Painting Recreations

- I recreated every painting in SM64 using in-game resources, and these are the results.
This is a video concept that I've been wanting to make for years, but put it off because I didn't have the proper tools to do it justice until recently. I think creating this video required the greatest variety of tools/knowledge/features of any video I've made, since I had to do so many things to make the recreations just right.
Imgur album of all the images: imgur.com/a/SCqfDb5
Credit to the following people for helping make this possible:
- Dane Bouchie for creating STROOP.
- Peter Fedak for making a rom hack of SM64 where we can position the camera anywhere.
- Kaze Emanuar for creating the "show variables on screen" hack and for removing the draw distance in BBH/WF.
- Dennis for showing me how to disable the falling snow in CCM so that the snow would stay suspended in midair.
I used the following programs to make this video: Mupen64, STROOP, MHS, Cheat Engine, Toad's Tool, MS Paint, Photoshop, PowerPoint, Excel, Sony Vegas, and a program I found on the internet by Rui Lopes that allowed me to overlay a transparent image over other windows on my desktop.
I used the following STROOP features to make this video: modifying an object's position/angle/size/release status/interaction status/shadow/graphics/graphics timer/animation timer/visibility/room/draw distance, duplicating objects, modifying triangle positions, modifying the camera's position/angle/FOV, modifying the water level, suspending/positioning snow, placing text on the screen.

SM64 HD remakes should aim to make the worlds look like the paintings. thatd be pretty neat.
Dang, that would be cool.
Could you imagine the kind of game that has Goombas that look like the THI painting? That would be so sick...
I'd also love to see a WF remake that brings it closer to the original art they did, too! I am so curious about how this art style would look in motion.

What about you? 🤔🤔🤔
Bowser's pictures look like me when I accidentally open the phone on front camera mode...
I've made myself a script that takes a photo from my laptop's webcam every time a wrong password was typed in.
Every so often I find pictures of sleepy myself right in the slight shock moment of seeing the LED light near the camera flash.
I'd say, minus a slight head tilt, that matches up pretty closely.
@@Architector_4 That script sounds immensely useful! And sometimes funny, too!
Well, I only bring my laptop to the college classes, and always insist on keeping my bag with it with myself or locked behind a door, so I never actually got any photos of anyone... Besides, to be honest, I feel like if someone were to mess with my laptop, they would probably just steal it instead lol
So you have your thumbs up and have the word "KooPa" in front of you?🤠

Well then just woooosh. (that was the joke above your head)
I never really noticed how bad Peach's painting looked in this game. Its weird, since the stained glass version of her looks fine.
Maybe because Bowser created it? I dunno.
Maybe was it because they wanted her to take the same space on the painting as Bowser (which would explain the large orange hair, matching roughly with Bowser's shape and color) so that the transition effect would be nicer ?
its because her painting fades into bowser's, so they made certain details fade better. like her eyes becoming his nostrils i.imgur.com/Di5PRq1.gif
Reminds me of that japanese Mario movie with the blue dog thing.

The accuracy of those Hazy Maze Cave maps is pretty amazing
Yeh imagine working on that like 25 years ago

You gotta love the level of detail the programmers put into adding certain details to make the map look more... mappy too haha.
They also reused those in DS. It might be entirely possible that they made the level around the map.
Yeah HMC was one of my favourite levels because I thought it was so cool you could actually follow the maps
Dude, I will always have a high degree of admiration for how much beauty you recognize in this game. From showing us how Mario and Peach's blinks are intertwined to making 5 bob-omb's explode in sync in one of your TAS competition submissions, and now these extremely beautiful works of artistic recreation??? You're fucking incredible dude. I'm so happy for all of the work you put into SM64 for TH-cam and the gaming community. Thank you for existing.

Thanks a lot Pannen, your work is amazing.
Pretty much almost all are cases of the developers' original intentions in the portraits vs. what they were capable of making with technology constraints at the time.
And isn't that beautiful, in a weird way?

Yeah, you can draw a picture, but not EXACTLY translate it into your video game without space or limitations.

My favourite is the "Heave-Ho Logo" at 6:46. I can't stop smiling when I look at the recreation.

