It's a "coffee Phin" and is widely available on ebay and such. I got hold of a cheap one, cut the handle off and it fits nicely in my 300ml ti mug. The trick is to get the right amount of coffee as it acts as a filter. It does make good coffee and the cleaning is not much of an issue for a day hike. I keep meaning to make a video about it but may just wait for warmer weather
I'm here for coffee gadgets 😅 I recently started brewing my morning coffee at home with my camp stove and tiny espresso mocha pot in my kitchen. I just open the window and brew my coffee as though I'm camping. Maybe I need a holiday 😂
Omg I'd never dreamed of a little packet of sweetened condensed milk...it's in my Amazon cart right now! As for making money on TH-cam, you mean you have an actual job? This isn't your entire life? 😂 Love your work, thanks for doing it.
Thanks for the review, Ernie! Looks like a nice product. We have three of the cheaper ones that they sell at any Asian market and use those. Looks like the same design except that the plate that goes above the cup comes off.
I like it in theory, but it seems like i could take my moka pot and pour that coffee on top of sweetened condensed milk (or pour it into the coffee instead of having it in the bottom to start) since my "6 cup" moka pot gives me one strong cup. I guess you could also do this with a pour over filter/setup unless I'm missing something unique about this specific product.
I had Vietnamese coffee at a Vietnamese restaurant owned by Vietnamese person. The coffee glass had condensed milk on the bottom. Above the cream was ice cubes fill to the top and then the coffee dispenser.
Hey Ernie (and all) speaking of sweetened condensed milk... semi-related... try some camp lemon pudding. Open a can of sweetened condensed milk and add some condensed lemon juice (like in the plastic squeeze bottle) and stir until it's thick like pudding. Was always a hit at Scout Camp and doesn't require refrigeration. Don't knock it til you try it. I appreciate all you do.
I love Vietnamese coffee, just not every day. I hate to waste a can of condensed milk if I'm just making it every once in awhile, so glad you showed the packets. I agree the clean up is a pain with these but they sure taste good. In Vietnam they use Robusta beans which are not common in the states. Thanks.
Awesome video! Thank you! I really enjoy Vietnamese coffee. Its been a long time since my last cup but now Im thinking I may need a cup. Thank you again!
LOVED this Ernie! This year I started searching Amazon for some sort of instant coffee for backpacking and came across some pouches of Korean Coffee so I am wondering if it is similar. Needless to say, I started an Amazon subscription for STAYVIA COFFEE because it is sugar free and it really needs nothing else for creamer or sweetener, it tastes incredible, and it weighs practically nothing in the backpack!! Only CON is that I need 2or 3 little sleeves to make an American size cup-o-joe! Thanks for all you do!! Jeff
I love a new and quirky way to do something ‘normal’! I think these videos are great and not you’ve got me to buy something else! I wonder if the wife will notice? 😅
Larger Can of mixed fruit if you want it thicker, pour off the juice. Then add a can of sweetened condensed milk. Make it cold and IT IS DELICIOUS! Thanks for everything you do. 👍
Several years ago I bought a bag of Vietnamese coffee and I really liked it, but my favorite coffees are Sumatran, Kenyan, and Costa Rican. But I don't buy them very often because I'm retired and on social security and I can't afford to buy those expensive coffees.
I like that it doesn't need a paper filter. I guess it would work well for a conventional cup as well. I stopped putting sugar in my coffee in my early twenties. Today if you put sugar in my coffee it will taste funny but not sweet.
25 dollars!!!! WTH? You can pick up just as good for under 10 in many bigger Asian stores. Top tip, Dulce de Leche works even better than condensed milk, well for me anyway! 😋
@@RickinICT No, but they do have an old school stamped loyalty card though. 1 stamp for every 20 you spend and 25 off with a full card (8 stamps)! I like my local Asian store 😀
It is sweetened condensed milk. You should also find a good Vietnamese coffee . The style of brewing is Vietnamese, but if you don't use a good Vietnamese blend, then you might as well just do your favorite style of brew method and add sweetened condensed milk. The best cup of coffee I have ever had was at a Vietnamese restaurant.
Thanks for this overview, but (from what I've experienced) Vietnamese coffee is a lot stronger. Yours looks a bit diluted. Quang Tran's caffeinated video "How To Pour The Perfect Vietnamese Coffee" uses traditional Vietnamese coffee (which includes Robusta beans, which are more bitter and have more caffeine) and condensed milk and is more intense. Nestle offers condensed milk in cans, but also in plastic containers and plastic bags, which is more convenient than using up a can of condensed milk for Vietnamese coffee.

I'm here for the coffee...and the gadget

Most innovative design I've seen. Thanks Ernie

Totally agree. I do this once in a while. Delicious. I don’t need another gadget to get very very similar results.
Try using an Aeropress for MUCH easier cleanup.
+1. AeroPress that most versatile coffee maker. Would work well with this recipe.

Fire Maple 👍👌. I Have ALL The Fire Maple... 😍
Always up for a coffee video Doc. Thanks, have a great weekend everyone!

Maybe take straws, fill desired amount, and seal t ends ?❤
I really like the coffee videos! Thanks for going to the trouble to make these videos.
Similar to a French Coffee Press. Can’t wait to try it. Thank you!

Oh that does look good
Looks good, thanks for sharing, YAH bless !
Yum!

Try the Trung Nguyen brand coffees for authentic taste. 👍
And Longevity Brand (Sữa Ông Thọ) condensed milk. Both are more affordable at Asian markets.

What's the point of the second screw down filter?thanks for sharing
I got heavy cream powder from Hossier Hill Farm, with no added sugar. Give it a try. it's really good.
Didn’t know this existed… Thanks so much for opening our eyes to a great new trail item!
Hmmm, I'm thinking I could use my Aeropress and get a similar result. Thanx.
Aeropress for the win!
I haven't seen you test any wood burning stoves anymore sir.
For clean up, would like two AeroPress filters make it easier to clean up? sandwich the grounds
I tried that and it didn't work that well. Had to use less coffee and as a result it was horrible

Yeah, but does your local Asian store have affiliate links? 😉

Is it evaporated milk or condensed milk. Being from New Orleans I love coffee.

If you like Vietnamese coffee, visit your local Vietnamese restaurant for Pho, Bun, or Bahn mi, then have an iced coffee or tea for a real treat.
Looks like your Amazon link is for a listing that is no longer available. Searching for coffee phin yielded a lightweight stainless version for $2.99.
It looked like you just used a sort of random amount of ground coffee. Is there a specific level that you are supposed to fill the phin to?
Get it quick, before the tariffs jack up the price
I had a total fail
I used very fine ground
And it just poured through the mechanism
Going back to Turkish coffee brewed in a Finjan
Can I have a nice pot of tea, please?
Can I make tea with it?
The coffee grounds act as a filter. No idea what would happen with loose tea.
How is it that you never measure anything out? Really good coffee requires the proper ratios of water to coffee for. good extraction.
Lmao, Amazon already has it listed out of stock! I promise you, if I ever come up with a product to offer, you'll be the first person I send it to!
Stay away from the sugar Sir

I wonder how that coffee would go with hot beignets.
Apple filling perhaps? 😋
Try Lebanese coffee.
Go figures another product OUT OF STOCK.
FANCY EXPENSIVE POUR OVER DUMPED OVER CONDENSED MILK...I CAN DO THAT WITH MY POUR OVERS
This is just a waste of money. You can do the same thing with any other form of coffee maker and spend that money on something else
No. The coffee made with a phin is unique.
