That Perkins is a fantastic engine. I believe its a 4.236. I have seen them in all kinds of equipment and the never let you down. Great job on the pump fix!
It was amazing to see this tractor go zooming down the road like that. All of your videos are well done and your English is perfect. I enjoy every video. Thank you
Gomoron från Oregon! För två år sedan kåpte jag en lite gård norr om Hudiksvall. I visited Sweden the first time in 1971, made it back the first time in 2011, and farm in 2021. I worked in Sweden in the lumber industry for about a year in 2019 and got to see a whole lot of Southern Sweden in my travels every month. I really enjoyed your video. I am a forester by training, but my real profession for over 50 years has been as a log builder and carpenter. All of this in volved equipment which means I often had to be my own mechanic. I must say that you have better luck bleeding a Perkins injection system than I do! of course, you have a fortunate advantage with the gravity fuel feed to the pump. I have a teleskopiklastare with a Perkins 4-236 NA motor. The poor old thing was in need of serious love when I bought it and last night was when I decided to pull the head off the motor, do a valve job, install a new gasket, rebuild the injectors and then see if the injection pump needs to be rebuilt. My sense is that the old 4-236 motors are about one of the most bulletproof motors ever built. About the only thing better are the B18's and B20's in my Amazons. Återigen, jag uppskatter din video och jag har också prenummerat. Mycket bra jobbat!
Nice tractor, I purchased a old MF165 a couple months ago, It was in pretty decent condition when purchased, Just now getting around to put it to work. Did some body paint, repaired the rusted out tool box & minor stuff but hadn’t any mechanical issues until last week when it died, starved for fuel, obvious choice was to replace the fuel filters, and when checked the air cleaner it was severely stopped up surprisingly the engine could get any air, Found the 1st fuel filter & glass bowl filled with rust… from the tank, 2nd filter was remarkably clean - guess the 1st had caught much of the trash, worked my way upstream with the fuel lines, struggling to get fuel up to the next point, the fuel lines still had rust and seemed to be bonded, even when unscrewed, couldn’t pull them loose without concern of damage, Anyway I finally got the fuel to the fuel pump and the tractor fired up, without me having to crack open the injection lines, I used the tractor a couple hours since, seemed like it was running perfectly, then cut out again, The sentiment glass bowl looks pretty clear now & I have fuel up to the 2nd filter, I will check the fuel pump tomorrow in the daylight, I’d suspect debris/rust in the lines making it way through & clogging up the system. I will mostly have to replace the tank to avoid further issues from the rust getting into the fuel system.
I noticed you drive an Opel. Back in my youth (many years ago) I owned a 1959 Opel station wagon. Tough reliable little car, not something one in high school would want, but it was mine and it did run well.
I have the same problem of diesel leak on my 165 and was little bit scared to strip it but now I see it's not that difficult to strip it and replace it thanks so much keep it up with your good work and I'm in south Africa
Great video! It gave me the courage to not only reseal the C.A.V fuel pump on my Volvo BM t430 but also help my neighbour when his MF 375 started to overflow the oil :)
Great video. Impressed with the way you explain what you are doing. Very helpful for anyone that is not mechanically inclined. Keep up the great work. Greetings from Canada.
I drove a similar unmodified and new 165 when I worked on a farm in 1967. It was a good powerful tractor in it’s day. Like yours it had no cab and no safety cage in those days. Nice work on the fuel pump which were often a trouble to bleed.
Enjoyed your video. I also have an MF 165. They are great tractors! Mine is pretty much original, and I use it here on my small farm in southeast Tennessee. Keep up the good work restoring "Yesterday's Equipment". God bless you!
Well done. Nice you did not have to do it in the woods. But I bet you would pull it out first. I have the MF35 with Perkins 152 3 cyl engine. I need to do a seal job on the CAV pump now and I am learning from videos like yours. Much appreciated sir.
You did great explaining this. I have a 880 David Brown Tractor and I'm having trouble staring it. I believe their is more bleeding that I need to do since I drained all of the fuel out.
Also check at the sediment boowl that there are no little air bubbbles being sucked in.... the seal on the line from the tank to the pump.. the one connection that bolts into the pump itself..can develop wear...and air bubbles are no use in a diesel injection system... unscrew the connection and replace the seal there with an O ring..... when you use the priming lever now there will be no bubbles.. solid fuel to push through to bleed everything else...
A very good video, well produced. Enjoyable to the end. Glad to hear it's still a workhorse in a BIG meaningful way. Now I have to fix my hi/lol range airlines on my big truck. No more procrastinating!
Just discovered your channel. Absolutely love the content. All my favourite machinery on the same channel, stationary engines, vintage tractors, old motorcycles and that wonderful Opel you drive. Am a fan now for sure. Thank you for a wonderful channel.
Had to rebuild the injector pump on my 150 Massey Ferguson this week in the USA it cost 1200 dollars but it was worn out never been touched in 50 years can't complain.
Enjoyed the video and several others that you've done. Really like seeing those old machines come to life again. Looking forward to new videos. Hello from Arkansas.
I do enjoy watching you work, especially on these great English made Diesel Engines. I'm looking forward to more on your story of how you 'up-graded' that transmission. Thanks for this.
I’m just about to do the same on a Bedford 500 engine that’s in my Bedford VAL coach. Interestingly…. My CAV pump has a ‘tell tale’ hole in the bottom of the triangular face plate. This is so that you don’t fill the sump up with diesel and knacker your engine without knowing it. Mine is absolutely pissing out diesel out of this small hole - i thought the pump had failed so badly that it would need replacing but no - its just this drain hole and the fact that the seal has probably turned to stone! - great walk though anyway its given me great confidence to tackle it myself
Awesome tractor! Must be pretty scary at 60mph! The sounds reminds me of my old land rover series 2A diesel, I bolted a turbo to it and adjusted the fuel rail, it pulled like a train with those mods!

