    It is really looking good. The way you take care of your equipment by summer it will look and operate like it was new. I am always very impressed with how you make so much production and the machines just seem to loaf along with no banging and screeching, that is the mark of a OUTSTANDING operator!!!

    I like these instructional/how-to vids a bit more than just the plain moving dirt vids!

    Round about Christmas of '97, a buddy of mine and I were on the $hi+ list of our Shop NCOIC. Don't remember why. We had a SEE with a bent boom. Now, bear in mind we were the Mechanics, NOT the Operator and neither one of us were Engineer Equipment Mechanics. We had to have the boom swapped and back up and operable before we could take off for the 4 day for Christmas. We started at 0830 that morning. (Came in early) Started working on that stupid pin after Lunch. We beat, pried, beat some more. Dang thing would not budge. Even our NCOIC was getting aggravated with it. We adjusted, picked up on it. Put it down. Side to side it just wasn't moving. We thought maybe the slight bend in the boom had put it in a bind. We had just about gotten to the point that it was going to have to go to 3rd Shop, who was SUPPOSED to be doing it anyway, when I leaned down against the pivot just to catch my breath. (20 lbs of Sledgehammer is heavy when you're swinging it like a baseball bat) That POS pin clattered onto the floor. It scared all 3 of us so bad we almost didn't catch the boom as it free swung on the overhead crane and about popped our NCO in the chest. After 12+ hours of beating the bejeezus out of that thing it just fell out with just maybe a mm of movement from 170lbs of wore out Soldier leaning on it just right🤦. We got her back together and finally left @0245.

    I've found that having the bucket up off the ground makes the second pin super easy to get in... both can move a little for the final alignment...even on 96 in. 5 yard buckets...

    It's nice to see it done the "old way" but after watching this, I understand now why someone developed the quick connect.

    I neither own nor operate heavy equipment for a living, so I probably
    don't know what I'm talking about, but sometimes I am lucky enough to operate a few different machines. I am a Tool Maker and Machinist so I like the line bore approach as suggested in some of the comments here ( and ask the person with only one eye if you should wear safety glasses). My main question is shouldn't the shims be placed at least one on each side of the boom as to prevent premature wear between the bucket and the boom? I mean the bucket and boom would be rubbing and galling constantly right? Hence the reason for the shims except to providing proper side to side play. Thanks in advance for any clarification to my thinking...and great videos Chris...

    Great video! It sucks when you need to hammer them in. Older equipment takes patience to deal with, not like the new stuff that you swap buckets in under 20 seconds.

    Hey what exactly do you do for your job? Are you a 49er or just a heavy equipment operator ? Because the crap you do looks fun as hell, I love sitting in heavy equipment and just digging and moving stuff.

    Why is the pin so long? Just a suggestion, a 12lb sledgehammer and cut off the handle to 18-20” long ! A lot easier to handle! I have a 16 lb and use it for a lot of projects! Has the driving power but easier to handle! I’m a retired welder and I’d cut the ears off the buckets and weld the good ones on the big bucket! But I’ve seen them order new ears!

    Tilting bolt is much easier to put place when lifted bucket, at start like you did at end. I have old excawator where is no NTP contact, so change bucket from bolts, siometimes 2-3 times in day.

      I was just thinking thats the whole reason right there somebody designed a quick hitch L.O.L. i never had one on my Backhoe and after a while you get pretty good at lining pins up. It makes you keep the cylinder maintenance up to.

  • @Puffie40
    @Puffie40 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think something's wrong with the one bushing - there should not be that kind of visible clearance in the hole, and if it was ran for any length of time with that loose pin, those holes are gonna be hammered oblong.
    To properly fix that stick, its going to need to be line bored; I doubt anything from a dealer would fix it - my budget option might be to get a machine shop to custom make some bushings for the stick and a new pin.

    • @regsparkes6507
      @regsparkes6507 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Puffie40 is 'right on the money' when he suggested new custom made bushings and while the machine shop is at it,.have them put a tapered or 'bullet nose' on one end of each pin. This will make aligning the holes and driving the pins home , a whole lot simpler for you.
      Chris, may I make a safety suggestion too,...PLEASE wear safety glasses when you are driving those pins.I have seen what happens without glasses,.and it is not nice at all.
