  • And there it was...discarded on the roadside and I couldn't pass it up. So I brought it home to discover and repair. Let's have a look at this Perkins 4.236 Diesel Engine and see what kind of condition it's in. Let's get started...

      When I saw it there on the roadside and confirmed that it was free for the taking I had to have it. I know the value of diesel engines and this one looked good. The injection pump alone is worth about $1k. The cylinder liners look good with little wear and no ridge. I'll be putting this back together and hopefully it'll run.
      This one was used in a marine environment. It has water jacketed manifolds commonly seen on fishing boats. I looked for head gaskets online and all I could find were agricultural head gaskets. They have several more holes open for coolant than the one that came out of this engine. The head gasket for this one , while identical in every other way, has several cooling passages blocked off by the factory gasket. I wonder why? I also wonder if I can use the agricultural head gasket in this engine? Any help appreciated. Thanks for watching!

    oh man - nice find. These are great engines - have one (diesel Perkins 4.236) in my 1967 Massey Ferguson tractor - they are strong/bulletproof engines!
    That one looks like it's out of a marine application (aqua paint, side water-pump). running, these things are worth some coin!
    Whenever you try to start it, be sure to bleed 100% of the air out of the fuel system, all the way to the top of the injectors; near impossible to start with any air in the system - otherwise they start/run great!

      I was very pleased to find this thing. I'm looking forward to getting it back together but first I'm going to have the head magnafluxed and maybe need to have valve seats ground or replaced--they were very pitted. I may just lap them instead and give the engine a try though. I like to do things up right and that can cost $$$ so I may just go on the less expensive route first to see if it'll run.

    Craig I don’t think there’s an engine you don’t like and could drive by without having a look 😂 This one definitely needs some love and attention but I’m sure you will provide both and get it going!

    $100 bill says its CCW - "left hand" - rotation and completely worthless for anything but a port side "twin engine" marine application and parts to "convert" it to CW rotation are "cost prohibitive" IF they're available at all. Which they probably aren't since Perkins "reversed" everything about the engine "geometry" including putting the main bearing shell "lock" tabs on the other side of the bearing shells and that required machining the blocks "backward" for them as well.
    The only parts that MIGHT be "convertible" are the crankshaft and cylinder head.
    Somebody that "invested" in that engine for some kind of "swap" or "conversion" or "build" probably figured that out and it subsequently "fell off the truck" and an insurance claim made them "whole" again.

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good information, I never would have considered the rotation being a factor. So far, I haven't proceeded beyond the head removal and a thorough oiling. When I get back to it, the first thing I'll do is hook up the starter and check the rotation. Maybe you're right about the insurance too...who knows? Thanks for your comments. They are very welcome.

    How's she goin'? Wow what a find eh. Even if the engine never works again there are enough spares parts on this carcass to make it worth all your work. But I'm thinking you can get it going. What a bunch of gravel in that intake manifold. The buddy must have dragged it a long way!!! Take care!!!

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just couldn't resist. There it was, abandonded on the roadside and I had to have a look. I didn't see the gravel in the intake until later but as you said, there is still value in the parts even if it never runs again...but I will try to get it going. I have the valves out and the next video is being prepared and will be along soon...the head looks good and the valves aren't damaged. I'm going to have the head checked for cracks and then put it back together.

      It will be...I may try to get a new aftermarket gasket for the head but most other things can be fixed. I can solder the return lines, get new filters and change the thermostat housing, get the starter casing welded or replaced...it should go. There doesn't seem to be any ridge at the top of the cylinders so the pistons and bore should be ok once cleaned out.

    • @heliarche
      @heliarche ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EverydayProjects I don't get why they'd have dragged it out like that. And dang did they pack as much sand and gravel in there as they possibly could? Wow! Even if it were completely clapped out, someone would have taken it for parts. There are a lot of those still out in the world aren't there? Besides the gravel and the damage, it looks nice and clean inside.I think you're right about it being on a boat. I think the boat went to rot and someone saved the engine. That head gasket even looked pretty fresh from the video.

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heliarche Yeah, it's an unusual thing to toss out, but some people have tons of money and may have looked at this as old junk compared to their brand new engine. I think I can bring it back without much difficulty. If the injection pump is working that will be the determining factor...I will part out the engine instead if the pump doesn't work as it should.

      @@EverydayProjects More money than brains I guess. That would have sold. That's how we get free stuff though. Any luck on that generator?

    • @EverydayProjects
      @EverydayProjects  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@heliarche I've been looking at the head gasket and trying to find a replacement. It seems that there are many A4.236 engine parts (A stands for Agricultural) but few for Marine engines, especially on ebay. The marine engine gasket has several cooling ports blanked where the Agricultural ones are all open. I don't want to mess things up with the wrong gasket. Sometimes those blocked ports DO have an effect on how the head cools. Maybe the marine engines are meant to run with a bit hotter head?
      The generator is running and producing power. I got it going on saturday after swapping out the carb for the $20 aftermarket one. Video soon.
