When it comes to longboarding, having the right setup is essential to getting the most out of your ride. One important aspect of this setup is the trucks, which are responsible for steering and stability. Gullwing Sidewinder trucks are a popular choice for many riders, but it's important to know how to set them up properly to avoid damage and ensure the best performance.
One common mistake that riders make when setting up their Sidewinder trucks is over-tightening the Kingpin bolt. The Kingpin is the bolt that runs through the truck and holds the washers and bushings in place. Tightening the Kingpin too much will restrict movement and can potentially damage the bushings, which are crucial for smooth turning.
To get the most out of Sidewinder trucks, it's recommended to run them as loose as possible. Tighten the Kingpin just enough so that nothing is rattling around, but not so much that movement is restricted. On Sidewinder trucks, this is typically the point where the nut is flush with the bolt. A good rule of thumb is to tighten the trucks until you cannot move the washer with your fingers, then give a quarter turn to lock everything into place.
It's important to note that this tightening method may not work for all trucks. Make sure the lock nut is appropriately engaging with the tread to prevent it from coming loose. Over-tightening your trucks can cause the bushings to bulge and become damaged over time, so it's crucial to find the right balance.
Once you've tightened the trucks a little, take the longboard out for a spin and adjust if needed. For beginners, it's recommended to ride looser trucks at a slower speed until you get more confident on the board. If the trucks still feel too loose, try a set of harder bushings to compensate.
In conclusion, setting up your Gullwing Sidewinder trucks properly is crucial to getting the most out of your longboarding experience. By avoiding over-tightening and finding the right balance for your riding style, you can enjoy smoother turns and better stability on your board. Yep. A lot of people are heavier than they used to be and just crank the nuts tighter to stiffen the bushings when they really just need to get harder bushings. Some stock bushings are ultra soft and I get hard bushings for all my setups. For regular skateboards I prefer Bones Conical Bushings. On longboards I just use any hard barrel bushings set.

sounds like you bent them, or is axels are straight but not lining up with the board then its probably just your bushings seating or slight bend in kingpin

That doesn't apply for downhill setups, does it?

yeah I imagine more fine breaking required if you bombing hills;)

does this apply to electric boards as well?

Eskates are a bit different because some can go 35mph, 40mph, 50mph etc. At higher speeds, looser trucks will cause speed wobbles, but this can be overcome with more experience and good techniques, such as leaning forward on your front foot so you have most of your weight on the front truck. That being said, you just have to try it out for yourself since there are 3-4 different types of trucks for eskates and each behave differently of course. Set your trucks loose so that turning is easy but increase your speed slowly so that you can start to feel a wobble, then either tighten your trucks a bit or try to change your weight distribution to see if you can overcome the wobble. Keep in mind that the moment a speed wobble comes on, put more weight on your front foot, try to keep your acceleration the same. Abrupt braking can also lead to more wobbles. Pretty much you don't want to change your acceleration or your speed the moment you experience a wobble, keep everything the same, move your weight towards your front foot and try to carve it out. Don't jump off your board, you're not going to outrun it if you're going above 15mph.