Now all he needs to do is take up theoretical physics and unify gravity into quantum mechanics.
I really like the idealized pictures they use ingame, it helps put the image in your mind as to what it should look like without the limitations of N64 graphics. Like even though the enemies and water in wet dry world don't look like that, I still think of them like that in my mind, same with things like tall tall mountain and Whomp's fortress. I think it really solidified what the game was going for and helped shape how I think about the game sorta like an NES manual with illustrations would.
If anything the video shows how much our memories of the game are condicioned by minor elements and oficial artwork, i never had realized how cheap the Boos looked in the game

The 3D Bowser model in this game has to be one of the weirdest phenomenons of Nintendo. It looks absolutely nothing like any previous concept art, and in the DS remake they managed to make it perfect with less polys...
This is one of the first times they ever made 3D models for these characters, so I guess it took the developers a couple of tries to get it right.
There's no way the ds remakes had fewer polys. Less resolution, sure.
They made high-quality renders of all the characters, so I don't think it was their first time making a model of Bowser. However I did hear that the models were made as though coming off a conveyor belt; one after another, and none were replaced, so they didn't get a chance to touch it up. And it may have been their first shot at making Bowser for the game.
Also, I don't know about Bowser, but Mario's model does have less polygons in the DS remake.
The tools available at the time were also way worse than modern ones. This was 1996 we're talking about, windows 95 was hot off the presses, the internet was barely off the ground. As for quality, the DS remake has access to higher resolution textures and bone based animation. Where as the n64 was throwing extra polygons just so they could have hard color cuts and caps to the joints on the character's limbs. And yeah, on top of that it was rushed.
Bowser's in game model looks a lot more like his sprite in the first super mario brothers game. I love it, like all the models in Mario 64 it's just very cute
So unnecessary yet so enjoyable and relaxing to watch
Starry Sky’s my favorite
Yeah, that is such a dream-like and relaxing painting, and his recreation of it was nearly spot on besides the shades.
That is also Pannen's brother's favorite painting:

Isn't that funny how weird Boos look in SM64 considering they had art of the face they'll stick with for the rest of the franchise?
It's because they are animated (yes I know the original comment was a joke)
Also considering boos are less complicated like bowser so you'd think it'd be easier to execute.
They were first redesigned in Mario Party 4, which was the design that stuck.
Bob-Omb Battlefield's Painting in the base game, genuinely looks like theres a thunderstorm/war going on, and the recreation looks like they're just heading out on a Picnic.

I’m not going to lie, Rainbow Ride and the Jolly Roger pictures are genuinely beautiful, especially the US one.
Great video, really interesting to see the comparisons.

I don’t know if I’m the only one who thinks this, but the Rainbow Ride picture looks like Navi, the white clouds on the side being the wings. But as a kid, I didn’t play Ocarina of Time, and when I looked at this painting, I imagined some angel inside this orb of light, floating high in the sky, it’s wings folding out, about to reveal it self.
This video was a journey. I thought I knew what to expect from the first few pictures, but didn't really believe you'd attempt Hazy Maze Cave or Dire Dire Docks, and then you took it yet another level with the hieroglyphics and the Heave-Ho logo, which I hadn't even registered as existing! Thank you once again for your endless efforts, Pannen.
Oh this is VERY cool.
I like all of the original pictures. The blurry but high quality picture makes me feel.. nostalgic i think. I’m not really sure what the feeling is
It made me realize that SM64’s castle is also kind of a museum and induces the same vibe without ever stating it out right
7:27 - it looks like the goombas are having a bit of sibling rivalry when you flip flop them back and forth lol

I still can't understand how some people think original 64's Bowser looks better than the DS remake's one.
Even in the original game's portraits, he resembled the remake's one much more than the weird N64 model.
Drew459 _ does anyone actually think it's a better more faithful recreation? No. It just has a kind of lo-fi charm to it. Mario 64 has a very unifying cuteness quality to it imo
Cuteness but if you are asking about perfection then I am sure that DS is 100% better.
Drew459 _ oh yeah yeah
Ooohh, these low-poly models! They have such an amazing charm to it! I love the 3D models of this era, and their uses of textures to fill in the gaps. People today like to be minimalistic with their low-poly stuff and not put in any textures at all, but I say screw that; bring back the low-poly with low-res textures and bright colors!
N64 Bowser looks like he got stung by bees all over his face
You should give someone a ROM where all the paintings have been replaced by these and see how long it takes them to notice that something is up.

This is really beautiful. Thank you so much Pannen, the work you put in really shows. I hope that one day the original artwork gets released by nintendo, there seems to be a lot of detail like on TTM that gets lost in the conversion to N64 textures.

Where is the Heave-Ho logo found in the final game? I don't think I've ever seen it.
On the side of a heave-ho, probably.
...huh, I actually had no idea that that was the name of the enemy
I had no idea they had a logo on them
Keep in mind most of my experience with 64 is the DS version, so while I assume now that the logo is present there, it can go missed pretty easily on the DS's comparatively miniscule screen. I'd probably see it if I kept my eye really sharp.
Heave Ho's do not feature the logo in the DS version if I recall correctly
0:25 That's probably the sun, not a fuse.
