  • Today, I will install a new motherboard from Big Tree Tech, The E3 RRF V1.1. RRF stands for RapRep Firmware. This board can run both Marlin and RapRep firmware. It’s using an ARM Cortex-M4 168Mhz processor, which is much faster than the one used for many other 32-bit boards, a Cortex-M3 72Mhz processor.
    The price of this RRF motherboard is pretty reasonable. It’s $38 on Big Tree Tech's official website. It costs a few more dollars if you buy it from Amazon, but you get faster shipping if you’re a prime member. This board has 4 TMC2209 drivers and is built in Wifi Module. I also purchased an IDEX expansion board which has another 2 TMC2209 chips to control the dual extruders or any stepper motor: it cost $10.
    My original plan was to install it on the Ender-3 Pro, but I decided to install it on the Sovol SV01 instead. This is because the glass bed of the SV01 is 255x300, but the actual print volume is 240x280. Because the location of the X limit switch is right here, it’s actually limiting the travel of the X Axis. This area of the glass bed is unreachable. If we use the TMC2209 sensorless homing features, we can remove the limit switch and gain some extra print volume as the print head could reach from edge to edge of the glass bed.
    If you follow my video, you can also install it on an Ender 3, Ender 3 Pro or Ender 3 V2. It would actually be even easier since you don’t need to compile firmware and you can use them directly from Big Tree Tech.

    Just have to say you're so clear and concise with instructions its a huge help. There are very obviously other knowledgeable creators on youtube, however sifting through their stuff to find the information needed is so time consuming and unclear.
    In fact, I have an ender 3 and the rrf board and loading the BTT precompiled firmware, my ender would not z home with the BL touch. However compiling my own firmware off your instruction (leaving out the sovol stuff of course) I now have working ABL. Thank you.

    Your videos makes me want to make a number of upgrades to my printers. Good thing, the upgrades are quite affordable. For my original CR10, I think the next upgrade would need to be print bed, rather than the controller board. It is soo slow to heat up. Although silent steppers would be nice too.

    Great videos keep up the good work. I was following your guide and found that on my ender 3 pro with the cr touch installed the firmware that worked was the one that says z homing. all the cables are connected to the mb probe all 5 pins. i tried first with the one that only says bltouch and it would not home z. Z would only go up each time I tried to home it. Z homing file worked perfectly. Now I'm trying to compile the latest version of marlin without screwing this up.

    I wish there was an SV01+ with quiet steppers and the BL Touch. I'm actually very happy with the SV01 so far. Hard to beat the print quality. I hate fiddling with the tiny microSD card.

      My new SV01 had the hot end heater burn out after ten hours. I assume it's just a random initial part failure. On the plus side, the heater quality looked good, spare parts are inexpensive and readily available, and it's easy to maintain the printer because of the open architecture.

    • @AuroraTech
      @AuroraTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's strange, you mean the heat cartridge burn out? You can ask Sovol for a replacement.

    • @Liberty4Ever
      @Liberty4Ever 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AuroraTech - I contacted Soval via Amazon a week and a half ago, when the hot end heater burned out after ten hours use. I was told I'd hear from them in 3-5 days but never heard anything. I would contact them directly if I wanted a response, but I bought five replacement heaters for a couple of dollars each - 40W and 24V so electrically equivalent but not nearly the quality of the original. They were the best I could find on Amazon. The wire gauge was much lighter so there will be more electrical losses in the wires which will limit the hot end temperature slightly, and the wires were only 1m long so I used inline quick disconnect connectors so I won't need to replace the heater all the way to the motherboard to make repairs easier next time (no need to flip it over). The printer has been working great, printing 21 hours a day for the past week. The nozzle has no problem quickly reaching 230C.
      I'm loving this little printer with the large build area. Great print quality, and easy to maintain. The extruder is excellent. It's simple and easy to load and prints flexible filaments very reliably.
      I also switched to the Prusa slicer last week and it's my favorite slicer. I like it better than Simplify3D, Cura, IdeaMaker, etc.

    Thanks for doing a video on the SV01 again Aurora... And really interesting choice of board! I have an SKR 2.0 + 2209s on order from BTT, but it's not even shipped yet. I'm now second guessing my decision!
    Also looking forward to seeing your update about the dual Z driver and G34. I've been using this setup with the v2.2.1 board now for a couple of weeks and it's working great. It's really interesting to see how much correction is needed for the Z axis. If I've been fiddling with the printer, particularly if it was on its side because I had the bottom open for some reason, the Z axis will be off by up to 0.5mm when I set it up again. Usually though, if it's just been powered off overnight, it's still off by 0.2mm at the start of G34. I really think G34 improves the accuracy of this printer.
    By the way... what are the clips you're using to hold the glass to the bed? I like the clamping force of the binder clips, but as you showed, they're huge. I'm currently using some picture frame clips, but I don't like how they clamp. The ones Creality uses for the E3 V2 look good, but so does what you're using.

    Does setting the home offsets affect the BLTouch Z offset? I did this and everything worked great but I must have done something off as it pushed the print head down too low and scratched the glass bed surface. I re-did the Probe Z axis offset and got a new value and updated it and then it was fine.

    Hello, I have two questions as I’m considering buying the sovol sv01 printer. What kind of nozzles fit this printer? Also you said that this printer fits any creality drop in boards, could a creality 4.2.7 board be put in this printer (obviously firmware would have to be compiled using similar steps to your video)?

    • @AuroraTech
      @AuroraTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try to print a line on the left edge, if the position is correct, I think you are good, if the line print outside the bed, you may need to set a home offset on the LCD screen.

      That's mostly in your end gcode on your slicer. Like a "present print" line of some sort. Check your end gcode at the very bottom of the lines for some kind of Y motion.

    • @AuroraTech
      @AuroraTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would take 10-15 seconds to upload to the printer after you inserted the SD card with the firmware.bin file.
      You have the exact same board BigTreeTech E3 RRF, right?
      If your Y-axis didn't stop when it reaches the end, that means sensorless homing is not enabled or the SENSITIVITY value is not right for your printer, how about the X-Axis?
      You may need to check:
      1. define SENSORLESS_HOMING is enabled in Marlin
      2. For my printer, SENSITIVITY for both X and Y are 60, you may try to adjust this number higher to make it more sensitive, you may start with 100, 90, 80... keep decreasing the number to find the perfect number for your printer.
      3. Make sure you put 2 jumpers under the X and Y stepper drivers on the motherboard to enable the sensorless homing feature.