I used to work at a Massey Fergusson dealership in the stores and supplied many parts for 165’s. They were great tractors but be careful if you ever put a muck filler bucket on the front. The filler tends to pick the front wheels up and if they come down quickly onto a hard surface the front stub axles can snap. It’s the only weakness I really know of… you have a very tidy example of the type👍
Just a quick FYI. My brother and I replaced an injector pump exactly like this one on an old Massey loader/backhoe. You CAN put the pump in wrong and it will tighten down. Here's how. The pin on the drive gear is supposed to go into the slot on the pump, but it is at exactly the right place to go into one of the bolt holes, and you can then tighten the pump up to the machine. The way to recognize it is that the bolt holes won't be aligned and the gear bolts won't go in.
Holy smokes I cant believe how fast that tractor is. Aesome job on the turbo charger, and modded gearbox. I have an old Massy MF35, it has the loader attachment, and a fork life on the back which mainly carries my 1500 pound counter weight. I put skidder chains on it for added traction. It currently sits in the middle of my driveway as it suddenly quit. I eliminated everything down to the metering valve on the injection pump. So tomorrow mornnig ill get out there and have a look before we go back into -25C
Your tractor goes faster than my 1982 Bedford CF ex-ambulance. : )… it’s running on a Perkins 4.154. I’ve just had the engine overhauled, but it’s got lots of white/blue smoke from exhaust on start up and 10minutes plus after - I think the timing may be out a bit… I’ve just fitted new injector nozzles. Anyway, great video… thanks for sharing your knowledge.
@@YesterdaysMachinery Hi Richard thanks for your reply, I really enjoyed watching your video all the way through. I don’t know if the valve seals have been replaced (if they should have been, I hope so. If they haven’t been replaced, I’m not surprised), a mechanic has been doing the overhaul, but I really wish I had done the whole thing myself… I’ll ask the mechanic today if the valve seals have been replaced and let you know. I really appreciate your reply, solving the smoke problem would be brilliant… thanks . . . . Mike.
Hi and very interesting video. I did smile when you demonstrated your low range and first gear as it reminded me of my old now sold Landrover Diesel Discovery 2 door I owned for 10 years, Its pulling power in both low range and first or lower reverse was amazing.. I enjoy your videos as I too am an old thing at 73 years old, ex AERO parts maker but retired at 55 to the seaside/ Love older things but embrace modern EV vehicles, but, you cant beat the throb of an old diesel.. Thanks again -- Ian. UK.
My MF 40B is essentially the same as this at its core. Called an "industrial" it is fitted with a big hydraulic pump in front of the engine to drive a backhoe and front end bucket. It has a silly cab that mechanically interferes with the pedals, and it is painted yellow. Comes with three point hitch and draft control which so far as I can tell has never been used in 53 years. The framing for the bucket severely blocks access to the engine so this kind of work means I have to go like a snake. The best part is the Perkins engine. Rock solid and starts every time.
Great job I really enjoyed your video and look forward to more videos on your tractor. I have a Massey T20 with a 4 cylinder standard motor company engine and I would like to fit a small turbo to it one day. They were very popular her in Scotland with small farms. I still work my one regularly thanks again for sharing your videos it is very interesting to see stuff like this from different parts of the world. Cheers. Bob.
Thank you for your knowledge. I am in Scotland and have a John deere 1640, which I broke the pump shaft by burning cooking oil (I know I'm stupid). Sourced a s/h pump from the next engine up and a bit scared to fit back in case the timing is out 😊. Any advice would be very welcome 😊 Ps I went away and left the tractor, along return ran for 10 minutes, then stopped, the fuel had turned into half liver like substance which I cleaned out ( haven't done the lines as yet)😊 I won't do that again if I can get my jd going?
Thank you! Yes the 165 i think is one of the best in MF. So simple and yet so nice to work with. And the turbo makes this tractor even better. /Richard
very good video, i a 1963 AC 3 cyl. have trouble you video showed me i can. cool how you have done things. Other you tube makers could learn from you. Thank you for sharing. Tyler Texas. Even us Americans can learn from you :)
G’day from far off Tasmania! I had one of the seals blew on the fuel pump on my Mitsubishi Fuso 4x4 truck 5 weeks ago, here in Tasmania. I had to send the pump to Sydney (about 2000km away) to swap ( I get someone’s refurbished unit, and mine gets refurbished for some other sucker). The replacement arrived back last week, we put it on, and you guessed it, they didn’t fix it!!! It runs great at idle, but as soon as you get it to 2000RPM, it blows black soot, and shakes the whole truck (6 tons). Now waiting on another replacement - which they say is being expedited. Great to see you get your job done well in a short period of time.
Hello! from Kansas. You do a good job of explaining what you are doing!
A proper sounding diesel under load. Will look forward to the gearbox video. Thank-you.

