son's grave in Honululu. Funny all the personal's announcing who's got who visiting, sounds like the town's gossip 😂

As far as the wash stand... Howard's "restor a finish" (oil)a long with their "feed 'n' wax" (beeswax) after a good wash with Murphy's oil has done me well many times. Sorry if I missed another comment of the same.

After cleaning use Old English Furniture Polish. One formula contains a dark stain that will even out the color. Test on the back.