The sentiment glass bowl looks pretty clear now & I have fuel up to the 2nd filter,
I will check the fuel pump tomorrow in the daylight,
I’d suspect debris/rust in the lines making it way through & clogging up the system.
I will mostly have to replace the tank to avoid further issues from the rust getting into the fuel system.
this is the reason why a lot of old timers loved the 165 it was a verry simple tractor to work on in the field Can you do a video on the turbo please
Awesome tractor. That turbo is actually hilarious as is the speed. Love it!
Thanks Richard
As usual a really great video. Always something new to learn… thumbs up

Awesome massey tractor and great job ..really enjoyed video ..i have one too 155
I love these old Perkins engines :) all Perkins are wery good :)

Good video Richard.
I think this is exactly what’s wrong with my tractor it’s stuck out in the field too. I think I can do the same thing. Thanks for the video.
Another interesting video, I used a little grey petrol fergy on my small farm….it did everything
Great looking tractor!

Ps I went away and left the tractor, along return ran for 10 minutes, then stopped, the fuel had turned into half liver like substance which I cleaned out ( haven't done the lines as yet)😊
I won't do that again if I can get my jd going?
Great video. Great tractor!!
We had a similar one for a while, just without the turbo, great machine!
Ps, talk as much as you like, i think most of us watching will happily listen!
Thank you! Yes the 165 i think is one of the best in MF. So simple and yet so nice to work with. And the turbo makes this tractor even better. /Richard

Hi from New York, love that tractor along with your turbo upgrade!! (and gearing)
That’s so awesome and what great info thanks brother
